Book Proust s in Search of Lost Time

Download or read book Proust s in Search of Lost Time written by Katherine Elkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unlike most fiction writers, Proust was trained in philosophy. In fact, he even considered writing a philosophical treatise instead of the novel we know so well. This hesitation about what form his writing should take still haunts his final choice of a novel, which is both philosophical, and yet, not philosophy. Take your pick of philosophers, from Plato to Nietzsche, and you can easily find an essay or even a book arguing that this particular philosopher most applies to Proust. But as one plunges into the narrative that he finally wrote, one is struck by the fact that In Search of Lost Time feels nothing like what we often call a philosophical novel, or even, a novel of ideas. Instead, philosophical reflection lies in the shadows of his fictional world, a sort of parallel life that can be found in the underweave"--

Book Radicalized Loyalties

Download or read book Radicalized Loyalties written by Fabien Truong and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread concern today about the “radicalization” of young muslim men, and the deprived areas of Western cities are believed to have become breeding grounds of home-grown extremism. But how do young Muslims growing up in the cities of the West really live? This book takes us beyond the rhetoric and into the housing estates on the outskirts of Paris to meet Adama, Radouane, Hassan, Tarik, Marley, and a shadowy figure whose name suddenly and brutally became known to the world at the time of the Charlie Hebdo shootings: Amédy Coulibaly. Seeing Amédy through the eyes of close friends and other young Muslim men in the neighbourhoods where they grew up, Fabien Truong uncovers a network of competing loyalties and maps the road these youths take to resolve the conflicts they face: becoming Muslim. For these young men, Islam stands, often alone, as a resource, a gateway – as if it were the last route to “escape” without betrayal and to “fight” in a meaningful and noble way. Becoming Muslim does not necessarily lead to the radicalized “other”. It is more like a long-distance race, a powerful reconversion of the self that allows for introspection and change. But it can also lead to a belligerent presentation of the self that transforms a dead-end into a call to arms.

Book Octave Mirbeau s Literary and Intellectual Evolution as a French Writer 1880 1914

Download or read book Octave Mirbeau s Literary and Intellectual Evolution as a French Writer 1880 1914 written by Enda McCaffrey and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work shows how the literary and political ideas of Mirbeau generated a vision of reality foreshadowing Modernity. Through Mirbeau's descriptions of the effects of technological, scientific developments of the day and the temporal and spatial implications of such developments on the literary process, coupled with his advocacy of a radical political ideology to expose the inadequacies of social democracy, it covers the relationship between literature and politics, showing how innovation in the creative process provides a reflective framework for the expression of political difference.
