Download or read book Pesticides written by Hamir S. Rathore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticides play an important role in controlling pests that carry diseases and threaten crop production. In recent years, however, there has been increased concern about the adverse impacts of pesticides and their degradation products on public health and the environment. A considerable amount of work is being done to develop nonchemical methods of pest control, but it is not yet feasible to dispense with the use of chemical pesticides. Pesticides: Evaluation of Environmental Pollution brings together, in a single volume, current knowledge on environmental pollution caused by pesticides. It helps readers evaluate the effects that pesticide residues have in all compartments of the environment. Featuring contributions by eminent scientists from around the world, the book gives an overview of the fate and transport of pesticides and their degradation in the environment. Detailing the sources, concentration, and hazards of residues, it examines their effects in humans, birds and mammals, fish, soil invertebrates, soil microflora, aquatic invertebrates, water, milk products, and more. The book also addresses endocrine-disrupting pesticides and explores biopesticides as alternatives to chemical pesticides. A review of data on the potential hazards of pesticides, this reference will be of interest to readers working in the areas of chemical crop protection and pollution management. It adds a balanced perspective to the debate between those who think that pesticides should be banned and those who consider the continued use of large quantities to be necessary for the survival of humanity. Book Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children

Download or read book Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the pesticides applied to food crops in this country are present in foods and may pose risks to human health. Current regulations are intended to protect the health of the general population by controlling pesticide use. This book explores whether the present regulatory approaches adequately protect infants and children, who may differ from adults in susceptibility and in dietary exposures to pesticide residues. The committee focuses on four major areas: Susceptibility: Are children more susceptible or less susceptible than adults to the effects of dietary exposure to pesticides? Exposure: What foods do infants and children eat, and which pesticides and how much of them are present in those foods? Is the current information on consumption and residues adequate to estimate exposure? Toxicity: Are toxicity tests in laboratory animals adequate to predict toxicity in human infants and children? Do the extent and type of toxicity of some chemicals vary by species and by age? Assessing risk: How is dietary exposure to pesticide residues associated with response? How can laboratory data on lifetime exposures of animals be used to derive meaningful estimates of risk to children? Does risk accumulate more rapidly during the early years of life? This book will be of interest to policymakers, administrators of research in the public and private sectors, toxicologists, pediatricians and other health professionals, and the pesticide industry.

Book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture

Download or read book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.

Book Evaluation of a No Touch Pesticide Use System

Download or read book Evaluation of a No Touch Pesticide Use System written by FR. Hall and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are increasing problems (real and perceived) associated with the handling of pesticides in agriculture. All known data reveal that the greatest levels of exposure encountered with the use of a pesticide occurs at the mixer-loader stage. LPCAT and Merck initiated a collaborative, designed laboratory and field study to evaluate the potential of a series of dissolvable bags for use in boom and airblast sprayers. In laboratory studies, the effect of temperature on bag dissolution was a non-linear inverse relationship. Water hardness had no effect on bag dissolution. The field tests included mechanical and by-pass agitation sprayers with numerous concentration spray volumes. The protocols included: variation in tank levels prior to the addition of bags, check points at suction strainers, and in-line filter and nozzle strainer observations at 10 min, 1 h, and 4 h, including 1 h down time. The QSA 2004 bag reduced foaming of the wettable powder formulation. The QSA 2000, 2004, and Monosol 8000 were successful in low volume tank mixes in hydraulic and mechanized agitation sprayers.

Book Guidelines on Organization of Schemes for Testing and Certification of Agricultural Pesticide Sprayers in Use

Download or read book Guidelines on Organization of Schemes for Testing and Certification of Agricultural Pesticide Sprayers in Use written by and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guidelines in this document are addressing government officials in plant protection, environmental and other concerned authorities. They cover the testing and certification of the sprayers currently applying pesticides on commercial farms. The series addresses an urgent need in many countries to ensure that where pesticides are used in crop production, they are applied through equipment, which is safe and fully functional. The issue applies to aircraft, large, field crop and orchard sprayers as well as to operator-carried equipment.
