(1) It shows Albert's beginning his own theological enterprise where all theology begins, or began, with the doctrine of the Trinity. (2) His approach at that time, and his training, was in the thought of St Thomas, which continued to ground him even as he moved more and more in the direction of doing theology contextually. (3) As Jesus became more and more the center of his theological thought, he had already begun his reflections on Jesus in his study of the Trinity. Albert became best known as a theologian with the publication in 1976 of his widely distributed and translated Jesus Before Christianity and thirty years later of Jesus Today. Through interaction with the thought of Jurgen Moltmann, Oliver O'Donovan and Thomas Aquinas, it argues that human law is called to play a positive but limited role in maintaining "shallow justice" and relative peace. Human law is overshadowed by the work of the Son, included in the purposes of the Father, and used as an instrument by the Holy Spirit. However, the Spirit works in those who are in Christ to effect "deep justice," a work of sanctification which culminates in glorification--the experience of perfect, free, willing obedience in heaven. Thinking about law in the light of the Trinity enables us to understand its role, its purposes, and its limits.

Few concepts are as replete with definitional difficulty. Equally important is the application of a proper definition to all major Christian doctrinal commonplaces. This work, recognizing the insufficiency of modern theology to offer a cogent concept of 'person', proposes a thorough historical and theological evaluation of Trinitarian personhood presented in three critical paradigm-shifts by which one can measure the development of the idea of true personhood presented. The three watershed eras of discernment of divine personhood presented are seen here as first, the Cappadocian position of the mutual indwelling (perichoresis) of the divine persons is contrasted with Augustine's view of the place of relations in defining divine persons. Second, the ideas of Richard of St. Victor whose caritas consummata and its relational implications met the nemesis of the Thomistic category of 'subsistent relations'. And last, as an example of this important discussion in modernity, the German, Heribert Mÿhlen's dynamic phenomenological approach to Triune personhood is offered as a means of countering the implicit modalisms of Barth and Rahner. If the personhood of God is in essence Being-in-Another then Christianity must apply that ontology to all sectors of reality to be fully Christian.

Whether through subversive performative identity or by surgical sex change, the divinely made human person is now threatened with abolition and replacement by the self-made man and the man-made woman. In Metaphysics and Gender, Michele M. Schumacher offers a corrective to this distorted and distorting outlook, calling for the recovery of an anthropological vision rooted in recognition of the normative divine “art” of nature and of the likeness—and far greater unlikeness—between divine and human causality. Surveying contemporary transgender trends, Schumacher identifies and excavates their conceptual and ideological foundations in the gender theory of Judith Butler, the existentialist feminism of Simone de Beauvoir, and the atheistic existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre. To the erroneous philosophical presuppositions of these thinkers Schumacher contrasts the metaphysically grounded thought of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, advancing their positive account of the good of creation and of the meaning of ethical norms, human freedom and natural inclinations, and embodiment, and mounting a timely and trenchant defense of the divinely created human person.
