Download or read book Wildlife Resources written by Harald H. Roth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general interest and attention paid to the use of the renewable natural resources of the world have increased greatly during the last decades. This is due to the environmental dilemma into which mankind has got itself by the total disregard of ecological facts and laws, the underprizing of natural resources and the overemphasis on economic develop ment, coupled with unimpeded rapid population growth and the preponderance of material istic consumption-oriented attitudes. The management and use of natural resources such as forests, grasslands, rivers and lakes were formerly considered purely in a financial context, whereas latterly, a consciousness of their social function and the indirect economic benefits which can be derived from them has developed. Thus, as regards these traditional resources, multi-use concepts comprising eco nomically oriented utilisation as well as recreational, educational and social use have be come widely accepted. Conservation of natural resources for sustainable consumptive as well as non-consumptive uses has been recognised as a key element for maintaining eco nomic development all over the world. Fortunately, the industrialised countries have started to apply this principle themselves and in their technical and financial aid to the developing Third World countries. This is manifest from policy documents such as the World Bank Policy on Development of Wild Lands, issued in 1987.

Book Captive Breeding and Marketing of Turtles

Download or read book Captive Breeding and Marketing of Turtles written by Grahame Webb and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for Hawksbill turtle shell is high, and preliminary research by WMI indicated high growth rates of animals under captive conditions, and early attainment of maturity. However, the conditions required to stimulate reproduction in captivity for Hawksbill turtles are unknown. With successful nesting, small numbers of females would be required to produce sufficient numbers of hatchlings for farming purposes. An industry based on Hawksbill turtles could provide tangible economic benefits for indigenous landowners, and provide incentives for conservation of sea turtles and their habitats.

Download or read book Creative Conservation written by P.J. Olney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past progress and future challenges R.J. Wheater Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Edinburgh, UK. In the past two decades much has been achieved in the sphere of breeding endangered species, and we should be pleased that our co operative efforts have already borne so much fruit. However, on balance and despite the best efforts of conservationists, the position of wildlife in the wild places where they are best conserved has become worse, often dramatically worse. Before returning to the United Kingdom in 1972, I was in Uganda for 16 years, most of which time was spent as Chief Warden of Murchison Falls National Park. Our main problem was that an over-population of large mammals was having a devastating impact on the habitat. Devas tation was being wrought on woodland areas by the arrival of large numbers of elephants into the sanctuary of the Park, following changes in land use in the areas outside the Park. These changes were in response to the requirements of an ever-expanding human population.

Download or read book The Sonoran Desert Tortoise written by Thomas R. Van Devender and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most recognizable animals of the Southwest, the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) makes its home in both the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts, as well as in tropical areas to the south in Mexico. Called by Tohono O'odham people "komik'c-ed," or "shell with living thing inside," it is one of the few desert creatures kept as a domestic pet—as well as one of the most studied reptiles in the world. Most of our knowledge of desert tortoises comes from studies of Mohave Desert populations in California and Nevada. However, the ecology, physiology, and behavior of these northern populations are quite different from those of their southern, Sonoran Desert, and tropical cousins, which have been studied much less. Differences in climate and habitat have shaped the evolution of three races of desert tortoises as they have adapted to changes in heat, rainfall, and sources of food and shelter as the deserts developed in the last ten million years. This book presents the first comprehensive summary of the natural history, biology, and conservation of the Sonoran and Sinaloan desert tortoises, reviewing the current state of knowledge of these creatures with appropriate comparisons to Mohave tortoises. It condenses a vast amount of information on population ecology, activity, and behavior based on decades of studying tortoise populations in Arizona and Sonora, Mexico, and also includes important material on the care and protection of tortoises. Thirty-two contributors address such topics as tortoise fossil records, DNA analysis, and the mystery of secretive hatchlings and juveniles. Tortoise health is discussed in chapters on the care of captives, and original data are presented on the diets of wild and captive tortoises, the nutrient content of plant foods, and blood parameters of healthy tortoises. Coverage of conservation issues includes husbandry methods for captive tortoises, an overview of protective measures, and an evaluation of threats to tortoises from introduced grass and wildfires. A final chapter on cultural knowledge presents stories and songs from indigenous peoples and explores their understanding of tortoises. As the only comprehensive book on the desert tortoise, this volume gathers a vast amount of information for scientists, veterinarians, and resource managers while also remaining useful to general readers who keep desert tortoises as backyard pets. It will stand as an enduring reference on this endearing creature for years to come.

Book Sulcata Tortoise

Download or read book Sulcata Tortoise written by David Patrick and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sulcata tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), commonly known as the African spurred tortoise, is one of the largest tortoise species found in Africa. It is well-known for its large size, unique appearance, and long longevity. Adult Sulcata tortoises can measure 70 to 100 pounds (32 to 45 kg) or more, with some measuring 24 to 36 inches (61 to 91 cm). Physical Characteristics: - Shell: The Sulcata tortoise's shell, or carapace, is high-domed, with pronounced growth rings and yellowish-brown to tan colors. The scutes (scales on the shell) are strongly ridged, contributing to their distinct look. - Body: They have strong, muscular limbs that allow them to burrow and move quickly across their desert environment. - Head: Their head is small in comparison to their body, with large, expressive eyes and a beak-like mouth designed for their herbivorous diet. Lifespan: Sulcata tortoises are long-lived reptiles, often reaching 50 years or older in captivity, with some living into their 70s or 80s with good care. This lifespan requires a long-term commitment from pet owners. Behavior: Sulcata tortoises are mostly solitary animals, however they can be housed in groups if enough space is supplied. They engage in actions like sunbathing, excavating, and seeking for food. Their attitude is usually placid, making them ideal pets among reptile aficionados. Natural habitat and range Sulcata tortoises are native to the Sahara Desert's arid, grassy regions as well as sections of Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Senegal, Mali, Niger, and Sudan. Habitat characteristics: - Climate: They thrive in hot, arid areas where temperatures often exceed 100°F (38°C) during the day and drop greatly at night. They are designed to tolerate temperature variations. - Terrain: The natural habitat includes savannas, scrublands, and semi-arid regions with limited vegetation. These tortoises are adept diggers, digging burrows up to several feet deep to protect themselves from the heat and predators. Foraging and Diet: In the wild, Sulcata tortoises are largely herbivorous, eating grasses, leaves, and some fruits. Their diet is strong in fiber and low in protein, which is beneficial to their digestive health. The capacity to forage over broad areas enables them to achieve their nutritional requirements in a tough environment. Conservation Status: Sulcata tortoises are not currently endangered, although they are threatened by habitat degradation, poaching, and the illegal pet trade. Conservation initiatives are underway to safeguard their natural habitats and ensure sustainable populations in the wild. Anyone considering keeping Sulcata tortoises as pets must first understand their basic biology and natural history. Their amazing size, distinct mannerisms, and specific care requirements make them an intriguing choice for serious reptile keepers. However, potential owners must commit to their long-term care and well-being, reflecting the obligations that come with caring for such a rare species.
