Book Conflict Contradiction and Contrarian Elements in Moral Development and Education

Download or read book Conflict Contradiction and Contrarian Elements in Moral Development and Education written by Larry Nucci and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005-01-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of this book is that individuals and societies have an inexorable urge to morally develop by challenging the assumptions of the previous generation in terms of what is right and wrong. The focus is on the nature and functional value of conflicts and challenges to the dominant moral and social values framework. Through this analysis, individuals develop moral character through conflict with their local authority figures, including parents. The moral structure of societies evolves through intergenerational challenges to and contradictions with the dominant social order. The book is divided into three parts to help frame this discussion: *Part I directly takes up the issue of resistance as it occurs at a cultural level, and the implications of such resistance for moral education and socialization. *Part II explores the normative forms of adolescent resistance and contrarian behavior that vex parents and teachers alike. *Part III brings back the issue of societal structure and culture to illustrate how negative features of society--such as racial discrimination and economic disparity--can feed into the construction of negative moral identity in youth posing challenges to moral education. Taken together, this collection presents a rich counterpoint to the pictures of moral growth as the progressive sophistication of moral reasoning or the gradual accretion of moral virtues and cultural values. It will benefit those in developmental, social, and cognitive psychology, as well as sociology, political science, and education.

Book The Psychology and Education of Gifted Children Psychology Revivals

Download or read book The Psychology and Education of Gifted Children Psychology Revivals written by Philip E. Vernon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this book looks at the problem of educating highly intelligent and gifted children, which it felt was of paramount importance to modern society. In the 1970s education increasingly focused on average pupils, and often made excellent provision for handicapped children, the authors felt it all the more important for teachers, parents and educationalists generally to be made aware of the special needs of the bright and talented, and how they could best be catered for. In this book Professor Vernon and his two co-authors discuss the provision of special facilities for the education of these children at the time, particularly with reference to the UK and Canada. The serious losses to society when the gifted and specially talented are ignored or repressed are pointed out and the merits and difficulties of alternative schemes are underlined. Detailed consideration is given to the psychological origins and nature of intelligence (both genetic and environmental) and of creativity and special talents (artistic and scientific), and also to available tests and other techniques for identifying exceptionally able children. The book was particularly intended to help teachers and educational administrators of the time, together with the parents of very bright children.

Book The Spoils of Freedom

Download or read book The Spoils of Freedom written by Renata Salecl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-31 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of nationalist, racist and anti-feminist ideologies is one of the most frightening repercussions of the collapse of socialism. Using psychoanalytic theories of fantasy to investigate why such extremist ideologies have taken hold, Renata Salecl argues that the major social and political changes in post-communist Eastern Europe require a radical re-evaluation of notions of liberal theories of democracy. In doing so she offers a new approach to human rights and feminism grounded in her own active partipation in the struggles, first against communism and now against nationalism and anti-feminism.
