Book Consequences of Personality in Chimpanzees

Download or read book Consequences of Personality in Chimpanzees written by Nicole Gizelle Sharpe and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade the study of inter-individual differences has driven an increasing number of questions in behavioral ecology. In primates, personality has been studied for much longer – since the 1960s – and consequently we see the effects of personality on both individual and social behavior more widely. Additionally, improvements in quantitative methods allow us to assess personality and answer questions about behavior that we have as yet been unable to. In this study we aim to explore how personality influences individual health, relationships, and social structure in sanctuary-living chimpanzees. Sanctuary chimpanzees represent an increasing proportion of the world’s captive chimpanzee population, with 56 chimpanzees admitted to sanctuaries within African annually. In the first study we explore how personality, husbandry, and environmental factors influence gastrointestinal parasite infection. We found significant effect of night house density on overall protozoan parasite infection. The second study explores how relationship strength, in terms of grooming and play relationships, varies with personality and demographic factors. The frequency with which two individuals groomed one another was most strongly predicted by the reciprocity of their grooming relationship. Play relationships were significantly affected by the age of the dyad and the dyad overall extraverted score. The third chapter uses new analytical techniques, Data Cloud Geometry and data mechanics, to explore whether stable affiliative subgroups assort positively by personality. We found that individuals in stable subgroups assort negatively in respect to the “Bold” personality factor, and they show significant mixing of personality types.

Book Behavioural Diversity in Chimpanzees and Bonobos

Download or read book Behavioural Diversity in Chimpanzees and Bonobos written by Christophe Boesch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus), otherwise known as pygmy chimpanzees, are the only two species of the genus Pan. As they are our nearest relatives, there has been much research devoted to investigating the similarities and differences between them. This book offers an extensive review of the most recent observations to come from field studies on the diversity of Pan social behaviour, with contributions from many of the world's leading experts in this field. A wide range of social behaviours is discussed including tool use, hunting, reproductive strategies and conflict management as well as demographic variables and ecological constraints. In addition to interspecies behavioural diversity, this text describes exciting new research into variations between different populations of the same species. Researchers and students working in the fields of primatology, anthropology and zoology will find this a fascinating read.

Book Personality and Temperament in Nonhuman Primates

Download or read book Personality and Temperament in Nonhuman Primates written by Alexander Weiss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there has been an increased interest in research on personality, temperament, and behavioral syndromes (henceforth to be referred to as personality) in nonhuman primates and other animals. This follows, in part, from a general interest in the subject matter and the realization that individual differences, once consigned to ‘error’ terms in statistical analyses, are potentially important predictors, moderators, and mediators of a wide variety of outcomes ranging from the results of experiments to health to enrichment programs. Unfortunately, while there is a burgeoning interest in the subject matter, findings have been reported in a diverse number of journals and most of the methodological and statistical approaches were developed in research on human personality. The proposed volume seeks to gather submissions from a variety of specialists in research on individual differences in primate temperament, personality, or behavioral syndromes. We anticipate that chapters will cover several areas. The first part of this edited volume will focus on methodological considerations including the advantages and disadvantages of different means of assessing these constructs in primates and introduce some statistical approaches that have typically been the domain of human personality research. Another part of this edited volume will focus on present findings including the physiological and genetic bases of personality dimensions in primates; the relationship between personality and age; how personality may moderate or impact various outcomes including behavior, health, and well-being in captive and non-captive environments. For the third part of the volume we hope to obtain summaries of the existing work of the authors on the evolutionary important of personality dimensions and guideposts for future directions in this new and exciting area of research.

Book Sleep and Sleep related Behaviors in Chimpanzee Pan Troglodytes

Download or read book Sleep and Sleep related Behaviors in Chimpanzee Pan Troglodytes written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sleep behavior is mediated by psychological characteristics, environmental conditions, and various behavioral facilitators and inhibitors of sleep, such as levels of regular physical activity, sleeping site, and posture. Chimpanzee sleeping behavior has been examined only in a limited fashion, and the questions of sleep and bed-building in captive chimpanzees have not been addressed in nearly 30 years. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine sleep and sleep related behavior in captive chimpanzees and the environmental, physical, and social effects on the flexibility of sleep, thus resulting in a more complete picture of sleep in chimpanzees. I also tested various hypotheses for the evolution and development of bed-building in great apes through experimental manipulation of captive chimpanzees. Chimpanzees in this study slept 8.83 hours per night, closer to the averages reported for humans than to previously published averages for chimpanzees. Captive chimpanzee sleep behavior was also characterized with frequent awakenings. Direct social interactions were only occasionally observed. In addition, temperature, humidity, lighting schedules, natural light-dark cycles, and individual age all affected sleep patterns within and across individuals. Wild-born subjects built and used beds significantly more than captive-born subjects. Also, wild-born subjects used more complex techniques during construction and, thus, built higher quality beds. Among captive-born subjects, those that were mother-reared through early adolescence spent more time building and using beds. These differences were primarily driven by females, as both wild-born and captive-born females built and used beds significantly more than males. The results of this dissertation reveal that chimpanzee sleep behaviors are more complicated than were previously thought. Some of the social and environmental contexts under which sleep occurs have been examined, and the factors that affect sleep duration and distribution have been identified. The development and acquisition of one important aspect of sleep behavior, bed-building, has also been identified as a learned behavior that requires early experience and practice for acquisition.

Book Male female Interactions Among Captive Chimpanzees Pan Troglodytes and Bonobos Pan Paniscus

Download or read book Male female Interactions Among Captive Chimpanzees Pan Troglodytes and Bonobos Pan Paniscus written by Jessica Walz and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Among polygynous primate groups, females exhibit behavioral strategies, such as copulation initiation, to mediate male aggression. Frequency and timing of female initiation among various primate species differs, often, in association with social organization and female reproductive physiology. I compared patterns of male and female initiated interactions across the sexual swelling cycle among captive chimpanzees and bonobos. Little variation was observed between the two species regarding non-sexual interactions. Males of both species initiated more sexual interactions than females, following the predicted pattern, and female chimpanzees initiated sexual interactions more frequently than female bonobos. Male chimpanzees initiated a greater number of sexual interactions in the swollen phase, while bonobo males did not. This study corroborates evidence from wild populations and contributes to understanding reproductive behavior of these two species.

Book Chimpanzees in Context

Download or read book Chimpanzees in Context written by Lydia M. Hopper and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the chimpanzee, one of the human species' closest relatives, has led scientists to exciting discoveries about evolution, behavior, and cognition over the past half century. In this book, rising and veteran scholars take a fascinating comparative approach to the culture, behavior, and cognition of both wild and captive chimpanzees. By seeking new perspectives in how the chimpanzee compares to other species, the scientists featured offer a richer understanding of the ways in which chimpanzees' unique experiences shape their behavior. They also demonstrate how different methodologies provide different insights, how various cultural experiences influence our perspectives of chimpanzees, and how different ecologies in which chimpanzees live affect how they express themselves. After a foreword by Jane Goodall, the book features sections that examine chimpanzee life histories and developmental milestones, behavior, methods of study, animal communication, cooperation, communication, and tool use. The book ends with chapters that consider how we can apply contemporary knowledge of chimpanzees to enhance their care and conservation. Collectively, these chapters remind us of the importance of considering the social, ecological, and cognitive context of chimpanzee behavior, and how these contexts shape our comprehension of chimpanzees. Only by leveraging these powerful perspectives do we stand a chance at improving how we understand, care for, and protect this species.
