Book Mounties Moose and Moonshine

Download or read book Mounties Moose and Moonshine written by Norman Ryukichi Okihiro and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines three different types of criminal behavior in two small Newfoundland fishing villages: economic subsistence behaviors, such as poaching and making moonshine; conventional crimes, such as assault, theft, and domestic violence; and exploitative behavior, such as fish plant operators preying on vulnerable outport residents. Also describes the mounting tensions between the state and the residents since commercial fishing ceased in 1992 due to a collapse of ground fish stocks. He argues that the state's increasing and insensitive regulations force powerless people out of the fishery and destroy what is left of the outport way of life in Atlantic Canada and British Columbia. This book was released on 1992 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central question posed in this book is whether or not Newfoundland is becoming more violent. Three different papers examine various dimensions of crime and violence in the province from an historical perspective, illustrating how public perceptions of crime are formed. The first paper, by William O'Grady, discusses how violence is defined and measured. Based on examination of how official statistics are compiled and used, he assesses their ability to accurately record the incidence of violence. The next paper, by Elliott Leyton, investigates the role played by the press and by various interest groups in the period since the mid-1970s, in shaping and sustaining the idea that Newfoundland is in the midst of a wave of crime and violence. Overton's paper is an historical case study which examines the complex relationships between violence, questions of popular protest, public order, and economic and political conditions in Newfoundland in the 1930s.

Current Literature on Aging This volume represents a pioneering effort in Canadian-U.S. social policy analysis in the field of gerontology. Beginning with a continental viewpoint on demography, the book proceeds to deal with seven specific topics by means of a nation-to-nation analysis. Topics include social policy, long-term care, the chronic mentally ill, rural aging, aging veterans, native elders, and cross-national and intergenerational families. The last three topics are seldom addressed in books on aging; they are a vital new contribution to gerontological knowledge in both the U.S. and Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the background of momentous economic changes over the last decade, Retrenchment and Regeneration in Rural Newfoundland examines the economic, political, and social circumstances that have led to the current crisis in rural Newfoundland. In this timely collection, ten social scientists explore how outporters are coping with uncertainty, the choices that they are now confronting, and the consequences of these choices in terms of their capacity to sustain livelihoods into the next generation and beyond. Offering both general overviews and specific case studies drawn from recent research, Retrenchment and Regeneration in Rural Newfoundland provides insight into the moral and political economy of Newfoundland, the background to the collapse of the fish stocks, and the effects of the crisis on outporter's occupational choices and migration decisions. Rich in detail and thought-provoking ideas, this collection is the first to examine the interconnected problems and opportunities in rural Newfoundland in light of global economic and social changes.
