Download or read book Gambling with the Land written by Rodolphe de Koninck and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling with the Land surveys and analyzes systematically the production and trade of all major agricultural crops throughout Southeast Asian between 1960 and the late 2000s. After reviewing the specific economic, social and political role of agriculture in the eight major agricultural countries - Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines - since the end of the colonial period, the authors show how Southeast Asian agricultures have gradually satisfied local demand for food while catering increasingly to the world market for agricultural produce, predominantly through the export of industrial crops, with rice even remaining a major regional export. In terms of food security, the region has even been able to improve its position. All this has largely been achieved through massive intensification of cultivation and equally significant territorial expansion of the agricultural realm, a dynamic combination rarely achieved anywhere else in the world at such a scale. Expansion has even reached into the maritime domain, aquaculture growing even faster than agriculture per se. Both forms of expansion, on land as well as sea, are accentuating the pressure on environmental resources, particularly forests, including mangroves. It remains to be seen whether this gambling with the land and the sea can be sustained without jeopardizing regional food security. Not only are the stakes very high, but in nearly all countries agricultural policies, particularly those concerning agricultural frontiers and hence labour migration patterns, are increasingly defined by large scale private enterprises. Providing an insightful and critical overview of Southeast Asia's agricultural dynamism, Gambling with the Land is an indispensable reference book for all those interested in agricultural and environmental issues and an essential component of any library collection dealing with Asia.
Download or read book Managing Water Under Uncertainty and Risk written by Unesco and published by Unesco. This book was released on 2012 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This flagship report is a comprehensive review that gives an overall picture of the world's freshwater resources. It analyses pressures from decisions that drive demand for water and affect its availability. It offers tools and response options to help leaders in government, the private sector and civil society address current and future challenges. It suggests ways in which institutions can be reformed and their behaviour modified, and explores possible sources of financing for the urgently needed investment in water. The WWDR4 is a milestone within the WWDR series, reporting directly on regions and highlighting hotspots, and it has been mainstreamed for gender equality. It introduces a thematic approach - 'Managing Water under Uncertainty and Risk' - in the context of a world which is changing faster than ever in often unforeseeable ways, with increasing uncertainties and risks. It highlights that historical experience will no longer be sufficient to approximate the relationship between the quantities of available water and shifting future demands. Like the earlier editions, the WWDR4 also contains country-level case studies describing the progress made in meeting water-related objectives. The WWDR4 also seeks to show that water has a central role in all aspects of economic development and social welfare, and that concerted action via a collective approach of the water-using sectors is needed to ensure water's many benefits are maximized and shared equitably and that water-related development goals are achieved.

Download or read book Protected Area Management written by Barbara Sladonja and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-08-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas are at the base of the most national and international conservation strategies. Due to the many unpredictable elements in ecology matters, each protected area requires a case-specific set of guidelines but a common issue is how to cope with human interaction. The management of protected areas is replete with challenges and the only way to gain understanding and achieve greater management possibilities is to exchange experiences and knowledge. Environmental managers are aware of that and together with scientists are looking for more modern and better solutions, both with respect to natural resources and human interactions in many issues regarding nature protection. This publication presents reviews and research results on protected areas management, as well as 12 case studies derived from around the world with the aim of improving management effectiveness of the protected areas.
