Download or read book Petrification Processes in Matter and Society written by Sophie Hüglin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-13 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petrification is a process, but it also can be understood as a concept. This volume takes the first steps to manifest, materialize or “petrify” the concept of “petrification” and turn it into a tool for analyzing material and social processes. The wide array of approaches to petrification as a process assembled here is more of a collection of possibilities than an attempt to establish a firm, law-generating theory. Divided into three parts, this volume’s twenty-plus authors explore petrification both as a theoretical concept and as a contextualized material and social process across geological, prehistoric and historic periods. Topics connecting the various papers are properties of materials, preferences and choices of actors, the temporality of matter, being and becoming, the relationality between actors, matter, things and space (landscape, urban space, built space), and perceptions of the following generations dealing with the petrified matter, practices, and social relations. Contributors to this volume study specifically whether particular processes of petrification are confined to the material world or can be seen as mirroring, following, triggering, or contradicting changes in social life and general world views. Each of the authors explores – for a period or a specific feature – practices and changes that led to increased conformity and regularity. Some authors additionally focus on the methods and scrutinize them and their applications for their potential to create objects of investigation: things, people, periods, in order to raise awareness for these or to shape or “invent” categories. This volume is of interest to archaeologists, geologists, architectural historians, conservationists, and historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Question: Are you part of the solution or part of the problem? These writings are offered for those average "man on the street" type of low-information conservative who have been awakened and want to volunteer their efforts by enlisting in the cause to help recover American freedoms from this leftist tyranny. Put your big-boy pants on. Let's rock and roll. This is a handbook on how to avoid being an unwitting ally of ignorant pseudointellectual elitist snobs, leftists, regressive liberals, progressives, socialists, fascists, communists, Marxists, Maoists, including all cross-dressing RINO (republican in name only) gelding losers, Trojans, and counterfeit conservatives. A starter kit and pocket guide for conservative wannabes. Conservatives are not antigovernment. They are pro-Constitution and anti-Marxist. Our country has drifted so far left that now the Tea Party represents what for decades was normal. A very important heads-up: Most low-information voters have no clue they are low-information voters. Can we talk and separate the adults from the kids? Our argument is Americanism versus Marxism, not Republican versus Democrat! All our rights are sovereign, natural, God-given, and unalienable, not constitutional! Our government is a constitutional republic, not a mobocracy! It is the government, stupid! Aren't we finished yet? Don't we have too much already?

Download or read book Imperial Unknowns written by Cornel Zwierlein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major study, the history of the French and British trading empires in the early modern Mediterranean is used as a setting to test a new approach to the history of ignorance: how can we understand the very act of ignoring - in political, economic, religious, cultural and scientific communication - as a fundamental trigger that sets knowledge in motion? Zwierlein explores whether the Scientific Revolution between 1650 and 1750 can be understood as just one of what were in fact many simultaneous epistemic movements and considers the role of the European empires in this phenomenon. Deconstructing central categories like the mercantilist 'national', the exchange of 'confessions' between Western and Eastern Christians and the bridging of cultural gaps between European and Ottoman subjects, Zwierlein argues that understanding what was not known by historical agents can be just as important as the history of knowledge itself.

Download or read book The Aristotelian Mirabilia and Early Peripatetic Natural Science written by Arnaud Zucker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume devoted to the sections of the Aristotelian Mirabilia on natural science, filling a significant gap in the history of the Aristotelian study of nature and especially of animals. The chapters in this volume explore the Mirabilia, or De mirabilibus auscultationibus (On Marvelous Things Heard), and its engagement with the natural sciences. The first two chapters deliver an introduction to this work: one a discussion of the history of the text; the other a discussion of Aristotelian epistemology and methodology, and the role of the Mirabilia in that context. This is followed by eight chapters that, together, are effectively a commentary on those sections of the Mirabilia with close connections to Aristotle’s Historia animalium and to a number of Theophrastus’ scientific treatises. Finally, the volume ends with two chapters on thematic topics connected to natural science running throughout the work, namely color and disease. The Aristotelian Mirabilia and Early Peripatetic Natural Science should prove invaluable to scholars and students interested in the ancient Greek study of nature, ancient philosophy, and Aristotelian science in particular.
Download or read book The Unsolved Mystery of Noah s Ark written by Mary Irwin and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ararat, a behemoth of a mountain, is 17,000 feet of pain for anyone who dares trespass upon its icy heights. It is a place of dread where one wrong step can send climbers careening down a steep, glacial field into the abyss known as the Ahora Gorge. Many have died on those slopes, and some have never been seen again. So why do climbers come to this place on the far east of the Turkish Frontier? It is not for sport alone; in fact, for most, that is far from the real reason. They come to Ararat flirting with death to find an old boat we all know as Noah's ark. It is said that its rotting corpse is somewhere up there in the swirling clouds and slumbering silence of ancient ice. Come with Mary Irwin, one of the original "ark-aeologists," as she travels to Ararat and back again uncovering many of the ancient secrets of Noah's ark. You may be surprised what you find!

Download or read book Bad Luck Hot Rocks written by Ryan Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the curse made famous by the hit show Dead to Me The Petrified Forest National Park in Northeast Arizona protects one of the largest deposits of petrified wood in the world. Despite stern warnings, visitors remove several tons of petrified wood from the park each year, often returning these rocks by mail (sometimes years later), accompanied by a "conscience letter." These letters often include stories of misfortune attributed directly to their theft: car troubles, cats with cancer, deaths of family members, etc. Some writers hope that by returning these stolen rocks, good fortune will return to their lives, while others simply apologize or ask forgiveness. "They are beautiful," reads one letter, "but I can't enjoy them. They weigh like a ton of bricks on my conscience. Sorry...." Bad Luck, Hot Rocksdocuments this ongoing phenomenon, combining a series of original photographs of these otherworldly "bad luck rocks" with facsimiles of intimate, oddly entertaining letters from the park's archives.
