Book It All Happened in Renfro Valley

Download or read book It All Happened in Renfro Valley written by Pete Stamper and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For sixty years, Renfro Valley has highlighted some of the biggest and most influential names in country and folk music. The show began in the 1930s as a combination radio broadcast and stage performance, and today it has grown into an array of shows and headliner concerts featuring old-time country music, country gospel, modern country, bluegrass, and comedy acts. John Lair, the ambitious and deeply committed founder of Renfro Valley, was fascinated with the past. He created the Renfro Valley Barn Dance to give radio listeners the experience of an old-fashioned rural hoe-down. He resisted the encroachment of popular "cowboy songs" and kept the stage and the airwaves filled with authentic Kentucky mountain music. Lair's vision struck a chord with music fans: on some Saturday nights, more than ten thousand people arrived at Renfro Valley and performances went on all night to accommodate the audiences. Pete Stamper, a forty-seven year veteran of Renfro Valley, traces the show's history from its early radio days in Cincinnati and Chicago, through the glory years in the 1940s, the lean times in the 1960s when rock and roll seemed to take over the music scene, to its renewed popularity in the 1990s. Once known as "the valley where time stands still," Renfro Valley has updated its programming while maintaining the feel of the folk culture on which it was founded. Red Foley, the Coon Creek Girls, Slim Miller, Pee Wee King, Old Joe Clark, and a host of other musicians and performers helped shape the development of Renfro Valley. Stamper describes the role of the Valley in the commercial history of country music and highlights John Lair's invaluable contribution to country music as a talent scout, businessman, and collector of traditional music of the South.

Book Will You Miss Me When I m Gone

Download or read book Will You Miss Me When I m Gone written by Mark Zwonitzer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major biography of the Carter Family, the musical pioneers who almost single-handedly created the sounds and traditions that grew into modern folk, country, and bluegrass music. Meticulously researched and lovingly written, it is a look at a world and a culture that, rather than passing, has continued to exist in the music that is the legacy of the Carters—songs that have shaped and influenced generations of artists who have followed them. Brilliant in insight and execution, Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? is also an in-depth study of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter, and their bittersweet story of love and fulfillment, sadness and loss. The result is more than just a biography of a family; it is also a journey into another time, almost another world, and theirs is a story that resonates today and lives on in the timeless music they created.

Book Tour on the Underground Railroad along the Ohio River A

Download or read book Tour on the Underground Railroad along the Ohio River A written by Nancy Stearns Theiss and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running for 664 miles along Kentucky's border, the Ohio River provided a remarkable opportunity for the enslaved to escape to free soil in Indiana and Ohio. The river beckoned fugitive slave Henry Bibb onto a steamboat at Madison, Indiana, headed to Cincinnati, where he discovered the Underground Railroad. Upriver from Cincinnati, a lantern signal high on a hill from the Rankin House in Ripley, Ohio, stirred others to flee for freedom. These stories and more along the borderland of the Ohio River also served as the setting for Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, which became an inspiration of human resistance. Author Nancy Theiss, PhD, takes readers on a tour through American history to places of courage and sacrifice.

Download or read book The Birds of Kentucky written by Burt L. Monroe Jr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind to be published for the Bluegrass State, The Birds of Kentucky is designed to provide an accurate and scientifically rigorous description of all the species of birds found in Kentucky. This comprehensive guide features a wealth of information, including abundance records, migration dates, and additional reference material, and indicates whether a bird is a permanent resident, winter resident, summer resident, visitant, or transient. Additionally, author Burt L. Monroe reviews the history of ornithologists who have worked in Kentucky and outlines the physiography of the state as it relates to birding. More than just a verbal portrait of Kentucky avifauna, The Birds of Kentucky includes fifty-one color paintings by the renowned wildlife artist William Zimmerman, whose work has been favorably compared to that of John James Audubon. In contrast to Audubon's romanticism and often tortuous style, however, Zimmerman offers us "comfortable" birds that look as if they are about to take wing and leave the page. Beautifully illustrated and based on a lifetime of field observation and research, this book provides an excellent guide to the natural history of the birds of the Bluegrass.

Book The Far Woods

Download or read book The Far Woods written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah Burwash has been visiting rural communities and remote areas to attend artist residencies, travelling to different cities for art and craft sales, volunteering on farms and working at lodges in the rocky mountains. The Far Woods is a collection of watercolours and other works she produced during these residencies and travels. These drawings celebrate the wilderness, rural lifestyles and resourcefulness. Burwash turns to past generations who, by necessity, had to be self-sufficient and create systems of mutual dependence among community members. Burwash has been researching and immersing herself in environments where she can learn the stories, skills and gain the experience and perspective from earlier generations to create narratives that uproot her own personal mythologies. She seeks to uncover both humble and provocative histories, more specifically those of women who were brazen and persistent in forging for a new social order. She creates characters, environments and narratives that are lyrical yet quiet, like frozen moments from dreams or nightmares. Her work seeks the threads that connect the past and present, weaving imagery that urges people to wander through the drawings, discovering more upon each view and unfolding questions about our relationships to land, nature, spirituality and community.
