Book excerpt: We are using CR-39 foils for personnel nuetron dosimetry at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. We have developed a three-step electrochemical etching procedure that includes low-frequency electrochemical etching at low frequency and at elevated temperatures. Our first etching step is at 60 Hz, 3000 V for 5 hours in a 60°C oven using 6.5 N KOH. The second etching step consists of an additional 23-minute etch at 60°C, 2.0 kHz, and 3000 V, which increases the track size and makes them relatively uniform in size. The final step is a 15-minute post etch at 60°C, which gives the tracks a smoother appearance. The foils are etched in etch chambers that can etch up to 24 foils. Several of these chambers can be used simultaneously with a single power supply. These chambers are rugged and have been used daily for over a year. 8 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.

Book Personnel Neutron Dosimetry Applications of Track size Distributions on Electrochemically Etched CR 39 Foils

Download or read book Personnel Neutron Dosimetry Applications of Track size Distributions on Electrochemically Etched CR 39 Foils written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The track-size distribution on electrochemically etched CR-39 foils can be used to obtain some limited information on the incident neutron spectra. Track-size distributions on CR-39 foils can also be used to determine if the tracks were caused by neutrons or if they are merely background tracks (which have a significantly different track-size distribution). Identifying and discarding the high-background foils reduces the number of foils that must be etched. This also lowers the detection limit of the dosimetry system. We have developed an image analyzer program that can more efficiently determine the track density and track-size distribution, as well as read the laser-cut identification numbers on each foil. This new image analyzer makes the routine application of track-size distributions on CR-39 foils feasible. 2 refs., 3 figs.

Book Personnel Neutron Dosimetry Using Hot Low frequency Electrochemical Etching

Download or read book Personnel Neutron Dosimetry Using Hot Low frequency Electrochemical Etching written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have developed an electrochemical-etch procedure for the processing of large numbers of CR-39 dosimeters. Specially designed Homann-Type chambers can etch up to 24 CR-39 chips, or foils, at one time. In our two-step procedure, the second step, called blow-up, increases the tracks' size and makes them relatively uniform. The energy response is fairly flat from approx. 150 keV to 4.5 MeV, but drops by about a factor of three in the 13 to 16 MeV range. The sensitivity of the dosimetry system is 6 tracks/mrem with a background of 8 mrem, giving a lower limit of sensitivity of approximately 10 mrem for the dosimeter (when three foils are used). Because greater numbers of CR-39 foils can be accommodated at any one time, our procedure is quite efficient for operations with large numbers of dosimeters to be processed. 12 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

Book Neutron Spectra Evaluation Obtained from the Track size Distribution on Electrochemically Etched CR 39 Foils

Download or read book Neutron Spectra Evaluation Obtained from the Track size Distribution on Electrochemically Etched CR 39 Foils written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are studying the relationship between neutron energy and track-size distribution on electrochemically etched CR-39 foils using a two-stage etching procedure. Although the electrochemical etching process alters the track size, we now find that the track diameter is related to the neutron energy even after the second stage (blowup) is completed. This relationship is complex, being effected by the etching parameters, including oven temperature, etching high voltage, and etching time. Current studies are directed at establishing the effect of each of these parameters on the track-size distribution and at determining an optimal etching procedure for neutron spectra evaluation. If neutron spectral information can be determined from the track-size distribution, dose can be calculated directly from the neutron fluence and spectrum.

Book Neutron Dosimetry Using Electrochemical Etching

Book excerpt: Registration of .cap alpha.-tracks and fast-neutron-induced recoils tracks by the electrochemical etching technique as applied to sensitive polymer foils (e.g., polycarbonate) provides a simple, sensitive and inexpensive means of fast neutron personnel dosimetry as well as a valuable research tool for microdosimetry. When tracks were amplified by our electrochemical technique and the etching results compared with conventional etching technique a striking difference was noted. The electrochemically etched tracks were of much larger diameter (approx. 100 .mu.m) and gave superior contrast. Two optical devices--the transparency projector and microfiche reader--were adapted to facilitate counting of the tracks appearing on our polycarbonate foils. The projector produced a magnification of 14X for a screen to projector distance of 5.0 meter and read's magnification was 50X. A Poisson distribution was determined for the number of tracks located in a particular area of the foil and experimentally verified by random counting of quarter sections of the microfiche reader screen. Finally, in an effort to determine dose equivalent (rem), a conversion factor is being determined by finding the sensitivity response (tracks/neutron) of recoil particle induced tracks as a function of monoenergetic fast neutrons and comparing results with those obtained by others.
