This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Treatment of Cancer As the journalistic reviews of my sec ond little book have been so encouraging I venture to put forth another, a third acorn, in the hopes that it may excite further interest in this most important subject, and lead others to investigate the matter and to report their experience and cases along the lines indicated. I should also be glad of just criticisms on a sci entific basis. It is not a little remarkable that during the past year or so there has been such a Singular dearth of surgical articles on cancer, as a careful search of literature shows, and so many journal articles, editorial and other, looking toward the thoughts on cancer which I have endeavored to present. It is sin cerely to be hoped that this ratio will in crease more and more, and we shall soon see a radical diminution in the death rate of cancer, which is so longed for by all. Book The Undying

Download or read book The Undying written by Anne Boyer and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 PULITZER PRIZE IN GENERAL NONFICTION "The Undying is a startling, urgent intervention in our discourses about sickness and health, art and science, language and literature, and mortality and death. In dissecting what she terms 'the ideological regime of cancer,' Anne Boyer has produced a profound and unforgettable document on the experience of life itself." —Sally Rooney, author of Normal People "Anne Boyer’s radically unsentimental account of cancer and the 'carcinogenosphere' obliterates cliche. By demonstrating how her utterly specific experience is also irreducibly social, she opens up new spaces for thinking and feeling together. The Undying is an outraged, beautiful, and brilliant work of embodied critique." —Ben Lerner, author of The Topeka School A week after her forty-first birthday, the acclaimed poet Anne Boyer was diagnosed with highly aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. For a single mother living paycheck to paycheck who had always been the caregiver rather than the one needing care, the catastrophic illness was both a crisis and an initiation into new ideas about mortality and the gendered politics of illness. A twenty-first-century Illness as Metaphor, as well as a harrowing memoir of survival, The Undying explores the experience of illness as mediated by digital screens, weaving in ancient Roman dream diarists, cancer hoaxers and fetishists, cancer vloggers, corporate lies, John Donne, pro-pain ”dolorists,” the ecological costs of chemotherapy, and the many little murders of capitalism. It excoriates the pharmaceutical industry and the bland hypocrisies of ”pink ribbon culture” while also diving into the long literary line of women writing about their own illnesses and ongoing deaths: Audre Lorde, Kathy Acker, Susan Sontag, and others. A genre-bending memoir in the tradition of The Argonauts, The Undying will break your heart, make you angry enough to spit, and show you contemporary America as a thing both desperately ill and occasionally, perversely glorious. Includes black-and-white illustrations

Book The Natural History of Cancer

Download or read book The Natural History of Cancer written by William Roger Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Cancer: With Special Reference to Its Causation and Prevention The subject of cancer has hitherto been investigated far too exclusively by the pursuit of details in ultimate analysis and hardly at all by the synthetical and comparative methods, which have been so profitably employed in other branches of biological research. As that fine pathologist Billroth has remarked Everything is too hurried nowadays. -we suffer from an insatiable craving for new - or apparently new - facts, in the hope of obtaining a possible sensational success. N 0 time is allowed to reflect upon, or to reconsider, the onward course of scientific inquiry. Where are we What have we left behind What is ahead Is it worth while to go farther in this direction or in that? Has detailed work given us a profitable knowledge of, or an insight into, the whole subject? No one finds time to answer such questions. In order that the immense stores of miscellaneous items of knowledge accumulated during the last half-century by dispersive analysis, may be profitably utilized for cancer research, concentration is above all things necessary for only thus can a higher plane of progress be attained. Moreover, since the cure of cancer altogether transcends present experience, I have in this work specially endeavoured to elucidate the causation and prevention of the disease rather than its cure for which, in my opinion, reliable indications are lacking. To this end I have devised and applied a new method of cancer research - Which may be called synthetic - whereby I have shown that there are modes of life, various habits and so forth, which tend to prevent the incidence of cancer almost entirely in healthy stocks, and greatly to reduce its ravages, even among those hereditarily predisposed. Such are the objects to which the present work is dedicated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Cancer, and Its Treatment After carefully considering all the circumstances, I determined to defer making the remedies and their method of application public, until such time as I should be recognised as the originator of them; and I am glad to say that I think this time has already come, and that I. Can now publish my plan; for the approbation of many medical gentlemen, and the gratitude of a multitude of cured patients have now placed it on such a broad basis of facts (and I hold that facts are everything in medicine), that it cannot well be either plagiarized, or the credit due to me disputed. Book What We Know About Cancer

Download or read book What We Know About Cancer written by American Cancer Society and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What We Know About Cancer: A Handbook for the Medical Profession In February, 1917, by vote of the National Council of the American Society for the Control of Cancer, a committee was appointed to prepare the manuscript of a Handbook on Cancer for circulation among the members of the medical profession of the United States. This was done as a part of the campaign the Society inaugurated for the collection and dissemination of facts in regard to cancer, to the end that its mortality might be reduced by a wider knowledge of the disease. The first manuscript was submitted to the Council of the Society at a meeting in April, 1917. The manuscript was then sent to a number of different members of the Council for the critical review of special sections of the pamphlet. The criticisms and suggestions thus obtained were utilized in a subsequent revision of the manuscript, which was submitted to the Council at a meeting held on Oct.26, 1918, and with certain changes, accepted and ordered published with the endorsement of the Council and in the name of the Society. The Handbook is designed to provide in a brief and readily accessible form the important facts about cancer in general, and its manifestations in the different situations where it most commonly occurs. The critical and controversial review of published statistics as to the end-results of operative treatment could not be included without enlarging greatly the size and scope of the publication. It was decided, therefore, to present only in general terms the expectation of success attending the radical operative treatment of cancer in each of its different situations. It is believed that in these statements, as in other respects, a conservative view has been taken of the situation, and that the statements made can be thoroughly substantiated by the published experience of the foremost surgeons of the country. Robert B. Greenough, M. D., Chairman, Boston, Mass. James Ewing, M. D., New York, N.Y. Jonathan M. Wainwright, M. D., Scranton, Pa. Committee on Publication of Handbook on Cancer. Oct.24, 1918. Book These Precious Days

Download or read book These Precious Days written by Ann Patchett and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.
