Book Phylogenetic and Biochemical Perspectives

Download or read book Phylogenetic and Biochemical Perspectives written by T.P. Mommsen and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new series on The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Fishes grew out of the demand for state-of-the-art review articles in a rapidly expanding field of research. Up to the present, most research literature on biochemistry involved rats and humans, but new breakthroughs in the piscine setting have indicated that the field is ready for a review series of its own. Because of funding and experimental availability restrictions, most research in the field has dealt with fish and insects. Within the insect field, comparative biochemistry and comparative physiology have proceeded along independent paths as opposed to the piscine field, where the tendency has been for the latter to envelop the former. This volume sets out to make comparative biochemistry and comparative physiology independent of each other within the piscine setting, another important rationale for this review series as well as detailing the phylogenetic evolution of fishes. The goal of the series is to provide researchers and students with an appropriate balance between experimental results and theoretical concepts.

Book Stress Signaling in Plants Genomics and Proteomics Perspective Volume 2

Download or read book Stress Signaling in Plants Genomics and Proteomics Perspective Volume 2 written by Maryam Sarwat and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume set takes an in-depth look at stress signaling in plants from a uniquely genomic and proteomic perspective and offers a comprehensive treatise that covers all of the signaling pathways and mechanisms that have been researched so far. Currently, plant diseases, extreme weather caused by climate change, drought and an increase in metals in soil are amongst the major limiting factors of crop production worldwide. They devastate not only the food supply but also the economy of a nation. With global food scarcity in mind, there is an urgent need to develop crop plants with increased stress tolerance so as to meet the global food demands and to preserve the quality of our planet. In order to do this, it is necessary to understand how plants react and adapt to stress from the genomic and proteomic perspective. Plants adapt to stress conditions by activating cascades of molecular mechanisms, which result in alterations in gene expression and synthesis of protective proteins. From the perception of the stimulus to the transduction of the signal, followed by an appropriate cellular response, the plants employ a complex network of primary and secondary messenger molecules. Cells exercise a large number of noticeably distinct signaling pathways to regulate their activity. In order to contend with different environmental adversities, plants have developed a series of mechanisms at the physiological, cellular and molecular levels that respond to stress. Each chapter in this volume provides an in-depth explanation of what we currently know of a particular aspect of stress signaling and where we are heading. Together with the highly successful first volume, Stress Signaling in Plants: Genomics and Proteomics Perspective, Volume 2 covers an important aspect of plant biology for both students and seasoned researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death and dying experiences are not common across human race because humans do not share common cultural heritage and physical environment. The fact of death thus can be considered as socially constructed fact abounded by idiosyncratic religious beliefs and rituals existing within social life. It is almost impossible to have common consensual understanding of death and dying. This book tries to investigate various sources of knowledge about death in multiple disciplines from sociological lenses.

Book Integrative Human Biochemistry

Download or read book Integrative Human Biochemistry written by Andrea T. Da Poian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers in detail the mechanisms for how energy is managed in the human body. The basic principles that elucidate the reactivity and physical interactions of matter are addressed and quantified with simple approaches. Three-dimensional representations of molecules are presented throughout the book so molecules can be viewed as unique entities in their shape and function. The book is focused on the molecular mechanisms of cellular processes in the context of human physiological situations such as fasting, feeding and physical exercise, in which metabolic regulation is highlighted. Furthermore the book uses key historical experiments that opened up new concepts in biochemistry to further illustrate how the human body functions at molecular level, helping students to appreciate how scientific knowledge emerges. New to this edition: - 30 challenging practical case studies (2-3 at the end of each chapter) based on movies, novels, biographies, documentaries, paintings, and other cultural and artistic creations far beyond canonic academic exercises. - A set of challenging questions and problems in the end of each case study to further engage students with the applications of medical biochemistry - Insights into the answers to the challenging questions to help steer teaching/learning interactions key to productive lectures, PBL (problem-based learning) or traditional tutorials, or e-learning approaches. Advance praise for the second edition: “The Challenging Cases are compelling both from a scientific viewpoint and for the perspective they provide on the history of medicine.” David M. Jameson, University of Hawaii “Using case studies to reinforce the biochemistry lessons is extremely effective – as well as entertaining!” Joseph P. Albanesi, UT Southwestern Medical Center Advance Praise for the first edition: “This textbook provides a modern and integrative perspective of human biochemistry and will be a faithful companion to health science students following curricula in which this discipline is addressed. This textbook will be a most useful tool for the teaching community.” Joan Guinovart Former director of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine, Barcelona, Spain, and former president of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, IUBMB
