Book The Modeling of Petroleum Coke Gasification Using ASPEN PLUS Software

Download or read book The Modeling of Petroleum Coke Gasification Using ASPEN PLUS Software written by Saif Yoseif Salih and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gasification of petroleum coke (Petcoke) has emerged in the last decades as one of the attractive options and is gaining more attention to convert petcoke and oil residue to synthesis gas (Syngas). Syngas consists mainly of hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), some other gases, and impurities. In this study, a simulation of Tuscaloosa petcoke, typical gulf coast refineries petcoke, gasification was developed using ASPEN PLUS software. Sensitivity analysis of the simulated model was performed to study the variation in operation conditions of the gasifier such as temperature, pressure, oxygen flow rate, and steam flow rate. The approach correlates the behavior of these parameters with the syngas yield (i.e., H2, CO, CO2, H2O, CH 4, and H2S). Consequently, the desired syngas yield can be obtained by manipulating the gasifier parameters. Implementing optimization calculation shows that up to (81 %) of the gasifier cold gas efficiency (Based on LHV) can be achieved for the developed model. Therefore, Tuscaloosa petcoke gasification under the aforementioned parameters is feasible and can be commercialized. This leads to more utilization of the bottom of oil barrel by upgrading it to more valuable gases with less environmental impacts.

Book Modeling the Performance Emissions and Costs of Texaco Gasifier Based Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Systems

Download or read book Modeling the Performance Emissions and Costs of Texaco Gasifier Based Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1908 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems are an advanced power generation concept with the flexibility to use coal, heavy oils, petroleum coke, biomass, and waste fuels to produce electric power as a primary product. IGCC systems typically produce sulfur as a byproduct. IGCC systems are characterized by high thermal efficiencies and lower environmental emissions than conventional pulverized coal-fired plants. This study deals with the development and application of new systems models for estimating the performance, emissions, and cost of entrained-flow gasification-based power generation systems, including characterization of uncertainty in the estimates. The study focuses on modeling and assessment of three Texaco gasifier-based systems using ASPEN, a steady-state chemical process simulator. The first model is a coal-fueled IGCC system with a radiant and convective high temperature gas cooling design. The second and third models use a total quench high temperature gas cooling design with one of them using coal as fuel and the other using heavy residual oil as fuel. ASPEN-based performance models were developed for all three cases by substantially modifying a performance model previously developed by the U.S Department of Energy's Federal Energy Technology Center. New models for auxiliary power loads, emissions, and capital, annual, and levelized costs were developed for all three systems. The system models incorporate details regarding key process areas, such as mass and energy balances for the gas turbine and gasifier. The gas turbine process area performance model was calibrated to published data for operation on natural gas and also to data for operation on syngas. Example case studies were done on each of the IGCC system models and the results obtained were compared with each other. The models developed captured the critical interactions between the various process areas of the IGCC systems. The radiant and convective-based system has higher plant.

Book Municipal Solid Waste to Energy Conversion Processes

Download or read book Municipal Solid Waste to Energy Conversion Processes written by Gary C. Young and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE TO ENERGY CONVERSION PROCESSES A TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC REVIEW OF EMERGING WASTE DISPOSAL TECHNOLOGIES Intended for a wide audience ranging from engineers and academics to decision-makers in both the public and private sectors, Municipal Solid Waste to Energy Conversion Processes: Economic, Technical, and Renewable Comparisons reviews the current state of the solid waste disposal industry. It details how the proven plasma gasification technology can be used to manage Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and to generate energy and revenues for local communities in an environmentally safe manner with essentially no wastes. Beginning with an introduction to pyrolysis/gasification and combustion technologies, the book provides many case studies on various waste-to-energy (WTE) technologies and creates an economic and technical baseline from which all current and emerging WTE technologies could be compared and evaluated. Topics include: Pyrolysis/gasification technology, the most suitable and economically viable approach for the management of wastes Combustion technology Other renewable energy resources including wind and hydroelectric energy Plasma economics Cash flows as a revenue source for waste solids-to-energy management Plant operations, with an independent case study of Eco-Valley plant in Utashinai, Japan Extensive case studies of garbage to liquid fuels, wastes to electricity, and wastes to power ethanol plants illustrate how currently generated MSW and past wastes in landfills can be processed with proven plasma gasification technology to eliminate air and water pollution from landfills.
