Book Persian Miniature Painting

Download or read book Persian Miniature Painting written by Laurence Binyon and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No section of Persian art was so brilliantly and completely represented at Burlington House in 1931 as the section of Miniatures. It was the largest and finest collection ever displayed in Europe, and could claim to be fully representative. . . The Bodleian Library, the Libraries of Edinburgh University, the Royal Asiatic Society, and the India Office, lent precious manuscripts and single drawings; but the richest contribution came from that of a private owner, Mr. Chester Beatty. This material was largely new and unpublished; and its juxtaposition with the splendid loans from private collections in Europe and America, especially famous Paris collections like those of M. Vever, the late M. Claude Anet, and M. Cartier, afforded an unparalleled opportunity for comparative study such as was greatly needed." -- Introduction.

Book Rethinking Place in South Asian and Islamic Art 1500 Present

Download or read book Rethinking Place in South Asian and Islamic Art 1500 Present written by Deborah S. Hutton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place plays a fundamental role in the structuring of the discipline of Art History. And yet, place also limits the questions art historians can ask and impairs analysis of objects and locations in the interstices of established, ossified categories. The chapters in this interdisciplinary volume investigate place in all of its dynamism and complexity: several call into question traditional constructions regarding place in Art History, while others explore the fundamental role that place plays in lived experience. The particular nexus for this collection lies at the intersection and overlap of two major subfields in the history of art: South Asia and the Islamic world, both of which are seemingly geographically determined, yet at the same time uncategorizable as place with their ever-shifting and contested borders. The eleven chapters brought together here move from the early modern through to the contemporary, and span particular monuments and locations ranging from Asia and Europe to Africa and the Americas. The chapters take on the question of place as it operates in more obvious settings, such as architectural monuments and exhibitionary contexts, while also probing the way place operates when objects move or when the very place they exist in transforms dramatically. This volume engages place through the movement of objects, the evocation of senses, desires, and memories and the on-going project of articulating the parameters of place and location.

Book The Shaping of Persian Art

Download or read book The Shaping of Persian Art written by Yuka Kadoi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the impact of the Persian style is undeniably reflected in most aspects of the art and architecture of Islamic Central Asia, this Perso-Central Asian connection was chiefly formed and articulated by the Euro-American movement of collecting and interpreting the art and material culture of the Persian Islamic world in modern times. This had an enormous impact on the formation of scholarship and connoisseurship in Persian art, for instance, with an attempt to define the characteristics of how the Islamic art of Iran and Central Asia should be viewed and displayed at museums, and how these subjects should be researched in academia. This important historical fact, which has attracted scholarly interest only in recent years, should be treated as a serious subject of research, accepting that the abstract image of Persian art was not a pure creation of Persian civilization, but that it can be the manifestation of particular historical times and charismatic individuals. Attention should therefore be given to various factors that resulted in the shaping of “Persian” imagery across the globe, not only in terms of national ideologies, but also within the context of several protagonists, such as scholars, collectors and dealers, as well as of the objects themselves. This volume brings together Islamic Iranian and Central Asian art experts from diverse disciplinary and professional backgrounds, and intends to offer a novel insight into what is collectively known as Persian art.

Download or read book Peerless Images written by Vice-President Eleanor G Sims and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first survey of the figural arts of the Iranian world from prehistoric times to the early twentieth century ever to consider themes, rather than styles. Analyzing primarily painting - in manuscripts and albums, on walls and on lacquered, painted pen boxes and caskets - but also the related arts of sculpture, ceramics, and metalwork, the author finds that the underlying themes depicted on them through the ages are remarkably consistent. Eleanor Sims demonstrates that all these arts display similar concerns: kingship and legitimacy; the righteous exercise of princely power and the defense of national territory; and the performance of rituals and the religious duties called for by the paramount cult of the day. She describes a variety of superb works of art inside and outside these categories, noting not only how they illustrate archetypal themes but also what it is about them that is unique. She also discusses the ways that Iranian art both influenced and was influenced by invaders and neighboring lands. Boris I. Marshak discusses pre-Islamic and also Central Asian art, in particular the earliest Iranian wall paintings and their pictorial parallels in rock carvings and metalwork, and the richly painted temples and houses of Panjikent. Ernst J. Grube considers religious imagery, and provides an informative bibliography.

Download or read book Mani s Pictures written by Zsuzsanna Gulácsi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founder of Manichaeism, Mani (216-274/277 CE), not only wrote down his teachings to prevent their adulteration, but also created a set of paintings—the Book of Pictures—to be used in the context of oral instruction. That pictorial handscroll and its later editions became canonical art for Mani's followers for a millennium afterwards. This richly illustrated study systematically explores the artistic culture of religious instruction of the Manichaeans based on textual and artistic evidence. It discusses the doctrinal themes (soteriology, prophetology, theology, and cosmology) depicted in Mani’s canonical pictures. Moreover, it identifies 10th-century fragments of canonical picture books, as well as select didactic images adapted to other, non-canonical art objects (murals, hanging scrolls, mortuary banners, and illuminated liturgical manuscripts) in Uygur Central Asia and Tang-Ming China.
