Book Perspectives on Police Assaults in the South Central United States

Download or read book Perspectives on Police Assaults in the South Central United States written by Samuel G. Chapman and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 1306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V.1. The first volume of a final report on assaults on police officers in 1973 in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana describes the objectives of the project and the methodology that was used. Following the description of project objectives and methodology, the second part of this volume contains a discussion of a theoretical perspective of violence as it relates to assaults against police. It is a hypothetical statement about the underlying causes of violence against police and suggests that assaults on police are an inevitable consequence of the police role in society. The final section contains a descriptive profile of the assault event in which a number of characteristics concerning police are examined for both municipal police departments and state police and highway patrol agencies. Statistical information is given in tables and is broken down by demographic and geographic characteristics of both the assaulter and police officer. -- v.2. Second part of final report discusses characteristics of the officers and their assaulters to identify assault-prone officers. This document includes a discussion of the characteristics of assaulted and non-assaulted officers and analyzes those officer characteristics which differentiate assaulted officers and their non-assaulted counterparts. Following this discussion, personal characteristics, including age, rank and length of service, are examined utilizing correlation and multiple regression analysis to determine what factors are associated with and account for the largest amount of variation in assaults against police. The next section includes a discussion of the characteristics of persons charged with assaulting police officers and their reasons for acting as they did. The final section in this volume discusses alternative methods for developing psychological tests that may help to identify personality characteristics associated with 'assault prone' officers. Statistics are presented in charts and tables. -- v.3. Third part of final report discusses organizational, environmental, and police activity factors as they relate to assaults. The first study of this volume focuses on the police organization in an effort to determine whether or not assaulted officers perceive their working environment differently than non-assaulted officers. Next, the relationship between police assaults and 31 environmental and police activity characteristics is examined for 46 cities using correlation and multiple regression analysis techniques. Following this, the results of a microanalysis of assaults on police in Austin, Texas are reported. This volume concludes with a comprehensive bibliography of literature which, although selected from many diverse fields, nevertheless was found to be integrally related to the problem of police assaults.

Book The Sources of Violence in America and Their Consequences for Law Enforcement

Download or read book The Sources of Violence in America and Their Consequences for Law Enforcement written by C. Kenneth Meyer and published by Charles C. Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2001 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the sources of violence, examines why some people use violence against police officers, and shows that such violence is not always easily combated; relates the functions of the police to the sources of violence against them; reviews the evidence on assault against police; and references a large amount of previously published and some unpublished material in a format that should assist researchers. The first chapter provides a historical perspective on American violence and discusses the terms that people use when describing violent acts. The ethical bases of violence and what makes the use of physical force a legitimate activity are explored in the second chapter. This discussion facilitates a better understanding of why different segments of American society have disparate views about when it is proper to use violence to settle disputes; when law enforcement officers should intervene in civilian matters; and whether civilians should use physical violence against police officers who are perceived as exceeding the limits of their authority. Chapter 3 explores the extensive theoretical literature on violence and describes the major schools of thought about its origins. This is intended to provide a better understanding of the types of violence that are directed against police officers. Chapter 4 addresses such concepts as law, order, legitimacy, majority rule, and professionalism as they apply to police activities. Chapter 5 outlines the major approaches to explaining criminal violence, and chapter 6 sets the assault incident within a theoretical context. Remaining chapters deal with the characteristics of assaulted officers, assailant characteristics, characteristics of the assault situation, and geographical patterns of American violence. Suggestions are offered about the areas where additional research is required before definitive answers can be reached and policy remedies can be selected.

Book Catching Hell in the City of Angels

Download or read book Catching Hell in the City of Angels written by João Helion Costa Vargas and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, Los Angeles has become the most racially and economically divided city in the United States. In the poorest parts of South Central Los Angeles, buildings in disrepair--the legacy of racial unrest. Moving beyond stereotypes of South Central's predominantly African American residents, João H. Costa Vargas recounts his almost two years living in the district. Personal, critical, and disquieting, Catching Hell in the City of Angels examines the ways in which economic and social changes in the twentieth century have affected the black community, and powerfully conveys the experiences that bind and divide its people. Through compelling stories of South Central, including his own experience as an immigrant of color, Vargas presents portraits of four groups. He talks daily with women living in a low-income Watts apartment building; works with activists in a community organization against police brutality; interacts with former gang members trying to maintain a 1992 truce between the Bloods and the Crips; and listens to amateur jazz musicians who perform in a gentrified section of the neighborhood. In each case he describes the worldviews and the definitions of "blackness" these people use to cope with oppression. Vargas finds, in turn, that blackness is a form of racial solidarity, a vehicle for the renewal of African American culture, and a political expression of revolutionary black nationalism. Vargas reveals that the social fault lines in South Central reflect both contemporary disparities and long-term struggles. In doing so, he shows both the racialized power that makes "blackness" a prized term of identity and the terrible price that African Americans have paid for this emphasis. Ultimately, Catching Hell in the City of Angels tells the story of urban America through the lives of individuals from diverse, overlapping, and vibrant communities. João H. Costa Vargas is assistant professor in the Center for African and African American Studies and the department of anthropology at the University of Texas, Austin. Robin D. G. Kelley is the William B. Ransford Professor of Cultural and Historical Studies at Columbia University. He is the author of numerous books, including Yo Mama's Disfunktional: Fighting the Culture Wars in Urban America.
