Book Petrology and Geochemistry of the Mafic Unit of the Baer Bassit Ophiolithic Complex Northwestern Syria

Download or read book Petrology and Geochemistry of the Mafic Unit of the Baer Bassit Ophiolithic Complex Northwestern Syria written by Mahmoud Hasan Harb and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mafic rocks of Bae'r-Bassit complex (NW Syria) occur as a part of a well-defined ophiolitic sequence in the region. The mafic rocks are present mainly as massive poorly layered isotropic gabbros, sheeted dykes, and minor pillow lavas. The gabbroic rocks vary in textures from fine-grained vesicular, to medium and coarse?grained massive rocks. Pillow lavas which are made up of basaltic composition are embedded within agglomerated volcano-sedimentary material. The gabbroic rocks include four petrographic varieties; gabbro-norite, olivine gabbro-norite, micorgabbro-norite, and amphibole gabbro. These rocks are made up generally of plagioclase (An60 - An70). clinopyroxene, ort ho pyroxene, olivine, amphibole, and opaque iron oxides. Pyroxene is variably altered to bastite and some olivine crystals are weakly altered to iddingsite. The basaltic rocks consist of pyroxene phenocrysts occurring within a glassy groundmass. and a plagioclase-pyroxene-phyric basalt.

Book Tectonic Evolution of the Oman Mountains

Download or read book Tectonic Evolution of the Oman Mountains written by H.R. Rollinson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oman Mountains contain one of the world’s best- exposed and best-understood fold–thrust belts and the largest, best-exposed and most intensively studied ophiolite complex on Earth. This volume presents new international research from authors currently active in the field focusing on the geology of the Oman Mountains, the foreland region, the carbonate platforms of Northern and Central Oman and the underlying basement complex. In addition there is a particular focus on geoconservation in the region. The volume is divided into three main sections that discuss the tectonics of the Arabian plate using insights from geophysics, petrology, structural geology, geochronology and palaeontology; the petrology and geochemistry of the Oman Ophiolite and the sedimentary and hydrocarbon systems of Oman, drawing on the geophysics, structure and sedimentology of these systems. The volume is enhanced by numerous colour images provided courtesy of Petroleum Development Oman.

Book The Interpretation of Igneous Rocks

Download or read book The Interpretation of Igneous Rocks written by Keith Gordon Cox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our aim in writing this book is to try to show how igneous rocks can be persuaded to reveal some ofthe secrets of their origins. The data of igneous rocks consist of field relations, texture, mineralogy, and geochemistry. Additionally, experimental petrology tells us how igneous systems might be expected to behave. Working on this material we attempt to show how hypotheses concerning the origins and evolution of magmas are proposed and tested, and thus illuminate the interesting and fundamental problems of petrogenesis. The book assumes a modest knowledge of basic petro graphy, mineralogy, classification, and regional igneous geology. It has a role complementary to various established texts, several of which are descriptively good and give wide coverage and evaluation of petrogenetic ideas in various degrees of detail. Existing texts do not on the whole, however, deal with methodology, though this is one of the more important aspects of the subject. At first sight it may appear that the current work is a guidebook for the prospective research worker and thus has little relevance for the non-specialist student of geology. We hope this will prove to be far from the case. The methodological approach has an inherent interest because it can provide the reader with problems he can solve for himself, and as an almost incidental consequence he will acquire a satisfying understanding.

Download or read book Quaternary of the Levant written by Yehouda Enzel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quaternary of the Levant presents up-to-date research achievements from a region that displays unique interactions between the climate, the environment and human evolution. Focusing on southeast Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel, it brings together over eighty contributions from leading researchers to review 2.5 million years of environmental change and human cultural evolution. Information from prehistoric sites and palaeoanthropological studies contributing to our understanding of 'out of Africa' migrations, Neanderthals, cultures of modern humans, and the origins of agriculture are assessed within the context of glacial-interglacial cycles, marine isotope cycles, plate tectonics, geochronology, geomorphology, palaeoecology and genetics. Complemented by overview summaries that draw together the findings of each chapter, the resulting coverage is wide-ranging and cohesive. The cross-disciplinary nature of the volume makes it an invaluable resource for academics and advanced students of Quaternary science and human prehistory, as well as being an important reference for archaeologists working in the region.
