Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War A valued friend, who ranks as one of the ablest of American critics, to whom I have submitted these Recol lections for the purpose Of deciding whether they should, or should not, be given book publication, has just written me as follows: I have read the entire manuscript with very much interest and pleasure. It contains a great deal that is new to me and, I venture to say, that will be new to nine hundred and ninety-nine out of a thousand of the generation who took no active part in the affairs of the country in war times. Valuable side-light is thrown by your disclosures on some of the hidden springs and inner workings Of the times, and it appears to me that it is worthy to be preserved on account of its intrinsic value. Oglesby and the Civil War In June, 1912, the grave of William Dickey, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, who was buried at Argenta, Ill., was suitably marked with a handsome bronze marker. One great duty which devolves upon our organization is the collecting and compiling of local history. While taking up the study of the history of Illinois at one of our meetings at the home of Miss Carrie Powers, Mrs. Jane M. Johns gave a reminiscence of Decatur and Macon County in the early days. She said: The usefulness and intensity of life in those years can never be realized by the younger generation. Like conditions can never again exist. Download or read book Personal Recollections and Observations of General Nelson a Miles Embracing a Brief View of the Civil War Or from New England to the Golden Gate Classic Reprint written by Nelson Appleton Miles and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Observations of General Nelson a Miles Embracing a Brief View of the Civil War, or From New England to the Golden Gate This Book is largely the result of a desire to comply with the wishes of friends who have expressed the opinion that such a work would find a goodly number of interested readers. It was no part of my purpose to write my memoirs or a history; but rather to retrace, with such readers as shall choose to accompany me, some portions of the journey of life that now lie in the past. It is impossible in a single volume to do justice to all my companions who were engaged in the great cause of the Civil War, or those who engaged in the war for civilization along our western frontier; yet it has been my endeavor to do injustice to none. I have by no means exhausted the important features that marked the original journey, but have aimed to point out briefly, as far as practicable, the more interesting and instructive events so that the time of the reader may be spent not only agreeably, but with some degree of profit. In presenting these thoughts and observations I have hoped to meet the favor of the intelligent, generous American, who I know to be most considerate, and I trust I may rely upon his liberal consideration, especially when it is remembered that I have been obliged to gather and prepare much of the material at spare hours during the time largely taken up with the cares or exacting official duties and responsibilities. In this I have had the earnest assistance of Mr. N. E. Dawson, and for his faithful and zealous labor I desire to express my appreciation. If this narrative shall inspire thought or promote a taste for further research and study along the diversified lines of development in our great and growing country, my efforts will not have been in vain. I have also endeavored to illustrate the difficulties and dangers to which my companions in arms were exposed, in order that, if possible, their services and achievements might be more fully appreciated by the beneficiaries who are now enjoying the fruits of their heroism and sacrifices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War: With the Leaders at Washington and in the Field in the Sixties It is proper to note the circumstance that the three years covered by Mr. Dana's Recollections as here recorded constitute the only term during which he held any public office, and the only break in more than half a century of continuous experience in the making of newspapers. His connection with the Gov ernment during those momentous years is an episode in the story of a life that throbbed from boyhood to age with intellectual energy, and was crowded with practical achievement. Book Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman

Download or read book Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman written by J. H. Kidd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman: With Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade in the Civil War In preparing this book it has not been the purpose of the author to write a complete historical sketch of the Michigan cavalry brigade. Such a history would require a volume as large for the record of each regi ment; and, even then, it would fall short of doing jus tice to the patriotic services of that superb organiza tion. The narrative contained in the following pages is a story of the personal recollections of one of the troopers who rode with Custer, and played a part small it is true, but still a part - in the tragedy of the civil war. As such it is modestly put forth, with the hope that it may prove to be an interesting story to those who read it The author also trusts that it may contribute something, albeit but a little, toward giving Custer's Michigan cavalrymen the place in the history of their country which they so richly earned on many fields. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Thomas D. Duncan: A Confederate Soldier Within the happy family circle, from which my children are now gone, these oft recounted recollections became a part of their education. I permitted them to turn the pages of my memory, as the leaves of a book, that they might learn the vanished glory of the old South - the loving loyalty and the sad travail of her people. And I trust that they learned also that our unfor tunate Civil War - now, thank God, nearly sixty years behind us - was a clash of honest principles. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilbert Moxley Sorrel started as a young soldier in the American civil war, eventually rising to the rank of general. His Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer describes the campaigns in a candid and personal manner and is a great resource for anyone interested in this time period. Moxley Sorrel served most of his time under the talented James Longstreet. He does not attempt to provide an overview or objective account, but it is for precisely this reason that Recollections is so valuable. Many books have been written that objectively discuss the war but no other author could write this particular point of view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Virginian: In the Mexican, Indian, and Civil Wars Fredericksburg, Virginia, is one of the historic towns of America. Founded long before the Revolution, upon the Rappahannock River, at the head of tide-water, it commanded for many years the trade of the opulent planters of all that fertile region lying along the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. The town was the centre of the commercial and social life of that rich region known as the Northern Neck of Virginia and the Piedmont country, where were born and bred the great Fathers of American liberty. In my boyhood there were many there who had walked and talked with John Marshall, George Washington, George Mason, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and the Lees. For more than a century prior to the Revolution, the sturdy people of that region were often engaged in active war with the great Indian nation once ruled by King Powhatan.
