The text first covers the institutional environment within which financial management takes place, which includes a brief introduction to areas of business law and taxation. Part II covers the determination of economic value, while Part III presents various long-term sources of funds available to a firm. The next part discusses the overall financing mix that a firm should employ in funding its operation. Part V covers short- and intermediate-term financing, and Part VI tackles financial analysis, planning, and control. The seventh part deals with working-capital management, while the eighth part talks about external expansion. The book will be of great use to financing managers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Missed Opportunities, Marc Raboy reveals the short-sightedness behind the traditional view of Canadian broadcasting policy as an instrument for promoting a national identity and culture. He argues that Canadian broadcasting policy has served as a political instrument for reinforcing a certain image of Canada against insurgent challenges, such as maintaining the image of Canada as a political entity distinct from the United States and acting against internal threats, most notably from Quebec. It has served as a vehicle for the development of private broadcasting industries and to further the general interests of the Canadian state. Most of the time, Raboy maintains, this policy has been the object of vigorous public dispute.

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment written by A. E. Safarian and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1985 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: Foreign direct investment and multinational enterprises play a major but controversial role in Canada. Why do we see multinational enterprises use the subsidiary to transfer their techniques and products rather than national enterprises selling their products to foreigners through markets? What impacts do multinational enterprises have on the economic growth, balance of payments, industrial performance, and national independence of the home country? Professor Safarian addresses these questions, and others, as he surveys the research of Canadian economists in this field. Although economists have recently produced more and better analysis of foreign direct investment, the author maintains that additional research is required. The complex macro- and micro-economic impacts require more precise theoretical and empirical study....Sarafin concludes that economists and other social scientists must close the gaps in understanding foreign direct investment.

Download or read book Essays in Honour of Michael Bliss written by Elsbeth A. Heaman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-03-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading public intellectual, Michael Bliss has written prolifically for academic and popular audiences and taught at the University of Toronto from 1968 to 2006. Among his publications are a comprehensive history of the discovery of insulin, and major biographies of Frederick Banting, William Osler, and Harvey Cushing. The essays in this volume, each written by former doctoral students of Bliss, with a foreword by John Fraser and Elizabeth McCallum, do honour to his influence, and, at the same time, reflect upon the writing of history in Canada at the end of the twentieth century. The opening essays discuss Bliss's career, his impact on the study of history, and his academic record. Bliss himself contributes an autobiographical essay that strengthens our understanding of the business of scholarship, teaching, and writing. In the second section, the contributors interrogate public mythmaking in the relationship between politics and business in eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century Canada. Further sections investigate the relationship between fatherhood, religion, and historiography, as well as topics in health and public policy. A final section on 'Medical Science and Practice' deals with subjects ranging from early endocrinology, lobotomy, the mechanical heart, and medical biography as a genre. Going beyond a collection of dedicatory essays, this volume explores the wider subject of writing social and medical history in Canada in the late twentieth century.

Download or read book The Taxation of Corporations and Shareholders written by Martin Norr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is principally the work of the late Martin Norr. He completed a draft of the entire monograph but had not yet revised it when he died in late 1972. At that time, the integration of corporate and shareholder taxation was just beginning to become of widespread interest in the United States. With the increasing interest thereafter, the International Tax Program began to revise his manuscript, making as few changes as possible in the original draft. We had the benefit of criticism and analysis from Professor Richard M. Bird of the University of Toronto, now Director of the Institute of Policy Analysis there. In addition, Mr. Mitsuo Sato of the Ministry of Finance in Japan gave freely of his time in carefully suggesting changes throughout the manuscript. The present version of Chapter 3 owes a great deal to his additions and suggestions. Thanks are also due to Professor Hugh J. Ault of Boston College Law School for the Appendix, containing his description of the German integration system that became effective in 1977, which was first published in Law & Policy in International Business. Mr. Norr's interest in the subject of corporate and shareholder taxation developed while he was writing the International Tax Program's World Tax Series volume Taxation in France, published in 1966. The integration of French taxes on corporations and shareholders took place just after that volume was finished, but had been under discussion in France for some time before then.
