Book excerpt: Victimization is a problem that affects many populations, but college students may be predisposed to getting victimized or engaging in victimizing behaviors. College students are typically found in the age cohort that is deemed to have the highest chance to experience a sexual victimization situation as well as commit violent crimes. For various reasons, these individuals need to be aware of the dangers and possibilities that loom in their everyday lives. This research investigated correlates of personality and impulsivity with perceptions of sexual assault. The present study was able to establish a relationship between impulsivity and perceptions of sexual assault or victimization. In particular, males were less likely to perceive a situation as victimization than their female counterparts. Additionally, positive correlations were found between impulsivity traits and personality traits such as extroversion and openness.

Book excerpt: Rates of sexual assault remain high across university settings despite increased efforts to combat this phenomenon. This project fills a gap in the existing literature by examining how situation-specific variables (i.e. alcohol consumption by and degree of familiarity between individuals) and individual-level factors (i.e., attitudes regarding sexual instrumentality and permissiveness, rape myths, trait token resistance, history of sexual victimization and sexual perpetration) relate to ongoing third-party perceptions of a sexual scenario. The current study used a vignette methodology to portray the dynamic nature of a sexual interaction between a man and a woman that began innocently but escalated to problematic behavior by the man and finally to sexual assault. At eight points in the interaction, a sample of university students (n = 350) reported their perceptions of comfort, safety, consent, and reportability of scenario. They further indicated the extent to which the scenario represented instances of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and state-based female token resistance. As the vignette's sexual interaction became increasingly problematic, participants reported declining perceptions of comfort, safety, and state-based female token resistance, and they were more likely to characterize the interaction as lacking consent, being worthy of reporting, and involving sexual harassment and sexual assault. An analysis of situational variables within the vignette revealed no significant associations between vignette perceptions and alcohol consumption by or degree of familiarity between characters. For individual-level factors, lower rape myth acceptance was associated with identifying the interaction as lacking consent, being worthy of reporting, and as both sexual harassment and sexual assault. Trait token resistance was also related to perceptions of comfort, safety, and state-based female token resistance. These findings add to the growing literature on university sexual assault by demonstrating that third-party perceptions of sexually problematic vignettes manifest differentially among participants based on individual-level factors but not situational variables.

To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.

However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

This study extends the sexual harassment literature to include Koreans' experiences with this important topic. Therefore, this study addresses four research questions: RQ1: Are there cultural differences between Korean and American students' perceptions of sexual harassment in conversational appropriateness? RQ2: Are there gender differences between Korean and American students' perceptions of sexual harassment in conversational appropriateness? RQ3: Will American students report perceptions of sexually harassing conversations more frequently than Korean students? RQ4: Based on the interview data, will American students report more awareness and understanding of the definition of sexual harassment than Korean students? The results indicated few cultural differences, contrary to the literature, several gender differences, and several significant differences based on same national or ethnic differences.

Book excerpt: High rates of sexual victimization occur on colleges campus and continue to be a significant issue, despite efforts to prevent assault. Although risk factors of victimization have been identified and extensively studied, many college students are still victimized and do not seek help (Tjaden and Thoennes, 2000, 2006). College campuses have an abundance of resources; however, they are underutilized. Since preventative measures have not fully stopped these incidences from occurring, intervention and identification of these students is necessary. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the relation between personality traits, coping styles, and disclosure among sexually victimized college students. College students are of specific interest due to the high prevalence rates of sexual victimization that occur on college campuses (Koss, Gidycz and Wisniewski, 1985). There are an abundance of resources on college campuses that are free of cost to students; however, they are often underutilized in times of need (Sabina and Ho, 2014). The results of the present study revealed the link between personality, coping and disclosure. A total of 117 participants were used in data analysis. Participants ranged from 18-28 and all currently enrolled in college. All participants also endorsed one or more items on the Sexual Experiences Survey (Koss and others, 2006)... Participants also completed additional measures of personality (Big Five Inventory, John and Srivastava, 1990), coping (Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI), Tobin, 1984, 2001), and disclosure (CSA Study Reporting form, Krebs and others, 2007). A series of regressions were used to analyze the dataset.
