Book The Effects of Career Commitment Distress and Persistence on Academic Success Among Undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Students

Download or read book The Effects of Career Commitment Distress and Persistence on Academic Success Among Undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Students written by Kimberly D. Kennel and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of students, specifically in higher education environments, to persist is a critical determinant of academic success. Student success is especially precarious within programs of nursing, where curricula include clinical, laboratory, and didactic content. Identifying and describing the barriers and facilitators to nursing student persistence provides a blueprint to appropriately use financial and human resources as well as determine the effect student demographic variables has on desiring, attending, or benefiting from persistence interventions. The outcome of this study can guide the deployment of institutional resources to provide persistence-based interventions that are evidence-based. Framed by Tinto’s Theory of Student Departure, this study assessed the effects of career commitment, distress, and persistence on academic success among undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students. Findings indicated a significant relationship between persistence, emotional concerns (a subscale of distress), and the outcome variable of academic success.

Book Academic Factors that Contribute to Pre licensure Nursing Student Persistence

Download or read book Academic Factors that Contribute to Pre licensure Nursing Student Persistence written by Cecilia Flores and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for registered nurses is expected to grow exponentially in the next decade. As nurses retire and more Americans access the healthcare system, more than 400,000 nurses will be needed nationally (Auerbach, Buerhaus, &Staiger, 2011). Based on projections, by 2020, approximately 25,000 nursing students will need to graduate to the meet the state's need for nurses; in 2013, slightly more than 11, 000 candidates took NCLEX after successfully completing their nursing program (Texas Board of Nursing, 2014). Currently 70% of students admitted to a nursing program in Texas do not persist and graduate (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board [THECB], 2006). To meet the increasing demand for nurses, identifying the essential academic supports that nursing students need to persist and graduate may increase the number of practicing nurses. A 14-item academic support tool was created to examine the association of academic support and pre-licensure nursing student persistence. Texas program deans and directors self-reported the academic support available to nursing students and their persistence rate in this descriptive correlational study. A persistence benchmark of 85% was set by the THECB (2006). Three types of support were evaluated: institutional support, pre-program support, and program support. Introductory courses that taught study skills and critical thinking skills, specialized lab that assisted with math skills, and the use of academic advisors prior to nursing school admission, as well as nursing faculty whose workload was student persistence in nursing school were associated with persistence. Conversely, when programs offered courses that taught test taking skills prior to nursing school and provided test prep sessions during nursing school, students were less likely to persist and graduate. Academic support contributed to nursing student persistence; interpretation of findings; implications for nursing education; and recommendations for future studies were reported.

Book Persistence Factors Described by Nursing Students of African Descent

Download or read book Persistence Factors Described by Nursing Students of African Descent written by Claudettte R. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High attrition rates among nursing students of African descent have resulted in a nursing workforce that lacks diversity. Research has largely focused on the obstacles facing students who dropped out of their nursing programs, including financial constraints, academic issues, and personal challenges. Few studies have considered the students who persisted. The purpose of this qualitative dissertation study was to examine the factors that contributed to the persistence of students of African descent enrolled in nursing programs in community colleges as described in the stories and reflections of recently graduated alumni. Data was obtained with the use of two research questions (1) What stories do recently graduated registered nurses tell about their nursing programs in community colleges, the nursing faculty, their peers and the curriculum? (2) What stories do recently graduated nurses of African descent tell about the factors contributing to their persistence in community college (non-cognitive and cultural factors)? Participants were 15 registered nurses of African descent who have successfully completed five different nursing programs at community colleges and have graduated within the past five years. Two semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted to examine success strategies utilized by nursing students of African descent at community colleges. Data analysis revealed three themes: 1) Early departure of new nurses 2). Stringent nursing program failure policies 3) A triad of success strategies. Each of these themes provide evidence to support the reasons, obstacles and tools to increase the number of nursing students of African descent graduating from community colleges every year. The major findings of this study include program policies that were not student friendly, the significance of peer support and the value of a study plan early in the curriculum. Two key recommendations resulting from this study are Community College nursing programs and curriculum need to be revised to take into consideration the current landscape of events in healthcare and adequate remediation courses following course failure with an earlier return to the program. Conclusions were formulated based on the revealed need for facilitators of retention programs to adopt suggested ways that would embed knowledge of these success strategies into their programs resulting in improved course completion rates.

Book What Nursing Students Believe Impacts Academic Success in the First Year of a Baccalaureate Nursing Program

Download or read book What Nursing Students Believe Impacts Academic Success in the First Year of a Baccalaureate Nursing Program written by Tahnee J. Andrew and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of nursing school exceed the preparation and abilities of many students despite rigorous admission requirements. Nursing faculty strive to find ways to keep attrition rates as low as possible while maintaining the high academic standards necessary for students to become successful and safe nurses. Unfortunately, attrition rates have remained high for decades. To help students achieve academic success, nursing faculty need to learn more about what students believe impacts their success. Using Jeffreys’ Nursing Universal Retention and Success (NURS) (2012) model as a comparative model, this study explored the beliefs of undergraduate nursing students related to factors that impact academic success in the first year of a nursing program. Findings indicated nursing students believe there are multiple factors impacting their academic success and they have the responsibility to address each of those factors to promote their own persistence and progress through their educational program. Participants recognized students’ responsibility related to study skills, time management, priorities, and attitudes. Participants also noted the need for support systems they can access to help them cope with stress and anxiety. Nurse educators can use the findings of this study to develop programs to assist students and provide the necessary supports to increase student retention.

Download or read book Nursing Student Retention written by Marianne R. Jeffreys and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current nursing shortage, student retention is a priority concern for nurse educators, health care institutions, and the patients they serve. This book presents an organizing framework for understanding student retention, identifying at-risk students, and developing both diagnostic-prescriptive strategies to facilitate success and innovations in teaching and educational research. The author's conceptual model for student retention, "Nursing Undergraduate Retention and Success," is interwoven throughout, along with essential information for developing, implementing, and evaluating retention strategies. An entire chapter is devoted to how to set up a Student Resource Center. Most chapters conclude with "Educator-in-Action" vignettes, which help illustrate practical application of strategies discussed. Nurse educators at all levels will find this an important resource.

Book Predictors of Persistence in Online Graduate Nursing Students

Download or read book Predictors of Persistence in Online Graduate Nursing Students written by Denise Cauble and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistence is an important measure of success for individual students and institutions of higher learning. The purpose of this study was to explore personal and academic factors that influence persistence in online graduate nursing students. A predictive correlational study design was used. Data were extracted from existing student records in two online graduate programs within a large, urban college of nursing. A sample size of 197 graduate nursing students was selected, 94 who persisted to graduation from their program within 36 months and 103 who did not. Age, gender, race/ethnicity, undergraduate GPA, undergraduate education (BSN or RN-BSN level) were examined as predictors of persistence in the two online graduate nursing programs. In this study, undergraduate GPA emerged as a predictor of persistence to graduation. It is evident that there are other significant factors that affect persistence that have yet to be determined. By identifying students' characteristics of persistence, strategies can be developed to enhance success in online graduate nursing programs.

Book Handbook of the Sociology of Education in the 21st Century

Download or read book Handbook of the Sociology of Education in the 21st Century written by Barbara Schneider and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook unifies access and opportunity, two key concepts of sociology of education, throughout its 25 chapters. It explores today’s populations rarely noticed, such as undocumented students, first generation college students, and LGBTQs; and emphasizing the intersectionality of gender, race, ethnicity and social class. Sociologists often center their work on the sources and consequences of inequality. This handbook, while reviewing many of these explanations, takes a different approach, concentrating instead on what needs to be accomplished to reduce inequality. A special section is devoted to new methodological work for studying social systems, including network analyses and school and teacher effects. Additionally, the book explores the changing landscape of higher education institutions, their respective populations, and how labor market opportunities are enhanced or impeded by differing postsecondary education pathways. Written by leading sociologists and rising stars in the field, each of the chapters is embedded in theory, but contemporary and futuristic in its implications. This Handbook serves as a blueprint for identifying new work for sociologists of education and other scholars and policymakers trying to understand many of the problems of inequality in education and what is needed to address them.
