Book Perspectives in Human Biology

Download or read book Perspectives in Human Biology written by Loren W. Knapp and published by Brooks Cole. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Human Biology offers students a unique look at the ways we study ourselves and the connection between the smallest units of matter (atoms and molecules) to the largest (ecosystems). Covering the basics of human biology, Knapp begins with a concise overview of science and scientific thinking. Early on, the author discusses the chemistry of life and cells and tissues, linking the conceptual nature of atoms and molecules to the actual behavior of cells. Discussions of human behavior, evolution, and genetics further clarify our link to all life on Earth. He concludes with a look at the bioshpere, the delicate balance of forces, and the roles science and human intelligence play now and in the future.

Book Perspectives in Human Growth Development and Maturation

Download or read book Perspectives in Human Growth Development and Maturation written by Parasmani Dasgupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One morning in 1969, out of the blue, I received a letter which both distressed and astonished me. It was from a Prof. S. R. Das in Calcutta, who requested me to accept, for eventual analysis, a mountain of anthropometric data he had accumulated, as he was ill and did not expect to survive to analyse it himself. The data provided the astonishment; twenty-two anthropometric characters recorded every six months or a year, over a period of 14 years, in a mixed longitudinal study of some 560 children, aged six months to twenty years. Most were in families with siblings also in the study, and every child was measured every time by S. R. Das himself. The archive was unique, combining the personal anthropometry of R. H. Whitehouse in the Harpenden Growth Study and the family approach of the Fels Growth Study. This was a study of which neither I, nor anyone of my acquaintance, had heard. Even in India, Prof. Das' work was scarcely known. It turned out Das was a scholarly man, quiet and unassuming, absolutely committed to his Sarsuna-Barisha Growth Study, just the obverse of the professional showman. Clearly this was not a request I could refuse, although I already had in hand enough projects to occupy Siva himself.

Book Perspectives In Human Biology Humans In The Australasian Region

Download or read book Perspectives In Human Biology Humans In The Australasian Region written by Emily Rousham and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-11-18 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes its subtitle from the theme of the ASHB meeting for 1995 “Humans in the Australasian Region”. Papers from the conference include a philosophical discussion of the ‘Great Ape Project’ by Colin Groves, and ‘An Osteological study of Holocene Biological Evolution of the Malay Peninsula Aborigines’ by David Bulbeck. In the short communications section, Colin Groves considers the hominid and faunal material of the Australia-New Guinea region which may explain the failure of Homo erectus to colonize Australia.Additional papers are from Peter Lisowski who provides a historical and contemporary overview of health care in China, Lincoln Schmitt who discusses the interpretation of DNA variation in the legal setting, and Charles Oxnard and Alanah Buck who present their work on techniques of assessing osteoporosis from non-invasive Fourier analyses of bone structure. The Evolution of Modern Diversity: a Study of Cranial Variation, by Marta Mirazon Lahr, is reviewed by Leonard Freedman.

Book Social Information Transmission and Human Biology

Download or read book Social Information Transmission and Human Biology written by Jonathan CK Wells and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-05-22 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has emphasized that socially transmitted information may affect both the gene pool and the phenotypes of individuals and populations, and that an improved understanding of evolutionary issues is beneficial to those working towards the improvement of human health. In response to a growing interest across disciplines for information regarding the contribution of social behavior to a range of biological outcomes, Social Information Transmission and Human Biology connects the work of evolutionary theorists and those dealing with practical issues in human health and demographics. Combining evolutionary models with biomedical research, authors from various disciplines look at how human behavior influences health, and how reproductive fitness sheds light on the processes that shaped the evolution of human behavior. Both academic and medical researchers will find much useful insight in this text.
