Book Peruvian Bark

Download or read book Peruvian Bark written by Sir Clements Robert Markham and published by . This book was released on 1880 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Markham, a Victorian geographer and explorer, conceived the notion of a cheap supply of quinine for the treatment of malaria for use in India. He organized several teams to go to Peru to collect the most promising varieties of cinchona, one of which he lead himself. After suffering great hardship in the jungle he managed to obtain some 500 seedlings, but they all died en route to India. Another of his teams was lead by Richard Spruce who did obtain seedlings and seeds, although they later proved to be of a variety that did not produce the largest amount of quinine. The work is an interesting adventure and description of events and is a valuable part of the story of the development of a cure for malaria, which is still of major concern. The author discusses the merits and locations of many cinchona varieties and related plants"--description from abebooks website.

Excerpt: ...sand, in which his feet sank to the ankles at every step, and when dead tired he got drenched by a thunder-storm, just before reaching his destination. Next morning he had a violent headache, but, as the mail left that day, he set to work and got lus plants properly packed and shipped. He then hurried back to Iiarranquilla to catch the return steamer up the Ch. m. Services of Mr. Weir. 2 79 Magdalena, all the while suffering from headache, and unfortunately he again got drenched in a thunder-storm. Next morning he was in a high fever on board the steamer, the violent headache being followed by numbness and paralysis, so that he could move nothing but his head. He was suffering from severe inflammation of the spinal cord. He was put on shore at Honda, and was lying helpless in a native hut for a fortnight. A compassionate American, settled at Honda, then took the sufferer into his house, where he remained three months, unable to move hand or foot. At length he was put on board a steamer, and shipped to England, where he arrived in April 1865. His recovery has since been very partial, and he is crippled and disabled for life. The Fellows of the Horticultural Society subscribed about 600 for his benefit, the interest of which produces 27 a year. On this, and his wife's earnings, Weir has since subsisted, "making the best of a bad job," as he says. It is very grievous to see an able and promising collector, full of zeal and energy, thus struck down in the prime of life. While health lasted he worked conscientiously and bravely, and not the least important part of his services were those he performed in the forests of Caravaya, for the Government and people of India. I made an urgent appeal for some small grant in...

Book Quinine s Predecessor

Download or read book Quinine s Predecessor written by Saul Jarcho and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of cinchona has traditionally begun with the romantic - and now discredited - story of Francisca Henriquez Ribera, the Countess of Chinchon. According to legend, the Countess became seriously ill during an outbreak of fever in Lima around 1623. Her husband, the Viceroy, learning of a medicinal tree bark used by the local Indians, ordered the bark tested and administered to his wife. Following her prompt recovery, the Countess championed the use of bark among the general populace, and thousands of lives were saved. The drug became known as pulvis Comitissae, the powder of the Countess, and later - misspelled by Linnaeus - as cinchona. In Quinine's Predecessor Saul Jarcho unravels a tangle of myth, hearsay, and fact to establish the definitive history of cinchona bark - the still-important source of modern quinine. Jarcho explains the discovery of the healing property of the substance, also known as Peruvian bark or Jesuits' bark, and traces the routes by which it was transmitted from South America to Spain and other countries. He recounts the controversy and resistance surrounding its acceptance by medical practitioners. And he offers the most complete account to date of the important work of Francesco Torti, who used the bark successfully in treating cerebral and other especially dangerous malarial infections.
