Book Women Secondary Principals in Texas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite movement toward equity given the institutionalization of affirmative action programs and policies, researchers document continued underrepresentation of women principals in secondary schools. Gender equity in the high school principalship possesses the key to unlocking many problems including poor outcomes for high school students to low representation of women superintendents. Researchers call for examination of progress for women in educational administration to formulate more equity responsive practices and policies. Research was conducted to describe and analyze differences between women secondary principals in Texas 2011 and 1998 on measures of (a) personal and professional characteristics, (b) leadership styles and practices, and (c) school organization. Forty-two percent of the 117 surveys sent to a representative sample of women principals in 2011 were returned and then merged with data gathered from a comparable sample surveyed in 1998. Fifty-three percent of the respondents in 2011 identified as Anglo European, 20% were Latina, 18% were African American, and 5% chose Native American. Women secondary principals in 2011 were significantly more diverse in terms of ethnicity and age but no differences were noted in professional characteristics. Three-quarters of women in both years were found to possess a high task and high relationship leadership style; however a significant minority had shifted to a high task with low relationship style in 2011, which is indicative of a more directive leadership style. A significant and large reduction in leadership adaptability was observed. Women principals in 2011 reported high agreement and frequency of distributing various leadership functions, particularly for trust in team members, taking actions in the best interest of students, and support for the welfare of teachers. The schools led by the women principals in 2011 were found to possess higher percentages of students qualified as economically disadvantaged and were more urban. Finally, half of the schools in 2011 were rated Recognized by the Texas Education Agency, which was significantly higher than the 16% in 1998. The significance of study findings center on observed progress toward equity and women's leadership effectiveness. Recommendations for training, recruitment, and hiring practices and policies are forwarded in the conclusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Character Education in America's Blue Ribbon Schools is based upon descriptive, documentary, and qualitative research conducted on the award winning school applications in the United Stated Department of Education's Elementary School Recognition Program, i.e. the Blue Ribbon Schools. The purpose of the program is to focus national attention on schools that are doing an exceptional job with all of their students. Areas studied are developing a solid foundation of basic skills and knowledge of subject matter and fostering the development of character, values, and ethical judgement. The first edition of this book reported on the first decade of this program, from 1985 to 1994. The second edition adds the schools that have won the award from 1996-2001. Included are the Blue Ribbon schools that applied for Special Honors in Character Education and five that actually won that recognition in 1998-1999. This edition finds character education much stronger in American schools in recent years and is full of many promising practices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs is a resource to develop effective and high quality comprehensive school counseling programs that align with Texas statutes and rules governing the work of school counselors. It outlines a process for tailoring school counseling programs to meet the varying needs of students across an array of school districts through implementation of the four components of school counseling programs, Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support. With this resource, a school counselor will learn to use campus-specific data to identify the unique needs of a campus and design a comprehensive school counseling program to meet those needs. Recognizing the important roles of the entire educational community, the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs provides examples of how parents, teachers, administrators, principals and school counselors can best contribute to implementation of each of the four components of comprehensive school counseling programs. It provides a developmental framework for a school counseling program curriculum that includes activities at each grade level to enhance students¿ educational, career, personal and social development.

Book Exploring the Phenomenon of Public School Principals in Texas who Stay at a Title I School for Five Or More Years

Download or read book Exploring the Phenomenon of Public School Principals in Texas who Stay at a Title I School for Five Or More Years written by Chae Cavazos and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student achievement is positively correlated to effective principal leadership (Marzano et al., 2005). Data suggests school improvement efforts need three to five years to be fully implemented and for the impact to be realized (Beckett, 2018). The most recent principal turnover data in Texas indicates a turnover rate of 52.2% within a three-year period and 71.3% within a five-year period (Fuller, 2008). The turnover rate at Title I schools is higher than nonTitle I schools (Grissom & Bartanen, 2018). There is evidence and research around why principals leave (Baker et al., 2010; Battle & Gruber, 2010; Beckett, 2018), but little to no evidence surrounding those who stay five or more years. This qualitative study explores the reasons or factors principals of Title I public schools in Texas continued to lead their schools for five or more years. In this phenomenological study, ten principals of schools grades five or higher were interviewed to understand the phenomenon of longevity in a role with a high turn-over rate in Texas and nationally. Data from these interviews were coded and analyzed. The findings were reported with conclusions drawn about the reasons discovered. This study hopes to provide public school district leadership a clearer understanding of why some leaders of schools designated as Title I persist for five or more years.
