Book Perspectives of Regional Development Around the Baltic Sea

Download or read book Perspectives of Regional Development Around the Baltic Sea written by Karin Peschel and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper, written in honor of Ake Andersson, supports his view that we have now arrived at a time of logistical revolution, wherein information processing and communication capacity as well as the growth of the knowledge base are quintessential to the socioeconomic development of society. This paradigm underlies an analysis of the development perspectives of the countries along the southern rim of the Baltic Sea. The core elements of the transition to a market economy and the legacy of the past are considered. Furthermore, the question is asked whether a Baltic Sea Region may arise in future. A theoretical discussion of those elements that promote the formation of economic spaces in market economies and a cluster analysis of actual international trade leads us to the conclusion that a Baltic Sea Region comprising all regions bordering the Baltic Sea will not come into existence. However, a Scandinavian-Baltic economic space could arise, representing an enlargement of the already existing Scandinavian core.

Book excerpt: HauptbeschreibungGo North was the programmatic title of an international conference on Baltic Sea Region Studies that took place at Humboldt University of Berlin from April 4-6, 2005. It was hosted by the BalticStudyNet project, which is part of the European Union's Erasmus Mundus programme for the global promotion of European higher education. In order to discuss the past, present and future of Baltic Sea Region Studies, the Berlin conference brought together about fifty government representatives and scholars from all Baltic Sea Region countries, including Russia, as well as from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. The basic idea of the Go North conference was to encourage a fundamental change of perspective - away from intra-regional and towards extra-regional and truly global approaches to the Baltic Sea Region: How is the Baltic Sea region perceived when viewed, let's say, from Australia? What, if anything, would a Chinese student find typical, extraordinary, or even unique when looking at the region? Why should a scholar from Mexico, South Africa or India wish to do research in and/or about the Baltic Sea Region? Consequently, third country views on Europe's North and the Baltic Sea Region were a feature of many of the presentations and panel discussions during the conference, which are documented in this volume.

Book Economic Perspectives Qualification and Labour Market Integration of Women in the Baltic Sea Region

Download or read book Economic Perspectives Qualification and Labour Market Integration of Women in the Baltic Sea Region written by Christina Boll and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 9 of the Baltic Sea Academy Series: Demographic and economic structural change affect the development of the whole Baltic Sea Region in the future. Coping with these challenges requires initiatives aiming at labour market issues. A shrinking and ageing labour force entails the danger of shortage of labour supply in general while demand for skilled labour increases in the course of knowledge-based structural change. There are large potentials for the Baltic Sea Region to strengthen its competitiveness by better tapping its human resources. Among these an advanced integration of women in the labour market is at the top of the agenda. This book analyses the current economic and demographic structures in the Baltic Sea Region and assesses the development perspectives. In this context, it shapes the educational attainment and labour market involvement of women and points to considerable hidden potentials. The Baltic Sea Academy is a non-profit network of 16 colleges and universities focusing on Education, Qualification and R&D for small and medium sized enterprises.

Book Regional Development Reconsidered

Download or read book Regional Development Reconsidered written by Gündüz Atalik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years research on regional development has increased dramatically. Real-world concerns have - to a certain extent - driven this scientific concern of interest. The field has been given a big boost in particular by the process of European integration and the attempt to understand how this deeper integration will work at the regional level. This volume makes a modest attempt to reconsider the issue of regional development mainly from an European perspective and in the light of the transition of society towards a knowledge-driven economy. It originated from the Thirteenth European Advanced Studies Institute in Regional Science, held in Istanbul, July 2-8, 2000. In producing the book, as friends and colleagues, we have benefited from the possibility of exchange of ideas and experience. We have also received useful assistance from the referees who have offered observations and advice in their written reports. The soundness of their comments has contributed immensely to the quality of the volume. We should, in addition, like to acknowledge the timely manner in which contributing authors have responded to our requests, and their willingness to follow the stringent editorial guidelines.

Book The Baltic Sea Region A Comprehensive Guide

Download or read book The Baltic Sea Region A Comprehensive Guide written by Bernd Henningsen and published by BWV Verlag. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baltic Sea Region, at the crossroads between East and West, North and South, has long been marked by cultural, ethnical and ideological borders. Overcoming a history of conflict and separation, since the end of the Cold War the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea established widely valued formats of regional cooperation based on shared challenges and opportunities. In comparison with larger regions, however, the Baltic Sea Area is still a blank spot on the global map. This volume's intention is to fill this spot with colour and facts. It provides students, young researchers and other interested parties with basic knowledge of the region. The volume offers a comprehensive introduction into its history, politics, economy and culture, taking into account the various countries' commonalities and differences. By introducing concepts of regionalism and region-building, as well as analysing the structures of regional cooperation the authors and editors demonstrate the Baltic Sea Area's model function as a European macro-region.--Back cover.
