Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of the history of Peterborough Cathedral - one of England's finest surviving Norman buildings - and its preserved art and architecture. Peterborough Cathedral is one of England's finest Norman buildings and, with the addition of its uniquely arranged west front, also among the most individual. Architectural historian Dr Jonathan Foyle combines the wealth of his specialist knowledge with the recent findings of other historians in this study and elucidation of a truly impressive building. He shows how its liminal position between land and water reflects the mediating role of the medieval Church between the terrestrial and the celestial realms. It is fundamental to the Saxon abbey's dedication to St Peter, bearer of the key to heaven, and is reflected in the construction, decoration and symbolic language of the twelfth-century building. Engagingly written and beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned photography and the author's own architectural drawings, Peterborough Cathedral: A Glimpse of Heaven offers a superb tribute to one of England's most beautiful and enigmatic medieval buildings. Contents: Introduction; 1. Between Land and Water; 2. Destruction and Rebuilding; 3. Cathedral Completed; 4. Nave Ceiling; 5. The End of an Era; 6. Survival and Renewal. Book The Peterborough Version of the Anglo Saxon Chronicle

Download or read book The Peterborough Version of the Anglo Saxon Chronicle written by Malasree Home and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2015 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the linguistic and cultural construction of one of the texts of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. In the twelfth century, a version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was rewritten at Peterborough Abbey, welding local history into an established framework of national events. This text has usually been regarded as an exception, a vernacular Chronicle written in a period dominated by Latin histories. This study, however, breaks new ground by considering the Peterborough Chronicle as much more than just an example of the accidental longevity of the Chronicle tradition. Close analysis reveals unique interpretations of events, and a very strong sense of communal identity, suggesting that the construction of this text was not a marginal activity, but one essential to the articulation of the abbey's image. This text also participates in a vibrant post-Conquest textual culture, in particular at Canterbury, including the writing of the bilingual F version of the Chronicle; its symbiotic relationship witha wider corpus of Latin historiography thus indicates the presence of shared sources. The incorporation of alternative generic types in the text also suggests the presence of formal hybridity, a further testament to a fluid and adaptable textual culture. Dr Malasree Home teaches at Newcastle University.

Book A Medieval Book of Magical Stones The Peterborough Lapidary

Download or read book A Medieval Book of Magical Stones The Peterborough Lapidary written by Francis Young and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Medieval Book of Magical Stones is the first translation of the longest and most comprehensive medieval English treatise on the occult powers of stones and gems, the Peterborough Lapidary. Lapidaries (encyclopaedias of the 'virtues' of stones and minerals) were an essential resource for practitioners of natural and ritual magic as well as medicine. This late fifteenth-century manuscript from the library of Peterborough Cathedral describes 145 stones, portraying them as living beings whose properties range from giving the bearer the power to command spirits and foretell the future to healing numerous illnesses and communicating with spirits and the dead, along with instructions on how to release latent occult power from within stones. Many of the proposed uses of stones resemble the concerns of medieval necromancers, such as invisibility, love magic, power over animals and the creation of magical mirrors. pp. xliii+106; 2 column text; introduction; bibliography; analytical index; 8 b/w illustrations

Book Peterborough Abbey

Download or read book Peterborough Abbey written by Karsten Friis-Jensen and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together every catalogue and book-list to survive from the library of Peterborough Abbey, one of the great monastic houses of medieval England. The lists range in date from the tenth-century bequest of Bishop pthelwold of Winchester (the first such record to survive from England) to the select list of titles recorded by John Leland prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. A catalogue of the early twelfth century records 61 titles, and may conceivably be a record of what had survived the flames of a disastrous fire in 1116. A long list of abbatial bequests to the library covers the years 1177-1391 and includes the important donation of Abbot Benedict (1177-1193). The chief catalogue to survive is the so-called Matricularium, a peculiar and complicated document of the late fourteenth century, attesting some 347 compendious volumes. Certainly, this number of books can only represent a portion of the collection at the time, but the catalogue remains enormously valuable since it records the many subsidiary titles in each volume instead of merely the first, and allows a small number of surviving manuscripts to be identified as having been at Peterborough. Also included in this volume are texts which relate to the practice of reading in the abbey: the cycle of refectory reading during the liturgical year, and the annual distribution in Lent of books for private reading.

In this book, Dr King uses a wide range of source material to examine the character of the land market on the estates of Peterborough Abbey in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. He suggests that some common pattern emerges in the behaviour of those concerned, and offers an original interpretation of certain familiar types of medieval record.

Book The Architecture of Norman England

Download or read book The Architecture of Norman England written by Eric Fernie and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important addition to the literature is the first overall study of the architecture of Norman England since Sir Alfred Clapham's English Romanesque Architecture after the Conquest (1934). Eric Fernie, a recognized authority on the subject, begins with an overview of the architecture ofthe period, paying special attention to the importance of the architectural evidence for an understanding of the Norman Conquest. The second part, the core of the book, is an examination of the buildings defined by their function, as castles, halls, and chamber blocks, cathedrals, abbeys, andcollegiate churches, monastic buildings, parish churches, and palace chapels. The third part is a reference guide to the elements which make up the buildings, such as apses, passages, vaults, galleries, and decorative features, and the fourth offers an account of the processes by which they wereplanned and constructed. This book contains powerful new ideas that will affect the way in which we look at and analyze these buildings.

Book The Wise Master Builder Platonic Geometry in Plans of Medieval Abbeys and Cathederals

Download or read book The Wise Master Builder Platonic Geometry in Plans of Medieval Abbeys and Cathederals written by Nigel Hiscock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Did the plan of medieval churches have any underlying symbolic meaning? This work re-opens the debate about the importance of geometry and symbolism in medieval architectural design and argues the case for attributing an intellectual meaning to the planning of abbeys and cathedrals. In challenging prevailing claims for the use of arithmetical rations in architectural design, notably those based on the square root of two, Dr Hiscock advances a perspective consisting of proportions derived from the figures of Platonic geometry - the square, the equilateral triangle and the pentagon - and provides evidence for the symbolic interpretation of these figures. The investigation further reveals whole series of geometric relationships between some of England's most celebrated Norman cathedrals, such as Norwich or Durham, together with a wide sample from the Continent, from Old St Peter's in Rome to Chartres Cathedral, and sets out a comprehensive design method in each case. Hiscock first demonstrates the proposition that the ideas of Christian Platonism, including number and geometry, remained current and were employed in the thought of the early Middle Ages. In particular, he argues that they can be associated with the leading persons in the 10th-century revival of monasticism and that they found expression in the "white mantle of churches" that spread across Western Europe at the end of the first millennium AD. The book then provides a detailed analysis of the geometric proportions of church plans between the 9th and 12th centuries in Germany, France and in England. This research seeks to demonstrate that a coherent sequence of geometric forms can be seen in thse plans, forms which correspond to the key figures of Platonic geometry as understood in the context of Christian Platonist thought. In conclusion, the author shows how the system of design proposed could be set out on site using the known working methods of medieval masons.

Book An Architectural History of Peterborough Cathedral

Download or read book An Architectural History of Peterborough Cathedral written by Lisa A. Reilly and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Architectural History of Peterborough clarifies the obscure and tangled building history of one of England's most interesting medieval monuments. Lisa Reilly demonstrates how Peterborough offers extensive information concerning both specific buildings such as Canterbury and broader issuesof the period such as the process of cultural assimiliation, patterns of construction and building design as a response to liturgical needs. This study represents an expansion of the traditional use of formal and archaeological analysis to include a discussion of the building's social and politicalcontext. The entire fabric is discussed, from its Anglo-Saxon remains, the Anglo-Norman construction of the nave, choir and transepts, the early Gothic period which produced its well-known west front through to the final construction of its fan-vaulted retrochoir at the very end of the Middle Ages.Peterborough Cathedral is the best-preserved example of Anglo-Norman architecture, and provides an ideal case study for the period.
