Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of the War 1861-65 I launch this little volume upon the great ocean of books, craving the indulgence of the kind reader for its shortcomings and imperfections, with the hope that it will not be viewed with a critic's eye, and that its imperfections may be charitably passed by. I have endeavored to relate my experiences in the great war of 1861 - 5 just as events occurred, as if I were detailing them to family or friends in private, or, as I have sometimes done in the past, at gatherings of veterans and friends during the past years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of a Maryland Soldier in the War Between the States, 1861-1865: For Private Circulation Only With the greatest regard for truthfulness, I can say that never for one moment did the question of slavery or the per petuation of that institution enter into the decision of my course. When the first blow was struck at Sumter, and men were forced to take sides in the approaching conflict, that which impelled to decision was the love of freedom, and the constitution of my country, as I understood it, as opposed to the vindictiveness of the northern politician and his hatred of our southern brethren, as evidenced in the disregard of public faith and the coercive measures which were being set on foot to bring them under the rod. As a member of the military force of the State, I promptly responded to the call to arms, to maintain the public peace, and to prevent the passage of northern troops through its territory, and when the efforts of our authorities became futile, and their functions were usurped by the federal gov ernment; when it became apparent, without question, that the hope of State action was impracticable, by reason of this military occupation, then, without hesitation, I chose to cast my fortune with the south and to bear a part in the great struggle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years of Personal Reminiscences of the War No merely historical events will be related in this book the history 01 the war has been often repeated, and it would take a far abler pen than mine to trace correctly the movements of a large army, as it was constantly moving over thousands of miles in different sections of country. I leave all that to the historian, whose writings I gladly peruse with interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Lee, His Campaigns in Virginia: 1861-1865; With Personal Reminiscences Nearly thirty years ago I ventured to publish Four Years with General Lee, in which my primary Object was to assist in establishing the fact of the great numerical Odds against which the army under General Lee had to contend in its encounters with the Federal armies opposed to it. General Lee had expressed a purpose to do this, and after his death, before its accomplishment, the duty seemed logically to devolve upon me. Book Personal Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Personal Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln written by William Jayne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln: An Address I do not purpose in my remarks today to proceed into any extended relation of the justly celebrated political debate between Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Douglas in 1858, or concerning Mr. Lincoln's administration of the Federal Government from 1861 to 1865, because both are known to every intelligent and well informed person in our whole country, and more especially, as the great debate and the transactions of the period of the civil war is an open book, with the contents of which you all are familiar. I purpose to relate facts bearing upon his early days and incidents of his life, which are personally known to me; incidents which may seem small in themselves, but yet serve to show and illustrate the habits, traits of disposition and character, the heart and head, the humor and melancholy, in a word, the peculiar and varied moods in all affairs, great or small, private or public, of this pure, kind, gentle, decided, and steadfast man. He was sensitive and conscientious at all times and in every relation of life, and never in youth or man hood did he knowingly do wrong to any one. More than forty years have passed since his tragic death; seventy years are past and gone since he bade farewell to New Salem and the friends of his early manhood and settled in Springfield to commence the practice of law with John T. Stuart, his colleague in the Illinois Legislature of 1836. Probably there is not a man or woman living today who was of adultage when Mr. Lincoln left Salem. Before many years have come and gone the last person who has taken Mr. Lincoln by the hand and looked into that kind, familiar face will have passed from earth. So it is well that those who knew him should gather up facts, great and small, honestly related without prejudice or partiality. Let us, in narrating events and the story of his life, cling close to truth and the man, then those who come after us will know the real man - the true Lincoln. Let me repeat, if the story of his life is truthfully and courageously told - nothing colored or suppressed; nothing false either written or suggested - the coming generation will see and feel the presence of the living man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Written During the Civil War, 1861-1865 The Second Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was organized in April, 1861, immediately after the firing on Fort Sumter. Colonel George H. Gordon, Lieutenant-Colonel George L. Andrews and Major Wilder Dwight were the active spirits in creating the organization and in securing the acceptance of the regiment by the Secretary of War prior to the first call for troops by President Lincoln, May 4, 1861. The regiment was mustered into the military service of the United States in the month of May, 1861, at Camp Andrew, West Roxbury. It remained at this camp for drill and instruction about two months, and left Boston for the seat of War in Virginia, July 8, 1861. These letters, written to members of my family, record my experiences as an officer of this regiment during its term of service, from May, 1861, to July, 1865. Book Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E Lee

Download or read book Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E Lee written by J. William Jones and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Robert E. Lee passed on without setting pen to paper on his memoirs, both North and South alike were deprived of a classic personal history of the War Between the States worthy to sit on the shelf next to Ulysses S.Grant's Personal Memoirs. The Reverend J. William Jones, Lee's chaplain, compiled this collection of reminiscences in its place as a memorial volume commemorating his death. Filled with correspondence with President Andrew Johnson, General Grant, and C.S.A. Generals Scott, Beauregard, and Longstreet, and personal anecdotes from Lee's wartime contemporaries such as Jubal Early, Jeb Magruder, Jefferson Davis, and Winfield Scott. What comes to light is a personal portrait of Lee as family man, gentleman, scholar, and soldier, as well as an eyewitness account of the war that threatened to tear the United States asunder, as witnessed by the South's greatest military leader. The Reverend J. William Jones, D.D., was the chaplain of the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of General Robert E. Lee and after the Civil War served as chaplain for Washington College in Virginia under Lee's presidency. It was my proud privilege to have known General Lee intimately. I saw him on that day in April, 1861, on which he came to offer his stainless sword to the land that gave him birth. I followed his standard from Harper's Ferry, in 1861, to Appomattox Court-house, in 1865, coming into somewhat frequent contact with him, rejoicing with him at his long series of brilliant victories, and weeping with him when "compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources. . . . " This first attempt at authorship is sent forth with a sincere desire that it may prove acceptable to the countless admirer of the great Confederate chieftain, that it may serve to give to all a higher appreciation of his noble character, and that it may prove a blessing to the young men of the country (more especially to those who "wore the gray"), by inducing them to study, in order that they may imitate, his shining virtues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War Being on the coast, the town was supposed to be in danger. Companies were formed and drilled. Batteries of sandbags, armed with cannon, lined that part of the town ex posed to invasion from the bay, and there was much coming and going. Ladies met to embroider banners, and the ceremonies of presentation seemed to me most glorious and exciting events. Companies of young sol diers came down from the interior, and to my childish mind it seemed as though our part of the country was to be the seat of war. This was in the spring of 1861. My old est sister, Floride, was to be married early in the autumn, and mother wanted to go North to see her father and get my sister's trous seau. It was a hurried and hazardous trip, and she returned with much difficulty, being almost the last let through the lines. We were indeed glad to have her return safely, bringing the precious outfit. I feel sure noone else could have accomplished it, but she was a woman of indomitable will and courage. My sister's marriage took place soon after, and as I was one of the bridesmaids, war and all its consequences were naught to me for a while. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil War Letters, 1861 to 1865 Letter I. Camp Randall, Madison, Wis., January 19, 1862. Dear Mother: - We arrived here twelve o'clock Friday night, went to a hotel and got something to eat and stopped there until morning, when we went to the Capitol and were mustered into the United States service, and drew our uniforms, and now we are full fledged volunteer soldiers of Uncle Sam, and most of the Boys think now that they could whip the whole Southern Army, if they only had a chance. I saw Guy Myers here; his regiment has gone to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; he was sick in the hospital and was left behind. Guy was a little surprised to see Sam and me. Sam and myself are both well, and feel as big as the rest of the boys in our new uniforms. I guess I will close this time, so will say Good Bye. Say, mother, as this is my first letter as a Soldier Boy put it away and keep it until I come home. Direct your letters to Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin, care of Captain McGowen. I do not know the letter of our Company yet; we will be in the 17th Regiment. Well Good Bye. Write soon. Affectionately, your boy, Letter II. Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., April 3, 1862. Dear Mother: - Our regiment left St. Louis March 26 on the steamer Imperial and went down the Mississippi to Cairo, Illinois, then up the Ohio to the Tennessee, and from there up the river to what they call here Pittsburg Landing. Cannot see much of a landing, only one log house. However we are back from the Landing about three miles and fixing our camp. There are four other regiments in our brigade, the 16th Wisconsin, 4th Kentucky and the 20th Missouri, besides ours. General McArthur commands the brigade and General Grant commands the whole army. Say, mother, it begins to look more like business than it did while, we were in camp up North and sometimes I wish I was up North now instead of here, but here I am and here I will stay, I suppose. Say, mother, I don't like old Captain McGowen at all; he is a cross old bear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
