Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first introduction to the eye came more than three decades ago when my close friend and mentor, the late Professor Isaac C. Michaelson, convinced me that studying the biochemistry of ocular tissues would be a rewarding pursuit. I hastened to explain that I knew nothing about the subject, since relatively few basic biochemical studies on ocular tissues had appeared in the world literature. Professor Michaelson assured me, however, that two books on eye biochemistry had already been written. One of them, a beautiful monograph by Arlington Krause ( 1934) of Johns Hopkins Hospital, is we II worth reading even today for its historical perspective. The other, published 22 years later, was written by Antoinette Pirie and Ruth van Heyningen ( 1956), whose pioneering achievements in eye biochemistry at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology in Oxford, England are known throughout the eye research community and beyond. To their credit are classical investigations on retinal, corneal, and lens biochemistry, beginning in the 1940s and continuing for many decades thereafter. Their important book written in 1956 on the Biochemistry of the Eye is a volume that stood out as a landmark in this field for many years. In recent years, however, a spectacular amount of new information has been gener ated in ocular biochemistry. Moreover, there is increasing specialization among investiga tors in either a specific field of biochemistry or a particular ocular tissue.

Download or read book Understanding Life written by Ronald J. Duchovic and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Life presents an atoms-first approach to chemistry. Written for non-majors in chemistry, the text covers a broad range of topics and provides a clear, comprehensive overview. After a conceptual orientation to the subject, students will learn about the tools and origins of chemistry and the classical chemical paradigms. Other topics include modern bonding models, isomers, structures in organic chemistry and biochemistry, entropy, and metabolism. The readings address the overlap between chemistry and molecular biology. They present crucial concepts from thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, and quantum theory, which form the foundation of modern physical chemistry.Understanding Life offers an informative and accessible alternative to standard chemistry texts which are often too long for a one-semester course. The anthology is an ideal text or supplemental reader for a one-semester course designed for the undergraduate non-major.

Book Perspectives in Biochemistry Volume 2

Download or read book Perspectives in Biochemistry Volume 2 written by Hans Neurath and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1991-06-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of concise and authoritative articles reports on the exciting advances and progress in the diversified areas of biochemical research. First published in ACS's renowned journal Biochemistry in 1989 and 1990, these 29 articles were written by experts in the field. They inform the general reader of the past developments, the current status, and the future direction of areas of particular significance, including: structure and function of proteins; enzyme structure and mechanism; membrane proteins and transmembrane phenomena; nucleic acids and protein biosynthesis; proteolytic processing and protein degradation; cell growth and regulation; and bioenergetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this series is to provide authoritative reviews in the rapidly expanding area of bioinorganic chemistry. The series will present "state of the art" reviews covering the whole field of bioinorganic chemistry. The present volume is the fourth in the series and covers the topics: lithium in biology, the structure and function of ceroplasmin, rhenium complexes in nuclear medicine, the anti-HIV activity of macrocyclic polyamines and their metal complexes for dinuclear phosphoesterase enzymes.

Book Phylogenetic and Biochemical Perspectives

Download or read book Phylogenetic and Biochemical Perspectives written by T.P. Mommsen and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new series on The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Fishes grew out of the demand for state-of-the-art review articles in a rapidly expanding field of research. Up to the present, most research literature on biochemistry involved rats and humans, but new breakthroughs in the piscine setting have indicated that the field is ready for a review series of its own. Because of funding and experimental availability restrictions, most research in the field has dealt with fish and insects. Within the insect field, comparative biochemistry and comparative physiology have proceeded along independent paths as opposed to the piscine field, where the tendency has been for the latter to envelop the former. This volume sets out to make comparative biochemistry and comparative physiology independent of each other within the piscine setting, another important rationale for this review series as well as detailing the phylogenetic evolution of fishes. The goal of the series is to provide researchers and students with an appropriate balance between experimental results and theoretical concepts.

Book Alkaloids Chemical and Biological Perspectives

Download or read book Alkaloids Chemical and Biological Perspectives written by S.W. Pelletier and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 13 of this series presents five timely reviews of research on alkaloids such as new developments in the chemistry and biology of alkaloids from amphibian skins. It provides a synopsis and tabulation of the hundreds of alkaloids that have been detected, with an emphasis on occurrence, structure, dietary origins, and biological activity. Alkaloids containing the 1, 2, 3, 3a, 8, 8a - hexahydropyrrolo [2,3b] indole ring system and the cyclotryptamines are discussed. An exhaustive list of available structures is provided. The chemical and biological structures have been evaluated critically so as to identify existing errors and expose irregularities in appearance or biological function. In addition, attention is drawn to the possible implications of the accumulated knowledge related to the synthesis, occurrence, and biochemistry of this class of alkaloids.Recent work on alkaloids containing the comparatively non – basic pyrrole ring system is summarized. One of the chapters covers isolation, structure elucidation, biological activity, and selected chemical syntheses of certain pyrrole alkaloids.Recent developments in the chemistry of diterpenoid and norditerpenoid alkaloids occurring in Aconitum, Delphinium and Consolida genera of the Ranunculaceae family used in Chinese and Indian medicine are surveyed and the book ends with a focus on transition metal – catalyzed carbonylations as efficient and novel approaches to the construction of piperidine, izidine and quinazoline alkaloids, which occur in great numbers in nature.
