Book excerpt: An analytical method was optimized to determine the concentration of white phosphorus (WP) in sediments contaminated by smoke munitions. The method uses isooctane as the extractant and a gas chromatograph as the determinative instrument. Both field-contaminated samples and spiked sediments were analyzed and results on the spiked samples indicate that the method has a better than 80% recovery rate for WP. The detection limit for the method is 0.88 microg/kg of soil. The WP recovery is sensitive to the water content of the sediments and to prolonged shaking. Fluidizing the wet sediments by adding water to saturated soil greatly increases WP recovery. Since field samples are contaminated with WP particles of various sizes, subsamples may not accurately represent the concentration of the sample as a whole ... Book excerpt: White phosphorus (WP) has been implicated in the deaths of thousands of waterfowl annually at Eagle River Flats (ERF), an estuarine salt marsh located on Fort Richardson near Anchorage, Alaska. The source of WP contamination at ERF was the firing of WP-containing munitions into the area by the U.S. military. WP is a well known toxicant and is lethal to a wide range of species. However, WP contamination at ERF is the first documented case of a U.S. Army munitions impact area contaminated with WP particles. This has led to the designation of ERF as a Superfund site by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Army must follow the guidelines of remediation set by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Numerous studies have been conducted to better characterize the nature and the extent of WP contamination, and treatability studies for remediation processes are currently being implemented. This comprehensive bibliography provides all publications related to WF contamination remediation project at Eagle River Flats through 2003.

Many birds now hatch in managed nesting cover or in artificial nesting structures, use man-made wetlands, and winter on crowded refuges while consuming a grain diet The water they use is often limited in supply and may contain residues from its many prior users. Unfortunately, intensified management often results in new problems, among which disease is important There are many similarities between the current form of management used for some waterfowl and that used in domestic animals. In both, the objective is to maintain a healthy, productive population. Dealing with health problems in waterfowl will benefit from combining the skills of veterinary medicine and wildlife ecology. Revisiting this book after 15 years allowed me to consider changes at the interface between the two disciplines. Veterinary medicine traditionally has been concerned with the individual and with treating sick animals, while the ecologist is concerned with populations and the manager has limited interest in treating sick birds. During this period there has been a marked increase in awareness among veterinarians that they have a responsibility in wildlife and conservation biology. Curricula of many veterinary colleges now include material on non-domestic animals and attempt to put disease in an ecological context. Also during this time, waterfowl managers have become more aware of disease as a factor in population biology and there are early attempts to put numbers to "disease" in models of continental waterfowl populations.
