Knieskern's letters to Torrey combine personal news with a running tally of plant specimens being collected and sent, first to Torrey, and later to a great many of their mutual friends and acquaintances in the scientific community. Throughout, Knieskern chronicles his own difficulties in making ends meet as a small town physician, as well as the plight of his patients in factory towns in western New York. Knieskern later moves to New Jersey, becoming involved in the early days of the town of Manchester, and intimately associated with Torrey's brother William, founder of Manchester township. Obsolete and unresolved plant names mentioned include Ceratoschoenus, Dentaria, Diarrhena pumila, Helonias latifolia, Lecontia, Leiophyllum, Oakesia, Oakesia conradii, Phaca neglecta, Pyrola uliginosa, Rhus venenata, Sabbatia corymbosa, and Senecio balsamitae.

The trip would furnish specimens for Torrey's ongoing work on North American flora, as well as introduce Benner to his future wife, Torrey's niece, who along with Margaret Torrey accompanied the men on the trip. The letter is accompanied by two letters outlining its provenance as a gift from Raymond H. Torrey, who acquired it from Benner's son.

In his first letter, Brace encourages Torrey to visit him in Litchfield, Connecticut the following month, for though there might not be much of interest in the way of botany in May, he believes Torrey will be entertained by the minerals of the area; he adds that Mrs. Brace hopes to "find you a very good wife here." Brace writes of a book he is writing on New England and New York plants. The second letter consists largely of an extensive list of North American and European plants of which Brace hopes to obtain specimens. By the date of the third letter, 1841, Brace has apparently let his botanical studies lapse, but announces "I wish again to take up botany." To that end he inqures as to how he might obtain copies of some current botanical works.
