Download or read book Understanding the Cost of Welfare written by Howard Glennerster and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the global financial crash, there is possibly no more pressing question for social policy than what forms of welfare are affordable and how. Clear and accessible, Howard Glennerster's Understanding the Cost of Welfare is unique in offering an authoritative, levelheaded, and nontechnical survey of how economic priorities and pressures affect social policies and what the mechanics of funding services mean in real terms. An updated edition of Glennerster's Understanding the Finance of Welfare, featuring a strengthened comparative dimension in its investigation of these vital services, this book provides more relevant institutional detail than any other text on this topic. Understanding the Cost of Welfare is an important, substantial contribution at a time when neoliberal arguments for reducing the burden of welfare are more dominant than ever before.

Download or read book Public expenditure written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Health Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The October 2010 Spending Review has imposed tough settlements on both health and social care, and sets a highly challenging context for the delivery their services over the next four years. In both cases efficiency gains will need to be made on an unprecedented scale if care levels are to be maintained and the quality of services improved. The Committee does not agree with the Government's premise that the Spending Review settlement and the two year pay freeze will provide councils with the necessary resources to sustain current eligibility levels for social care. Councils will need to sustain further efficiency savings of up to 3.5% per annum to avoid reducing their levels of care. In this context, the Government is placing understandable emphasis on the 'extra' funding for social care, through the Personal Social Services grant and the £1bn through the NHS. However there is concern that the increases in the PSS grant will not be reflected in changes in actual spending on social care. It is also vital that the savings required by the health settlement are made by efficiency gains rather than making cuts, particularly considering the uncertain landscape of the NHS reorganisation following the White paper. Improving the interaction between health and social care will be critical if the necessary cost savings on both sides are to be realised. It is not enough for the government to exhort change in this area: there must be a formal policy infrastructure that recognises the importance of achieving a better overall interface between the two sectors

Book Costing Community Care

Download or read book Costing Community Care written by Ann Netten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1993. Valid and useful costings in social and health care depend not only on a knowledge of costing theory but also on overcoming the practical difficulties involved. The authors of this book draw on eighteen years of research at the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) to describe the theory and practise of costing, and its uses. Costing Community Care differs from other books which address the subject, by acknowledging and discussing the practical difficulties of costing, and by examining in detail the interface between theory and practice. Principles and methodologies are identified, and pragmatic approaches to achieving valid date in the face of practical difficulties are described. Examples from empirical research are used to illustrate particular issues and four case studies are included which reflect a variety of methodologies and policy issues.

Book Who Needs Migrant Workers

Download or read book Who Needs Migrant Workers written by Martin Ruhs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are migrant workers needed to 'do the jobs that locals will not do' or are they simply a more exploitable labour force? Do they have a better 'work ethic' or are they less able to complain? Is migrant labour the solution to 'skills shortages' or actually part of the problem? This book provides a comprehensive framework for analysing the demand for migrant workers in high-income countries. It demonstrates how a wide range of government policies, often unrelated to migration, contribute to creating a growing demand for migrant labour. This demand can persist even during economic downturns. The book includes quantitative and qualitative analyses of the changing role of migrants in the UK economy. The empirical chapters include in-depth examinations of the nature of staff shortages and the use of migrant workers in six sectors: health; social care; hospitality; food production; construction; and financial services. The book' s conceptual framework and empirical findings are of importance to academic and policy debates about labour immigration in all high-income countries. The final chapter presents a comparative analysis of research and policy approaches to assessing labour shortages in the UK and the US. It examines the potential lessons of the UK's Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) for current debates about labour shortages and immigration reform in the US. The book will be of significant interest to policy-makers, stakeholders, academics and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the system of social welfare governance and delivery in the United Kingdom faces continued, radical change, this important book argues that this change is so extensive that we should consider it a fundamental transformation or revolution. Assessing twenty years of changes across the whole of the United Kingdom, Derek Birrell and Ann Marie Gray show how a new public governance perspective has replaced the dominance of public management, reflecting the increasingly plural and fragmented nature of public policy implementation. Drawing on examples across a range of policy areas, this comprehensive book unravels the complex ways in which changes in social policy and governance interact in the delivery of social welfare, making it essential reading for welfare researchers, students, and policy makers.

Book Disabled People Work and Welfare

Download or read book Disabled People Work and Welfare written by Grover, Chris and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to challenge the idea that paid work should be seen as an essential means to independence and self-determination for the disabled. Writing in the wake of attempts in many countries to increase the employment rates of disabled people, the contributors show how such efforts have led to an overall erosion of financial support for the disabled and increasing stigmatization of those who are not able to work. Drawing on sociology and philosophy, and mounting a powerful case for the rights of the disabled, the book will be essential for activists, scholars, and policy makers.
