Book excerpt: ‘The finest harbour deserves the finest book … A colourful, fascinating and enduring account of the greatest waterway in the hemisphere.’Simon Winchester ‘This book is a joy to read. And essential for anyone who loves Sydney Harbour ... And who doesn’t?’Ken Done In the bestselling tradition of Peter Ackroyd's The Thames, a celebration of one of the world’s great waterways. Everyone knows Sydney Harbour. At least, we think we do. Everyone can see the harbour, whether we have ever been to Sydney or not. By as little as a word or two, the harbour floats into our mind’s eye. The Bridge. The Opera House. Fireworks on New Year’s Eve. When we see those images, we feel a sense of belonging. No matter who we are or where we’re from, we see the harbour and we feel good. In this beautiful, authoritative and meditative journey, Scott Bevan takes us from cove to cove, by kayak, yacht and barge to gather the harbour’s stories, past and present, from boat builders, ship captains and fishermen to artists, divers, historians and environmentalists, from signs of ancient life to the submarine invasion by the Japanese and the natural beauty that inspires people every day. This is the ultimate story of Sydney Harbour – a city’s heart and a country's soul.

Book excerpt: THE SCENE OUTSIDE OF the president's office at Wakefield University was becoming chaotic. About a hundred curious onlookers had gathered in the surrounding area, attracted by the sudden appearance of police cars, emergency vehicles and news vans. The growing crowd presented a genuine problem for police because it didn't take much to block Boston's historic but painfully narrow streets. Adding to the confusion, several reporters were attempting to feed simultaneous live shots to their respective television stations. A shocking event had just been discovered. There had been a murder at Wakefield University. Inside the president's office, the police and medical examiner grimly surveyed the loss of life and evidence of murder before them. One week ago, as the campus had joyfully looked forward to graduation, few would have predicted that such a thing would happen here. Some might have seen it coming if they hadn't been so invested in containing, rather than stopping, the resident campus villain, Vice President for Financial Affairs, Jack Doyle.

Book Commonwealth and the English Reformation

Download or read book Commonwealth and the English Reformation written by Ben Lowe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst much recent research has dealt with the popular response to the religious change ushered in during the mid-Tudor period, this book focuses not just on the response to broad liturgical and doctrinal change, but also looks at how theological and reform messages could be utilized among local leaders and civic elites. It is this cohort that has often been neglected in previous efforts to ascertain the often elusive position of the common woman or man. Using the Vale of Gloucester as a case study, the book refocuses attention onto the concept of "commonwealth" and links it to a gradual, but long-standing dissatisfaction with local religious houses. It shows how monasteries, endowed initially out of the charitable impulses of elites, increasingly came to depend on lay stewards to remain viable. During the economic downturn of the mid-Tudor period, when urban and landed elites refocused their attention on restoring the commonwealth which they believed had broken down, they increasingly viewed the charity offered by religious houses as insufficient to meet the local needs. In such a climate the Protestant social gospel seemed to provide a valid alternative to which many people gravitated. Holding to scrutiny the revisionist revolution of the past twenty years, the book reopens debate and challenges conventional thinking about the ways the traditional church lost influence in the late middle ages, positing the idea that the problems with the religious houses were not just the creation of the reformers but had rather a long history. In so doing it offers a more complete picture of reform that goes beyond head-counting by looking at the political relationships and how they were affected by religious ideas to bring about change.
