Book Joyful Babel

Download or read book Joyful Babel written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joyful Babel: Translating Hélène Cixous is a selection of critical essays on translation and the writing of Hélène Cixous, with contributions from translators of her texts into different languages and cultures. The present volume is unique in that it is the first collection of essays on the work of Cixous from the perspective of translation. It presents new explorations into translating as process, theory and practice, and new insights on Cixous’s fictional and theoretical world. It is an international collection, open to readings of Cixous’s writing, including the theoretical, fictional and dramatic discourses. The variety of intersecting subjects and perspectives provokes, interrogates and explores Cixous’s theory and writing in ways that will contribute to a deeper understanding of her oeuvre, will motivate new debates as well as inspire new research. This book is addressed to a wide range of readers, from those who initiate themselves to translation or already practise it, to readers and critics of Cixous’s work, linguists and translation theorists, scholars interested in gender and postcolonial issues, and critics of contemporary literature; thus, not only academics but also professional translators, as well as drama/theatre staging practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hélène Cixous is among the most influential and original literary critics and feminist thinkers of our time. This volume reproduces - for the first time, in any language - a collection of pages from her original writing notebooks, offering a unique insight into her radical thought and work. The material gathered here ranges across the full spectrum of Cixous' writing, including the concept of écriture féminine, and the starting points and sources of inspiration for her poetry and prose. The editor's introduction succinctly outlines the central tenets of Cixous' theory of writing. Each extract is accompanied by editorial commentary and a translation, both by Susan Sellers. The book concludes with an interview with Cixous herself, in which she discusses the writing process, her own criticism, fiction and poetry and the value and importance of these notebooks. Students and teachers of literature, psychoanalysis, philosophy and feminist theory will find this an illuminating and inspiring collection of writings. Edited by Susan Sellers, Professor of English and Related Literature at the Univeristy of St Andrews.

Book excerpt: Wilf Perreault is in a class of artists known primarily for a single subject – in his case, the humble urban back alley. Coteau Books proudly joins forces with the MacKenzie Art Gallery to present a coffee-table book with more than a hundred full-colour images, accompanied by essays discussing the work of the artist best known as “Wilf”. Wilf Perreault contains an additional treat – 11 pieces of creative prose and poetry by Saskatchewan literary artists responding to Wilf's work in general, or to specific paintings that have inspired them. Walking up the alley with Wilf Perreault, we see how his work fits perfectly into the tradition established by Saskatchewan artists from Ernest Lindner to Joe Fafard to David Thauberger. His paintings are rendered in a breathtaking detail that asks us to take another, closer, look at the everyday. Born in the small Franco-Saskatchewan community of Albertville, Wilf Perreault studied art at the University of Saskatchewan and has been painting and teaching art in Regina since the early 1970s.

Book Veiled Encounters

Download or read book Veiled Encounters written by Michael Harrigan and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel narratives were the principal source of knowledge about the lands of the Near East and the Indian Ocean Basin in 17th-century France. Claiming the authority of first-hand observation, they paradoxically rely for their legitimization on the tropes of an established literary tradition. The status of these texts remained ambiguous, not least because of their anecdotal depictions of great riches, brutality or sexual promise. Drawing on the insights of post-colonial scholarship, this study tackles a question given scant attention in previous work and suggests that beyond the hazy representation of the Orient, an opposition emerges between the threatening Near East and the indolent East Indies. Distinguishing recognizable representations from those generated by new encounters, this book questions the feasibility of cultural representation through travel, exploring a large corpus of original sources written by French ecclesiastics, gentlemen-travellers, ambassadors and adventurers. Linguistic, religious, cultural or geographical barriers meant most travellers remained distanced from the peoples about whom they would simultaneously become authoritative. The encounter was further transformed in narratives that were intended to entertain and to satisfy the criterion of curiosité. The 'Oriental' that emerges is a supremely variable entity, alternately naked or veiled, barbaric or civilized, menacing or attractive.

Book Emile Zola and the Artistry of Adaptation

Download or read book Emile Zola and the Artistry of Adaptation written by Kate Griffiths and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Filmmakers have drawn inspiration from the pages of Emile Zola from the earliest days of cinema. The ever-growing number of adaptations they have produced spans eras, genres, languages, and styles. In spite of the diversity of these approaches, numerous critics regard them as inferior copies of a superior textual original. But key novels by Zola resist this critical approach to adaptation. Both at the level of characterization and in terms of their own textual inheritance, they question the very possibility of origin, be it personal or textual. In the light of this questioning, the cinematic versions created from Zolas texts merit critical re-evaluation. Far from being facile copies of the nineteenth-century novelists works, these films assess their own status as adaptations, playing with both notions of artistic creation and their own artistic act. Kate Griffiths is a lecturer in French at Swansea University."
