Download or read book Blood and Oil written by Michael T. Klare and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Resource Wars, a landmark assessment of the critical role of petroleum in America's actions abroad In his pathbreaking Resource Wars, world security expert Michael T. Klare alerted us to the role of resources in conflicts in the post-Cold War world. Now, in Blood and Oil, he concentrates on a single precious commodity, petroleum, while issuing a warning to the United States-its most powerful, and most dependent, global consumer. Since September 11th and the commencement of the "war on terror," the world's attention has been focused on the relationship between U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and the oceans of crude oil that lie beneath the region's soil. Klare traces oil's impact on international affairs since World War II, revealing its influence on the Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, and Carter doctrines. He shows how America's own wells are drying up as our demand increases; by 2010, the United States will need to import 60 percent of its oil. And since most of this supply will have to come from chronically unstable, often violently anti-American zones-the Persian Gulf, the Caspian Sea, Latin America, and Africa-our dependency is bound to lead to recurrent military involvement. With clarity and urgency, Blood and Oil delineates the United States' predicament and cautions that it is time to change our energy policies, before we spend the next decades paying for oil with blood.

Download or read book Creating Worlds Otherwise written by Paula Serafini and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, Best Book in Latin American Visual Culture Studies, Latin American Studies Association–Visual Culture Studies Section, 2023 Extractivism has increasingly become the ground on which activists and scholars in Latin America frame the dynamics of ecological devastation, accumulation of wealth, and erosion of rights. These maladies are the direct consequences of long-standing extraction-oriented economies, and more recently from the expansion of the extractive frontier and the implementation of new technologies in the extraction of fossil fuels, mining, and agriculture. But the fields of sociology, political ecology, anthropology, and geography have largely ignored the role of art and cultural practices in studies of extractivism and post-extractivism. The field of art theory, on the other hand, has offered a number of texts that put forward insightful analyses of artwork addressing extraction, environmental devastation, and the climate crisis. However, an art theory perspective that does not engage firsthand and in depth with collective action remains limited and fails to provide an account of the role, processes, and politics of art in anti- and post-extractivist movements. Creating Worlds Otherwise examines the narratives that subaltern groups generate around extractivism, and how they develop, communicate, and mobilize these narratives through art and cultural practices. It reports on a six-year project on creative resistance to extractivism in Argentina and builds on long-term engagement working on environmental justice projects and campaigns in Argentina and the UK. It is an innovative contribution to the fields of Latin American studies, political ecology, cultural studies, and art theory, and addresses pressing questions regarding what post-extractivist worlds might look like as well as how such visions are put into practice.

Book excerpt: The poems contained in this book are simply a reflection of some of our nexus socio-political and socio-economic factors that informed our societies by ways of our life experiences and developments in our respective walks of life over the past and present times indeed. Hence, this book is a mix of issues that were and are pertinent to the admitted and rejected questions and answers for the form and the process of our alleged democratic societies by the specific reasons that informed the subject matter or substance of the written English Language of the poems it sought to pass on to the end user of it. Since, I wrote the poems contained in this book by my academic studies and experiences in Sierra Leone and London between 1980 and 2013. Download or read book Indigenous Life Projects and Extractivism written by Cecilie Vindal Ødegaard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring indigenous life projects in encounters with extractivism, the present open access volume discusses how current turbulences actualise questions of indigeneity, difference and ontological dynamics in the Andes and Amazonia. While studies of extractivism in South America often focus on wider national and international politics, this contribution instead provides ethnographic explorations of indigenous politics, perspectives and worlds, revealing loss and suffering as well as creative strategies to mediate the extralocal. Seeking to avoid conceptual imperialism or the imposition of exogenous categories, the chapters are grounded in the respective authors’ long-standing field research. The authors examine the reactions (from resistance to accommodation), consequences (from anticipation to rubble) and materials (from fossil fuel to water) diversely related to extractivism in rural and urban settings. How can Amerindian strategies to preserve localised communities in extractivist contexts contribute to ways of thinking otherwise?
Download or read book The War Within written by Don Tate and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ...a memoir that is at once dramatic, disturbing, sexually charged, and often very funny, but ultimately a moving portrait of a man who has found the inner strength to overcome.... - Paul Ham, international journalist and author This is a complex, virtuoso analysis of an Australian life written by an unabashed and unrepentant authoran acidic dissection of the role that genes and environment have in developing a persons character, as well as a sauntering chronicle of social analysis. In turn, we follow the life of the author as he comes to terms with being a disaffected youth, a patriotic but naive infantryman in the Vietnam War, and an alienated, disabled veteran struggling with male status anxietyapparently inexhaustible in its capacity to cause suffering. Along the way, Tate examines the dark crevices of the male psyche as he battles inner demons and the unconditional love of his beautiful Christian wife, Carole. Above all, this memoir is a celebration of the human condition and of a man with a can-do, cavalier attitude to life and his desire to rise above mediocrity. An outstanding contribution to Australias rich heritage of memoir.

Download or read book Popular Anatomy written by Keath Fraser and published by The Porcupine's Quill. This book was released on 1995 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning three hundred years of imaginary time, and four years of real time, Popular Anatomy is set in the present and imagined from the future. A perversely historical novel this comic chronicle springs from Vancouver in the inflationary years of the early 1980s. Its galaxy of characters -- born and unborn, white and black, impoverished and professional -- all seek a richer, closer world against expanding odds. Debt and ruin loom in a crippling recession that succeeds the Year of the Rooster. Touching down in cities from Asia to Africa, Central to South America, Keath Fraser's triptych is a masterful anatomy of our own ersatz culture, holding out some hope of a grand unity through the history of one Canadian city and its increasingly interwoven protagonists. Dwight Irving is a travel agent who loathes travel, but who finds this no impediment to fabricating a travel empire of advice and packaged trips through his highly leveraged company, Herodotus Tours. His foster charge, Aloysius, is a brilliant punk-rock orphan from Bombay, with an earring and purple hair, whose clambering entrepreneurial spirit brings him to trial for trafficking in refugees. A doctor of chiropractic, Bartlett Day, friend and housemate to the Irvings, is a wide and ironic traveller, visitor of bone caches from Calcutta to Kampala, Phnom Penh to Lima. He is a man disillusioned with his quack profession, yet in deep sympathy with his dislocated patients at home. Meditating on time and place, home and abroad, in quest of unifying metaphors in an illusory world, Popular Anatomy is science fiction in the deepest sense. Plot inflates here like Creation itself, contracting finally to reconcile fiction and history in a novel of thematic dexterity and virtuoso storytelling.
