New infectious hazards are of particular importance at nonhuman-primate facilities. For example, the discovery that B virus can be transmitted via a splash on a mucous membrane raises new concerns that must be addressed, as does the discovery of the Reston strain of Ebola virus in import quarantine facilities in the U.S. The risk of such infectious hazards is best managed through a flexible and comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP) that can identify and mitigate potential hazards. Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and Use of Nonhuman Primates is intended as a reference for vivarium managers, veterinarians, researchers, safety professionals, and others who are involved in developing or implementing an OHSP that deals with nonhuman primates. The book lists the important features of an OHSP and provides the tools necessary for informed decision-making in developing an optimal program that meets all particular institutional needs.

The history of education and training within the corporate world and the roles of government and unions are traced. Factors that have limited college and industrial cooperation in employee education are also identified. Four types of employee educational programs are covered: (1) job and company-specific training offered in-house; (2) trade seminars and professional meetings; (3) tuition aid programs; and (4) credit courses and degree programs offered by businesses either independently or in cooperation with colleges. Philosophies of educating for work are discussed, as are competency studies conducted by three organizations. Benefits of collaboration for the two sectors are identified. For colleges, industry provides a source of students and an opportunity for faculty to better understand technological changes and skills needed by employees. For industry, colleges offer facilities, faculty expertise, research findings, and structures for awarding credit and degrees. Issues that colleges and industry should consider in deciding whether to work together in educating employees are outlined, as well as ways to identify each other's needs and assets. (SW)

Book excerpt: Over the past five years, business and education groups have issued a series of reports indicating that the skill demands of work are rising, due to rapid technological change and increasing global competition. Researchers have begun to study changing workplace skill demands. Some economists have found that technological change is "skill-biased," increasing demand for highly skilled workers and contributing to the growing gap in wages between college-educated workers and those with less education. However, other studies of workplace skill demands have reached different conclusions. These differences result partly from differences in disciplinary perspective, research methods, and datasets. The findings of all of these strands of research on changing skill demands are limited by available methods and data sources. Because case study research focuses on individual work sites or occupations, its results may not be representative of larger industry or national trends. At a more basic level, there is some disagreement in the literature about how to define "skill". In part because of such disagreements, researchers have used a variety of measures of skill, making it difficult to compare findings from different studies or to accumulate knowledge of skill trends over time. In the context of this increasing discussion, the National Research Council held a workshop to explore the available research evidence related to two important guiding questions: What are the strengths and weaknesses of different research methods and data sources for providing insights about current and future changes in skill demands? What support does the available evidence (given the strengths and weaknesses of the methods and data sources) provide for the proposition that the skills required for the 21st century workplace will be meaningfully different from earlier eras and will require corresponding changes in educational preparation?

Doeringer Many of our approaches to education and training date back to the nine teenth and early twentieth centuries. Since that time, the skills and abilities demanded by the economy have undergone far greater change than have our training arrangements. Moreover, our ambitions for what can be ac complished through education and training policy have also increased. Not only do we expect that such policies should meet the skill needs of the na tion, but also we ask that they playa role in equalizing economic oppor tunity and in promoting greater well-being among workers. In accordance with its mandate to increase understanding of educational processes and educational policy, the National Institute of Education (NIB) sponsored a two-day workshop in June of 1979 to examine work place perspectives on education and training policy. The workshop brought together a group of employer and trade union representatives, education and training specialists, policy analysts, and government officials to discuss research and policy questions raised by training activities at the workplace. As one might expect, the discussion ranged widely and reflected many viewpoints on the relationship between education and work. Among the participants there was consensus neither as to what should be done nor 2 PETER B. DOER INGER even as to what were the most important gaps in our knowledge about the workings of the education and training system. The discussion was helpful, however, in drawing attention to the workplace as a significant and too often neglected component of this system.
