It was the subject of more commentaries than any other work of Christian literature besides the Bible itself. The Book of Sentences is essentially a compilation of older sources, from the Scriptures and Augustine down to several of the Lombard's contemporaries, such as Hugh of Saint Victor and Peter Abelard. Its importance lies in the Lombard's organization of the theological material, his method of presentation, and the way in which he shaped doctrine in several major areas. Despite his importance, however, there is no accessible introduction to Peter Lombard's life and thought available in any modern language. This volume fills this considerable gap. Philipp W. Rosemann begins by demonstrating how the Book of Sentences grew out of a long tradition of Christian reflection-a tradition, ultimately rooted in Scripture, which by the twelfth century had become ready to transform itself into a theological system. Severin Kitanov argues that central to the concept of beatific enjoyment (fruitio beatifica) is the distinction between the terms enjoyment and use (frui et uti) found in Saint Augustine’s treatise On Christian Learning. Peter Lombard, a twelfth-century Italian theologian, chose the enjoyment of God to serve as an opening topic of his Sentences and thereby set in motion an enduring scholastic discourse. Kitanov examines the nature of volition and the relationship between volition and cognition. He also explores theological debates on the definition of enjoyment: whether there are different kinds and degrees of enjoyment, whether natural reason unassisted by divine revelation can demonstrate that beatific enjoyment is possible, whether beatific enjoyment is the same as pleasure, whether it has an intrinsic cognitive character, and whether the enjoyment of God in heaven is a free or un-free act. Even though the concept of beatific enjoyment is essentially religious and theological, medieval scholastic authors discussed this concept by means of Aristotle’s logical and scientific apparatus and through the lens of metaphysics, physics, psychology, and virtue ethics. Bringing together Christian theological and Aristotelian scientific and philosophical approaches to enjoyment, Kitanov exposes the intricacy of the discourse and makes it intelligible for both students and scholars.

Book excerpt: Analysing the contested reception of Peter Lombard's masterful Book of Sentences after 1160, the author argues that this period was a time of hitherto unrecognised intellectual conflict and negotiation that was based in arguments about the constitution of Christ's hypostasis. Peter Lombard was accused of having derogated Christ's humanity to the point of saying that "in as much as he is a man he is not something." This accusation, in turn, led to broader discussions about the validity of scholastic reasoning when applied to divine mystery. This conflict was finally resolved in the Constitutions of Lateran IV, when Peter Lombard's Book of Sentences was endorsed as orthodox. Tellingly, this endorsement came alongside the emphatic assertion of papal primacy that occurred at that same council. In Christological Nihilism in the Twelfth Century the author examines the logical relationship between the endorsement of the Lombard and the statement of primacy that takes place at Lateran IV, casting new light on the relationship between the development of scholastic methodology and the refinement of papal authority that occurs over this period.
