Book excerpt: The War of Northern Aggression, The War Between the States, or The Civil War---no matter what one chooses to call it, the war between the North and the South was brutal. No one was left unaffected by this event. Both young and old men quickly enlisted for the side they believed in. This would often pit brother against brother and father against son. The men of Perry County, Mississippi also heeded the call to arms. Six companies of Confederate troops would form in Perry County along with men from the neighboring Greene and Jones Counties. In this book are the names of the men who served on both sides---the Blue and the Grey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perry County At Gettysburg By: Terry F. Bender Perry County At Gettysburg provides biographical sketches of 108 Perry County soldiers who were present at the battle of Gettysburg in the Union Army. It gives brief descriptions of the units in which they fought and the locations of those units on the Gettysburg battlefield. It briefly describes the lives of these men before the war and afterwards for those who survived Gettysburg. This book attempts to highlight the different walks of life from which these men came as well as relate the interweaving of their lives before and after the war. It is a unique look at the man rather than the battle and focuses on life in rural America during the mid-nineteenth century. Hopefully these men have been brought to life in these words.

Book Civil Wars Civil Beings and Civil Rights in Alabama s Black Belt

Download or read book Civil Wars Civil Beings and Civil Rights in Alabama s Black Belt written by Bertis D. English and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the 1863 elections in Perry County changed the course of Alabama's role in the Civil War In his fascinating, in-depth study, Bertis D. English analyzes why Perry county, situated in the heart of a violence-prone subregion, enjoyed more peaceful race relations and less bloodshed than several neighboring counties. Choosing an atypical locality as central to his study, English raises questions about factors affecting ethnic disturbances in the Black Belt and elsewhere in Alabama. He also uses Perry County, which he deems an anomalous county, to caution against the tendency of some scholars to make sweeping generalizations about entire regions and subregions. English contends Perry County was a relatively tranquil place with a set of extremely influential African American businessmen, clergy, politicians, and other leaders during Reconstruction. Together with egalitarian or opportunistic white citizens, they headed a successful campaign for black agency and biracial cooperation that few counties in Alabama matched. English also illustrates how a significant number of educational institutions, a high density of African American residents, and an unusually organized and informed African American population were essential factors in forming Perry's character. He likewise traces the development of religion in Perry, the nineteenth-century Baptist capital of Alabama, and the emergence of civil rights in Perry, an underemphasized center of activism during the twentieth century. This well-researched and comprehensive volume illuminates Perry County's history from the various perspectives of its black, interracial, and white inhabitants, amplifying their own voices in a novel way. The narrative includes rich personal details about ordinary and affluent people, both free and unfree, creating a distinctive resource that will be useful to scholars as well as a reference that will serve the needs of students and general readers.

Book excerpt: Perry County has been a major player in the history of Alabama. Native Americans lived and hunted on its land, and it became a county before Alabama gained statehood. Early citizens chose to name it for Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812. The people of Perry County have played major roles over the years, which include the following: one married Sam Houston; one served as Alabama's first governor during the Civil War; one designed the Confederate flag and uniform; one married Martin Luther King; one was slain by a state trooper, triggering the Selma-to-Montgomery march; and another was the wife of Andrew Young. Along with its history, Perry County is an educational center and the location of many homes that predate the Civil War. Images of America: Perry County features samples of its rich history in photographs.

Book Civil War Courts Martial of North Carolina Troops

Download or read book Civil War Courts Martial of North Carolina Troops written by Aldo S. Perry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-08 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, Confederate military courts sentenced to death more soldiers from North Carolina than from any other state. This study offers the first exploration of the service records of 450 of these wayward Confederates, most often deserters. Arranged by army, corps, division and brigade, it chronicles their military trials and frequent executions and offers explanations of how the lucky and the clever were able to avoid their fate. Focus on court activity by company allows for comparisons that emphasize the wide disparity in discipline within a regiment and brigade. By stressing the effectiveness of these deadly decisions as deterrents to others, this work maintains that an earlier and wider reliance on execution would have strengthened the Confederacy sufficiently to force a negotiated end to the war, thus saving many Confederate and Federal lives.
