This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petrography and Geology of the Igneous Rocks of the Highwood Mountains, Montana In the following work will be found the results of field and labora tory studies of the igneous rocks of the Highwood Mountains of Mon tana. The field work was carried out by Mr. Walter H. Weed and the writer, chiefly during the latter part of the summer of 1894, though the eastern part of the area was again revisited for a few days in 1896. The north-central part of the area, around the Shonkin and Arnoux stocks, was not visited by the writer, as this part of the work was done by Mr. Weed after the writer was called from the field. As the field work in petrology was incidental to the areal mapping of the region on the base map of 4 miles to the inch for the Fort Benton folio of the United States Geological Survey, under charge of Mr. Weed, the time that could be devoted to a careful study of details was necessarily limited. Future studies of the district may therefore bring out minor features which were not seen or which are but briefly treated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the Marysville Mining District, Montana: A Study of Igneous Intrusion and Contact Metamorphism The geology of the Marysville district involves a study of the phenomena of igneous intrusion and of contact metamorphism, and, as these are branches of the science which still hold much that is debatable, it is necessary in order to arrive at the conclusions that the facts shall be presented in great detail and the discussion as to their significance be made complete. Only by so doing can the conclusions be considered safe. In addition to the problems directly connected with the igneous intrusions and indirectly with the ore deposits, it is found that the structure of the sedimentary formations is far from simple, the strata being folded, warped, crushed, or faulted, and entirely without fossils. These structural complexities make it further necessary to give a full treatment to the subject. Yet many readers will not wish to follow the details, but will desire to get in a few pages the chief facts of the geology. For such this chapter is written, being condensed from the following chapters of the report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Natural History of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint written by Alfred Harker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Igneous Rocks The following page are, in substance, a course of lectures delivered at Cambridge; and, in offering them to a larger audience, the general plan of treatment has been retained. Igneous action and igneous rocks are first considered from a purely geological standpoint. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. The middle portion of the book deals with the crystallization of igneous rock-magmas, regarded as complex solutions. Although the subject is one which might be more skilfully handled by a professed chemist, a presentation of it as it appears to a petrologist may be not less useful to the student. I have in the main followed Professor Vogt, whose writings in the last few years have thrown so much light upon the matter. Some of the questions briefly and tentatively touched in the concluding chapters are of a more speculative character, but so fundamental in their scope that they could not be passed over in silence.
