Syntax can look back to a long tradition. Especially in the last 50 years, however, the interaction between syntactic theory and syntactic analysis has led to a rapid increase in analyses and theoretical suggestions. This second edition of the Handbook on Syntax adopts a unifying perspective and therefore does not place the division of syntactic theory into several schools to the fore, but the increase in knowledge resulting from the fruitful argumentations between syntactic analysis and syntactic theory. It uses selected phenomena of individual languages and their cross-linguistic realizations to explain what syntactic analyses can do and at the same time to show in what respects syntactic theories differ from each other. It investigates how syntax is related to neighbouring disciplines and investigate the role of the interfaces especially the relationship between syntax and phonology, morphology, compositional semantics, pragmatics, and the lexicon. The phenomena chosen bring together renowned experts in syntax, and represent the consensus reached as to what has to be considered as an important as well as illustrative syntactic phenomenon. The phenomena discuss do not only serve to show syntactic analyses, but also to compare theoretical approaches with each other.

Book excerpt: This book examines two questions: firstly, which dictionary type, bilingual or monolingual, is most effective for intermediate learners of German, and secondly, which features make monolingual dictionary definitions more effective. Using Chinese students from Hong Kong and Shanghai as the subjects of research, the effectiveness of the different dictionary types for reading comprehension and incidental vocabulary learning was measured experimentally and by the think-aloud method. The only monolingual learner dictionary for German available at that time proved linguistically too difficult for the intermediate proficiency level. Therefore, new definitions were developed based on findings from the think-aloud study and on principles promoted as user-friendly in lexicographic literature. Comparison of the two definition types revealed several features that determine their effectiveness for intermediate learners. Findings have theoretical and pedagogical implications. In the theoretical field, some lexicographic principles were recommended that are, unlike previous principles, based on empirical insights into user needs. In the pedagogical field, the findings provide an empirical basis for the evaluation and recommendation of suitable dictionaries for intermediate learners.

Book excerpt: Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.

Book excerpt: Die Stärken der Fachsprachenforschung lagen bisher in der sorgfältigen quantitativen und qualitativen Analyse umfangreicher Materialkorpora sowie in den zahlreichen Versuchen, neue linguistische Theorien und Methoden auf ihren spezifischen Untersuchungsgegenstand anzuwenden. Kritik ist daran geübt worden, daß diese Forschung keine eigene Theorie und keine selbständigen Methoden entwickelt hat. Diese Einwände wurden im Handbuch berücksichtigt. Gleichzeitig verweist das Handbuch auf noch wenige erforschte Gebiete und eröffnet so zukünftige Forschungsperspektiven. All das und noch vieles andere führte zur Formulierung der folgenden Hauptaufgaben: Schaffung eines deutlichen Bewußtseins dafür, welche vergangenen und gegenwärtigen Forschungsaktivitäten trotz unterschiedlicher Ausgangspunkte und Zielsetzungen und trotz der äußerlichen Zugehörigkeit zu anderen Disziplinen als Beiträge zur Fachsprachenforschung aufzufassen sind. Vermittlung der Einsicht in die Notwendigkeit, daß die Fachsprachenforschung eine weitestgehend konsensfähige Theorie der Fachsprachen erarbeiten muß, aus der Methoden und Forschungsprogramme abgeleitet werden können. Verklammerung der Fachsprachenforschung und der Terminologiewissenschaft, auch mit Blick auf (inter-) kulturelle Spezifika. Bemühen, die einzelphilologischen Grenzen zu überschreiten. Kritische Einschätzung von Hypothesen, Methoden und ihrer Anwendung sowie der bisherigen Ergebnisse. Konzeptionelle und darstellerische Verbindung diachroner und synchroner Aspekte. Anregung, Konzeption und Perspektivierung künftiger Forschung. Unterbreitung von Angeboten für die Umsetzung in die Praxis, z.B. durch Vorschläge für die Optimierung fachlicher Kommunikation, für die Standardisierung von Terminologien und Fachtextsorten und durch Empfehlungen zu Zielen, Inhalten und Methoden der Fachsprachenausbildung.
