Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Men and Things on Long Island, Vol. 2 Spencer, Wallace and others is the greatest the world has ever witnessed. The author of the Vestiges in concluding his work says Thus ends a book composed in solitude and almost without the cognizance of a single fellow being, as solely as possible for the purpose of improving the knowledge of mankind and through that medium their happiness. For reasons best to be appreciated by myself, my name is retained in its original obscurity and in all probability will never be generally known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Men and Things on Long Island, Vol. 1 Improvement after improvement followed in the Frank lin until perfection was nearly attained. No special credit is due to any one individual, unless it be to Count Rumford who made a cook stove with an oven, then for the first time was learned how to bake and cook and be protected from the di rect heat of the fire, which had formerly been done in front of the blazing fire of the hearth, or in a brick oven detached from the house. From these early methods of our ancestors, from the old corner fireplace to the modern steam heat, from the old tallow candle to electricity, from the wheat shock in the field to a bag of Hecker's prepared flour were long and tedious processes of evolution. Machinery has also solved its great problem from the sickle and sythe to the reaping machine and from the old ail, which resounded on the barn oor all winter long, in separating the seed from the sheaf, is now accomplished in hours by the threshing machine where months were formerly involved. The next stage of development was from the house to the factory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Carpenters, painters and masons received six shillings per day and found, farm hands, laborers, ten dollars pe month in winter and fifteen dollars in summer and board. A day's work was from sun to sun. Plain board at a farm house could be obtained at six shillings per week; women help in the house, six shillings per week. Book excerpt: Fire Island, or Great South Beach as it is also known, is a 32-mile long sliver of a barrier beach located just off the South Shore of Long Island. Always a wild, lonely and untamed wilderness, its shores, waterways and the lands surrounding it have given us innumerable stories -- some inspirational, some frightening, but all of them intriguing. The stories in this book portray people and events from the island's earliest days, when it served Native Americans as a rich hunting, fishing and whaling site until the present day and its use as a U.S. National Seashore and National Wilderness Area.

Book Hartford s Ann Plato and the Native Borders of Identity

Download or read book Hartford s Ann Plato and the Native Borders of Identity written by Ron Welburn and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upholds Ann Plato as a noteworthy nineteenth-century writer, while reexamining her life and writing from an American Indian perspective. Who was Ann Plato? Apart from circumstantial evidence, there’s little information about the author of Essays; Including Biographies and Miscellaneous Pieces, in Prose and Poetry, published in 1841. Plato lived in a milieu of colored Hartford, Connecticut, in the early nineteenth century. Although long believed to have been African American herself, she may also, Ron Welburn argues, have been American Indian, like the father in her poem “The Natives of America.” Combining literary criticism, ethnohistory, and social history, Welburn uses Plato as an example of how Indians in the Long Island Sound region adapted and prevailed despite the contemporary rhetoric of Indian disappearance. This study seeks to raise Plato’s profile as an author as well as to highlight the dynamics of Indian resistance and isolation that have contributed to her enigmatic status as a literary figure. Ron Welburn is Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the author of Roanoke and Wampum: Topics in Native American Heritage and Literatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patchwork of beach towns, villages and hamlets that make up Islip Town represents some of the most historic communities on the whole of Long Island. Local Secatogue Native Americans harrowingly saved the Dutch survivors of one of New York's first shipwrecks in 1657. New York City's infamous Tammany Hall leased an entire summer resort island in Islip Town for decades. In 1912, a young woman from Sayville sacrificed her own life for another on the RMS Titanic. Islip Town's founding father, William Nicoll, owned the largest parcel on Long Island's South Shore but was blocked from owning even a grain of sand on Fire Island. A penniless Dutch immigrant to Islip Town became the world's "Oyster King." Join author and historian Jack Whitehouse as he reveals buried stories from Islip Town's past.

Book A Technical and Business Revolution

Download or read book A Technical and Business Revolution written by Elizabeth Hitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1986, develops the story of American woollen manufacture reaching far back in time to establish the very traditional nature of the fabrication of woollen cloths. Although traditional techniques changed slowly, particularly in England, circumstances and conditions changed rapidly in the United States during the Napoleonic Wars. Americans had more surplus capital to invest; they had abundant natural resources; and many American merchants and manufacturers sought independence from European goods and services. This title will be of interest to students of economic and American history.
