Book excerpt: "One of the best-known Boston politicians of our times recalls the life of the controversial but beloved mayor, congressman, and governor James Michael Curley. Curley was the greatest Irish-American politician in Boston history before John F. Kennedy, who actually won Curley's seat in Congress. As the voice of working Boston, Curley was loved to the point of adoration, even as he was being hustled off to jail for what he called ""taking care of constituents."" Bulger, who was growing up in Boston just as Curley's career and life were winding down, explains how such a ""rascal"" could have been an inspiration to him and so many others."

Book The Color of Water

Download or read book The Color of Water written by James McBride and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Deacon King Kong and The Good Lord Bird, winner of the National Book Award for Fiction: The modern classic that Oprah.com calls one of the best memoirs of a generation and that launched James McBride's literary career. More than two years on The New York Times bestseller list. As a boy in Brooklyn's Red Hook projects, James McBride knew his mother was different. But when he asked her about it, she'd simply say 'I'm light-skinned.' Later he wondered if he was different too, and asked his mother if he was black or white. 'You're a human being! Educate yourself or you'll be a nobody!' she snapped back. And when James asked about God, she told him 'God is the color of water.' This is the remarkable story of an eccentric and determined woman: a rabbi's daughter, born in Poland and raised in the Deep South who fled to Harlem, married a black preacher, founded a Baptist church and put twelve children through college. A celebration of resilience, faith and forgiveness, The Color of Water is an eloquent exploration of what family really means.

Download or read book Personal Reminiscences of James Mapes Dodge Classic Reprint written by Charles Piez and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of James Mapes Dodge Several years before I joined the organization he had conceived the idea of storing and reloading anthracite coal by mechanical means. In the preparation of anthracite for the market, all sizes from the largest domestic size to the smallest steam size, are pro duced. The demand for these sizes varies very materially, the steam sizes being in fairly uniform demand the year through, the domestic demand being active in the fall and winter but very light the rest of the year. To equalize production and to take care of the wide market uctuations, a considerable portion of the anthracite output must be stored between the mine and the market. Storage of anthracite, when Mr. Dodge entered the field, consisted largely of dumping the cars on trestles and reloading with wheel-barrows. The cost averaged fully 40 cents for the round trip, without taking into account the loss through degradation, which in this method of handling averaged fully 20 cents more.
