Book excerpt: Although, sexual offending perpetrated by males has recently received much attention the recognition of female sex offenders has been measured. Published research on female perpetrators of sexual abuse only appeared in the 1980{u2019}s and a limited amount of material has been published since then. This thesis has examined a number of issues relating to the area of female sexual offending. A review of the current literature on female sexual offending was completed and a number of limitations were identified. Following this five research studies were conducted. A survey of the perspectives of Irish child protection workers highlighted the need for further training, research and the development of a risk assessment tool. The analysis of a female paedophilia website revealed that women show the same cognitive distortions as their male counterparts. Consequently it was argued that similarities between male and female offenders need to be recognized. The third study revealed that current models of female sex offenders do not encompass the full range of women who have a sexual interest in children. Finally, study four explored the viability of a risk assessment tool for measuring deviant sexual interest in women that is analogous to those used for male sex offenders. The result of these analyses revealed that significant gaps exist in our current understanding of female sexual offending and the thesis concludes with a number of recommendations that further our knowledge of this relatively unexplored and poorly understood issue. The principal findings are that: female sexual offending is a real issue, they display similar profiles to that of males and current explanations require reevaluation.
