Book The Language of the Freedmen in Petronius Cena Trimalchionis

Download or read book The Language of the Freedmen in Petronius Cena Trimalchionis written by B. Boyce and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realistic representation of the speech of the lower classes in ancient literature is largely confined to the comic genres, and Petronius' realism in this area is more thorough-going than that of any other ancient author. A vast scholarly literature has grown up around the question of how faithfully the speeches of Petronius' freedmen reflect characteristics of actual popular speech; this literature is reviewed and evaluated. A survey of the phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic peculiarities in these speeches is then undertaken, in which they are compared with other 'vulgar' Latin sources such as the Pompeian inscriptions; Petronius is in fact one of our most important early sources for the study of popular Latin. The way in which Petronius used specific varieties of non-standard Latin to characterize different freedmen speakers is explored: Petronius has subtly modulated his freedmen's speeches to reflect differing emotional states and the different attitudes of the speakers toward their social position. The present study is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject undertaken in over forty years in any language and the only one in English.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petronius: Cena Trimalchionis However, the central part only has been trans lated, the longest of the fragments, and by far the most interesting portion of the book. It is interesting not alone for its admirable painting of the Roman life and manners of the Empire, but also from a philological aspect, containing as it does such a wealth of plebeian language and phraseology. A few unnecessarily coarse passages have been avoided, and in Chapter LVI., where so many puns occur, no effort is made to maintain, their double entendre in English, because of the im practicability of doing so consistently; indeed it is somewhat senseless to translate them at all, as they are meaningless, and must be read in the Latin to be understood. Download or read book Petronius Cena Trimalchionis written by William E. Waters and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petronius Cena Trimalchionis: Edited, With Introduction and Commentary The (jena Trimalchionis is fairly entitled to a place of prominence in the study of Roman life and literature. It reveals an important side Of life in the early years of our era, in all its naturalness and with perfect truthful ness, and is to that extent of the same value as the plays of Plautus or the Letters Of Cicero. The name of Petro nius has been anathema to a large number of Latin scholars, but in the Gena his puritas is no longer impu rissz'ma, and what he discloses there concerning the lan guage, life, and customs of a very influential portion of Italian society in the closing years of the Republic and at the dawn Of the Empire makes pleasant and valuable reading, especially as it supplements information gath ered from inscriptions, or from Comedy and the poets and prose writers of the period of Petronius, or from the discoveries which have been and are still being continu ally made in the excavations at Pompeii. Download or read book Character Portrayal in the Cena Trimalchionis of Petronius written by Carl Edward Brown and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gaius Petronius, a description of whom Tacitus has left in his Annals, is considered by most scholars to be the author of the Satyricon, the work containing the Cena Trimalchionis. Although most of his life was passed in idleness and luxury, Petronius possessed great ability. This he proved as proconsul of Bithynia and later as consul. An authority on pleasure, he became a close companion of Nero's. His influence with the emperor, however, aroused the jealousy of Tigellinus." --
