CHAPTER VIII METHODS OF OBGANISATION AND ADMnsriSTEATION Local conditions rightly have an important influence on the form of organisation most desirable for each city or town, nevertheless all visiting nurse associations may gain something from the study of methods successfully employed in other places, and not infrequently these same methods in modified form may be transplanted to advantage. Because this is felt to be true, this chapter will contain a short account of methods of organisation and administration that seem to be working well in five different visiting nurse associations and in one nursing settlement. These particular organisations have been selected because each represents a type, and because in each some one form or aspect of the work has been peculiarly emphasised. The Henry Street Settlement in New York embodies the settlement idea and emphasises the close relationship between the care of the sick and all other community problems. The Boston Association was the first to combine the work of staff and post-graduate student nurses. In Cleveland the problem of affiliation of agencies has been worked out through a central committee, and in addition hourly nursing is undertaken by the association. Chicago represents well-organised work in a very large city, and shows the successful development of industrial nursing. Dayton is trying the experiment of a single nurse in a small district caring for all types of cases, and the Dayton Association is also interesting in that the work is supported by three different agencies. In Providence the ward method of administering districts is used, with different special services maintained under one management.
