Book excerpt: Painstakingly constructed by hand of plant fiber and precious feathers from endemic birds of Hawai‘i, feather cloaks and capes provided spiritual protection to Hawaiian chiefs for centuries while proclaiming their royal status. Few of the artworks known as nā hulu ali‘i, or royal feathers, survive today except in museums and private collections. Through photographs and scholarly essays, Royal Hawaiian Featherwork highlights approximately seventy-five rare examples of the finest featherwork capes and cloaks (‘ahu‘ula) extant, as well as royal staffs of feathers (kāhili), feather lei (lei hulu manu), helmets (mahiole), feathered god images (akua hulu manu), and related eighteenth- and nineteenth-century paintings and works on paper. With their brilliant coloring and abstract compositions of crescents, triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, and lines, the artworks are both beautiful and rich in cultural significance. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, featherworks were key items of indigenous Hawaiian diplomacy, used to secure political alliances and agreements, worn as battlefield regalia, and seized as spoils from defeated chiefs. Later, in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the featherworks—used in trading and gifts to foreign visitors—became symbols of Hawaiian heritage and cultural pride. This stunningly illustrated volume also serves as the catalogue to accompany the first exhibition of Hawaiian featherwork to be staged on the U.S. continent, scheduled for a six-month run starting in late August 2015 at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. It may be said in a general way, that the ancient Peruvians employed the feathers of the macaw and of many other varieties of the parrot family, and occasionally (in plumes of the larger head-dresses) those of the king vulture. The Karaja Indians of Brazil use the plumage of the macaw in the greater part of their feather-work, although that of other birds, not identified, will be found. In the work of the Chamacoccos and Guato of Paraguay, feathers of the American ostrich (Rhea) and of different varieties of the parrot family are most commonly used. In describing step by step the process of making the various feather attachments, I have followed the order which seemed most natural; but the same result could, of course, have often been reached by proceeding in a different order. In comparing the different forms of attachments shown in the illustrations, one striking difference will be seen between the methods of the ancient Peruvians and the work of such modem Indians as has been figured. The former employ a true knot in every instance, except in such cases as have the two parts wound together with thread. In the modern work, a loop or turn about the shaft takes the place of the knot. Figs. 1, a, and 8 illustrate the difference between these two methods. If a cord attached to a shaft, as in Fig. 1, a, be slipped downward until free from the feather, and then the ends drawn, a knot will result; but if we draw the ends of the cord in the form shown in Fig. 8, the loop disappears and there is no knot. A few words may be said regarding artificially colored feathers in the work of the South American Indians. I have never been able to detect a single instance of their use among the ancient Peruvians, and the custom would seem to be confined, at the present day, to a few localities. Two ornaments have been described consisting of feathers stained red and purple by aniline dyes. These were used by the Aymará Indians in the vicinity of La Paz, Bolivia, who have lived many years in close contact with the white man, and have become well acquainted with his cheap dyes. The use of these dyed feathers, which have a particularly garish and unnatural appearance, is, I believe, one evidence of the decadence which seems inevitable to Indians in their situation. Primitive man, even in his combinations of most brilliantly colored feathers, seldom produces effects that offend the artistic eye"--P. 17.

Book excerpt: The idea of a family level society, discussed and disputed by anthropologists for nearly half a century, assumes moving, breathing form in Families of the Forest. According to Allen Johnson’s deft ethnography, the Matsigenka people of southeastern Peru cannot be understood or appreciated except as a family level society; the family level of sociocultural integration is for them a lived reality. Under ordinary circumstances, the largest social units are individual households or small extended-family hamlets. In the absence of such "tribal" features as villages, territorial defense and warfare, local or regional leaders, and public ceremonials, these people put a premium on economic self-reliance, control of aggression within intimate family settings, and freedom to believe and act in their own perceived self-interest. Johnson shows how the Matsigenka, whose home is the Amazon rainforest, are able to meet virtually all their material needs with the skills and labor available to the individual household. They try to raise their children to be independent and self-reliant, yet in control of their emotional, impulsive natures, so that they can get along in intimate, cooperative living groups. Their belief that self-centered impulsiveness is dangerous and self-control is fulfilling anchors their moral framework, which is expressed in abundant stories and myths. Although, as Johnson points out, such people are often described in negative terms as lacking in features of social and cultural complexity, he finds their small-community lifestyle efficient, rewarding, and very well adapted to their environment.
