Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the perspectives of Black male coaches regarding their underrepresentation in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I athletics. A second purpose was to identify proactive strategies from the coaches to increase the number of Black male coaches at the Division I level. The participants were seven Black male assistant coaches from a Division I flagship university in the Midwest region of the United States. The research method was descriptive-qualitative. The primary data sources were face-to-face semi-structured interviews and e-mail follow-ups. The data were analyzed using a generative coding strategy and three emergent themes were uncovered. These themes were: (a) disadvantaged, (b) how things are, and (c) networking. The implications from the study revealed suggestions for university athletic directors and presidents to deal with the current situation regarding the underrepresentation of Black males in Division I athletics. The first implication is that athletic directors and university presidents need to be proactive and hire more Black coaches to change the underrepresentation of Black male coaches. The second implication would be for the implementation of the National Football League's Rooney rule for all NCAA athletic departments. It would be a move in the right direction towards leveling the playing field for job opportunities in Division I coaching. Lastly, the final implication of this research question is that all Black coaches in Division I athletics need to learn and understand the purpose of the Black Coaches Association and other strategies available to them.

The researcher used a phenomenological approach to discover and understand the lived experiences of African American NCAA Division I men's head basketball coaches that are considered to be successful leaders in their field in order to gain their perspective and personal insight into barriers and potential solutions to those barriers in this particular field. Active and systemic discrimination, along with institutionalized racism and bias, are essential factors in this dissertation and continue to be central issues in the hiring practices within NCAA men's basketball head coaching and continue to be challenges for African American NCAA Division I men's head basketball coaches along with certain aspects of this current society hiring practices along with other aspects of this society. While highlighting racial inequalities in hiring practices and retention rates for African American NCAA men's head basketball coaches. The research discussed the history of African Americans' relationship with basketball from a player and coaching perspective. The research also discussed how African American NCAA Division I men's head basketball coaches identify, measure, and track success and maintain high-performance levels within the team and for themselves. Finally, the research intended to contribute to the existing knowledge and assist current and prospective coaches, universities, and the NCAA in hiring and retention policies and procedures for all head basketball coaches. Purposive sampling was used to interview 12 successful African American NCAA Division I men's head basketball coaches. The research findings and the accompanying literature suggested that several best practices are needed to become a successful African American head basketball coach at the collegiate level.

Book excerpt: A critical look at the tension between the larger role of the university and the commercialization of college sports Unwinding Madness is the most comprehensive examination to date of how the NCAA has lost its way in the governance of intercollegiate athletics—and why it is incapable of achieving reform and must be replaced. The NCAA has placed commercial success above its responsibilities to protect the academic primacy, health and well-being of college athletes and fallen into an educational, ethical, and economic crisis. As long as intercollegiate athletics reside in the higher education environment, these programs must be academically compatible with their larger institutions, subordinate to their educational mission, and defensible from a not-for-profit organizational standpoint. The issue has never been a matter of whether intercollegiate athletics belongs in higher education as an extracurricular offering. Rather, the perennial challenge has been how these programs have been governed and conducted. The authors propose detailed solutions, starting with the creation of a new national governance organization to replace the NCAA. At the college level, these proposals will not diminish the revenue production capacity of sports programs but will restore academic integrity to the enterprise, provide fairer treatment of college athletes with better health protections, and restore the rights and freedoms of athletes, which have been taken away by a professionalized athletics mentality that controls the cost of its athlete labor force and overpays coaches and athletic directors. Unwinding Madness recognizes that there is no easy fix to the problems now facing college athletics. But the book does offer common sense, doable solutions that respect the rights of athletes, protects their health and well-being while delivering on the promise of a bona fide educational degree program.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative research was to investigate the relationship among self-identified Black male National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors and their lived experiences of career attainment through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT). In addition to document analyses, this study used a phenomenological approach to answer two research questions. The first research question-referred to as "Factors Impacting Career" ("Factors")-asked what are personal, professional, social, and institutional factors that impact the individual career trajectories of Black male athletic directors? The second research question-referred to as "Strategies to Overcome Barriers" ("Strategies")-asked how do Black male athletic directors limit any actual or perceived barriers to their career development? Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were used to collect information from all (N = 12) of the FBS Black male athletic directors regarding their perspectives and perception of their credentials, and lived experiences. The results of the study revealed themes developed from the Gioia methodology. The finding of the study revealed three overarching dimensions that impacted the athletic directors' career trajectory. Allyship and nepotism were the two dimensions associated with "Factors" while networking with other minority leaders was the dimension associated with "Strategies". Pertaining to the "Factors" research question, the allyship dimension was supported by the emergent themes of mentorship and diverse network while the nepotism dimension was supported by the emergent themes of lack of privilege and cultural differences. Pertaining to the "Strategies" research question, the dimension of networking with other minority leaders was supported by the emergent themes of intrinsic motivation, gathering extensive experience, and being intentional about networking. Overall, the three overarching dimensions (i.e., allyship, nepotism, and networking with other minority leaders) and the seven emergent themes (i.e., diverse network, lack of privilege, mentorship, cultural differences, intrinsic motivation, gathering extensive experience, and being intentional about networking) advance the sport management field and CRT research by providing a deeper understanding of the perceptions and perspectives of some of the most powerful men in the sport industry who also happen to be Black. The study results may be used to understand the difference in opportunities in experience for Black athletic directors compared to white athletic directors. Implications reveal insights regarding Black athletic directors' challenges and limited opportunities-which confirm the hegemonic situation in sport leadership-and strategies for overcoming barriers.

A case study of six African American, Division 1 FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) collegiate student athletes was conducted along with seventeen supplemental interviews with community members, parents, coaches and former athletes and fans. The participants answered questions that explored education, success, identity construction, ethnicity and sport. Archival data was also reviewed framing the discussion on football in Florida, links between education and sport participation and African American male academic achievement. While many perspectives varied, there were collective trends in relation to how African American Athletes in Florida define themselves as well as their perspectives on ethnicity and sport. The individual perspectives and collective trends are discussed in this dissertation.
