Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first introduction to the eye came more than three decades ago when my close friend and mentor, the late Professor Isaac C. Michaelson, convinced me that studying the biochemistry of ocular tissues would be a rewarding pursuit. I hastened to explain that I knew nothing about the subject, since relatively few basic biochemical studies on ocular tissues had appeared in the world literature. Professor Michaelson assured me, however, that two books on eye biochemistry had already been written. One of them, a beautiful monograph by Arlington Krause ( 1934) of Johns Hopkins Hospital, is we II worth reading even today for its historical perspective. The other, published 22 years later, was written by Antoinette Pirie and Ruth van Heyningen ( 1956), whose pioneering achievements in eye biochemistry at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology in Oxford, England are known throughout the eye research community and beyond. To their credit are classical investigations on retinal, corneal, and lens biochemistry, beginning in the 1940s and continuing for many decades thereafter. Their important book written in 1956 on the Biochemistry of the Eye is a volume that stood out as a landmark in this field for many years. In recent years, however, a spectacular amount of new information has been gener ated in ocular biochemistry. Moreover, there is increasing specialization among investiga tors in either a specific field of biochemistry or a particular ocular tissue.

Book Phylogenetic and Biochemical Perspectives

Download or read book Phylogenetic and Biochemical Perspectives written by T.P. Mommsen and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new series on The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Fishes grew out of the demand for state-of-the-art review articles in a rapidly expanding field of research. Up to the present, most research literature on biochemistry involved rats and humans, but new breakthroughs in the piscine setting have indicated that the field is ready for a review series of its own. Because of funding and experimental availability restrictions, most research in the field has dealt with fish and insects. Within the insect field, comparative biochemistry and comparative physiology have proceeded along independent paths as opposed to the piscine field, where the tendency has been for the latter to envelop the former. This volume sets out to make comparative biochemistry and comparative physiology independent of each other within the piscine setting, another important rationale for this review series as well as detailing the phylogenetic evolution of fishes. The goal of the series is to provide researchers and students with an appropriate balance between experimental results and theoretical concepts.

Book Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry

Download or read book Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry written by Multiple authors and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, it was 60 years since the eminent Soviet researcher, a disciple and a successor of Ivan Pavlov, Leon Orbeli had proclaimed the birth of a new branch of physiology, evolutionary physiology. In the same year, his ideas were embodied in the foundation in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg, of the present Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This anniversary book includes the selected works carried out recently by his followers at the same institute. While addressing some hot aspects of evolutionary physiology and biochemistry, they demonstrate that this branch of physiology really represents a discipline in its own right.

Download or read book Understanding Life written by Ronald J. Duchovic and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthology Understanding Life presents an atoms-first approach to chemistry. Written for non-majors in chemistry, the text covers a broad range of topics and provides a clear, comprehensive overview. The selected readings recognize important changes that have taken place in the scientific world in recent years. After a conceptual orientation to the subject, students will learn about the tools and origins of chemistry and the classical chemical paradigms. Other topics include modern bonding models, isomers, structures in organic chemistry and biochemistry, entropy, and metabolism. The readings address the overlap between chemistry and molecular biology. They present crucial concepts from thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, and quantum theory, which form the foundation of modern physical chemistry. The text includes exercises at the end of each chapter and their solutions which allow students to practice their understanding of the material. Understanding Life offers an informative and accessible alternative to standard chemistry texts which are often too long for a one-semester course. The anthology is an ideal text or supplemental reader for a one-semester course designed for the undergraduate non-major.

Book Cooperativity Theory in Biochemistry

Download or read book Cooperativity Theory in Biochemistry written by T.L. Hill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few decades we have witnessed an era of remarkable growth in the field of molecular biology. In 1950 very little was known of the chemical constitution of biological systems, the manner in which information was trans mitted from one organism to another, or the extent to which the chemical basis of life is unified. The picture today is dramatically different. We have an almost bewildering variety of information detailing many different aspects of life at the molecular level. These great advances have brought with them some breath-taking insights into the molecular mechanisms used by nature for rep licating, distributing and modifying biological information. We have learned a great deal about the chemical and physical nature of the macromolecular nucleic acids and proteins, and the manner in which carbohydrates, lipids and smaller molecules work together to provide the molecular setting of living sys tems. It might be said that these few decades have replaced a near vacuum of information with a very large surplus. It is in the context of this flood of information that this series of monographs on molecular biology has been organized. The idea is to bring together in one place, between the covers of one book, a concise assessment of the state of the subject in a well-defined field. This will enable the reader to get a sense of historical perspective-what is known about the field today-and a description of the frontiers of research where our knowledge is increasing steadily.
