Book Encore

Download or read book Encore written by May Sarton and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author and newly minted octogenarian “demonstrates that old age can be a vibrant and liberating experience . . . fearless and triumphant” (Publishers Weekly). On the second day of her 80th year, May Sarton began a new journal. She wrote it because she wanted “to go on a little while longer;” to discover “what is really happening to me.” This triumphant sequel to Endgame—Sarton’s journal of her 79th year—is filled with the comforting minutiae of daily life, from gardening to planning dinners and floral arrangements to answering fan mail. The wonderful thing about getting older, Sarton writes, is “the freedom to be absurd, the freedom to forget things . . . the freedom to be eccentric.” Her other octogenarian pleasures include preparing for holidays and weddings, lunches with old friends and new admirers, the heady delight of critical recognition, and the rebirth of her lyric voice as she creates new poems. Yet Sarton knows that age can also bring pain and ill health, as well as a deepening awareness of the “perilousness of life on all sides, knowing that at any moment something frightful may happen.”

Book Phrase Structure and Grammatical Relations in Tagalog

Download or read book Phrase Structure and Grammatical Relations in Tagalog written by Paul Kroeger and published by Center for the Study of Language (CSLI). This book was released on 1993-07-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years or so, most of the work on the syntax of Philippine languages has been focused on the question of whether or not these languages can be said to have grammatical subjects, and if so which argument of a basic transitive clause should be analysed as being the subject. Paul Kroeger's contribution to this debate asserts that grammatical relations such as subject and object are syntactic notions, and must be identified on the basis of syntactic properties, rather than by semantic roles or discourse functions. A large number of syntactic processes in Tagalog uniquely select the argument which bears the nominative case. On the other hand, the data which have been used in the debate to assert the ambiguity of subjecthood are best analysed in terms of semantic rather than syntactic constraints. Together these facts support an analysis that takes the nominative argument as the subject. Kroeger examines the history of the subjecthood debate and uses data from Tagalog to test the theories that have been put forth. His conclusions entail consequences for certain linguistic concepts and theories, and lead Kroeger to assert that grammatical relations are not defined in terms of surface phrase structure configurations, contrary to the assumptions of many approaches to syntax including the Government-Binding theory. Paul Kroeger is presently doing fieldwork in Austronesian languages and teaching linguistics to fieldworkers from around the world.

Book Performing Femininity

Download or read book Performing Femininity written by Rachel Morley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oriental dancers, ballerinas, actresses and opera singers the figure of the female performer is ubiquitous in the cinema of pre-Revolutionary Russia. From the first feature film, Romashkov's Stenka Razin (1908), through the sophisticated melodramas of the 1910s, to Viskovsky's The Last Tango (1918), made shortly before the pre-Revolutionary film industry was dismantled by the new Soviet government, the female performer remains central. In this groundbreaking new study, Rachel Morley argues that early Russian film-makers used the character of the female performer to explore key contemporary concerns from changing conceptions of femininity and the emergence of the so-called New Woman, to broader questions concerning gender identity. Morley also reveals that the film-makers repeatedly used this archetype of femininity to experiment with cinematic technology and develop a specific cinematic language."
