Book Crustal Permeability

Download or read book Crustal Permeability written by Tom Gleeson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permeability is the primary control on fluid flow in the Earth’s crust and is key to a surprisingly wide range of geological processes, because it controls the advection of heat and solutes and the generation of anomalous pore pressures. The practical importance of permeability – and the potential for large, dynamic changes in permeability – is highlighted by ongoing issues associated with hydraulic fracturing for hydrocarbon production (“fracking”), enhanced geothermal systems, and geologic carbon sequestration. Although there are thousands of research papers on crustal permeability, this is the first book-length treatment. This book bridges the historical dichotomy between the hydrogeologic perspective of permeability as a static material property and the perspective of other Earth scientists who have long recognized permeability as a dynamic parameter that changes in response to tectonism, fluid production, and geochemical reactions.

Book Concrete Permeability and Durability Performance

Download or read book Concrete Permeability and Durability Performance written by Roberto J. Torrent and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-22 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durability and service life design of concrete constructions have considerable socio-economic and environmental consequences, in which the permeability of concrete to aggressive intruders plays a vital role. Concrete Permeability and Durability Performance provides deep insight into the permeability of concrete, moving from theory to practice, and presents over 20 real cases, such as Tokyo’s Museum of Western Art, Port of Miami Tunnel and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao sea-link, including field tests in the Antarctic and Atacama Desert. It stresses the importance of site testing for a realistic durability assessment and details the "Torrent Method" for non-destructive measurement of air-permeability. It also delivers answers for some vexing questions: Should the coefficient of permeability be expressed in m2 or m/s? How to get a "mean" pore radius of concrete from gas-permeability tests? Why should permeability preferably be measured on site? How can service life of reinforced concrete structures be predicted by site testing of gas-permeability and cover thickness? Practitioners will find stimulating examples on how to predict the coming service life of new structures and the remaining life of existing structures, based on site testing of air-permeability and cover thickness. Researchers will value theoretical principles, testing methods, as well as how test results reflect the influence of concrete mix composition and processing.

Book Concepts and Models for Drug Permeability Studies

Download or read book Concepts and Models for Drug Permeability Studies written by Bruno Sarmento and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to be an updated compilation of the most important buccal, gastric, intestinal, pulmonary, nasal, vaginal, ocular, skin and blood-brain barrier in vitro models for predicting the permeability of drugs. Concepts and Models for Drug Permeability Studies focuses on different approaches and comprises of various models. Each model describes the protocol of seeding and conservation, the application for specific drugs, and takes into account the maintenance of physiologic characteristics and functionality of epithelium, from the simplest immortalized cell-based monoculture to the most complex engineered-tissue models. Chapters also discuss the equivalence between in vitro cell and tissue models and in vivo conditions, highlighting how each model may provisionally resemble a different drug absorption route. Updated information regarding the most recent in vitro models to study the permeability of drugs Short and concise chapters covering all the biological barriers with interest in drug permeability A combination of bibliographic information related with individual models and footnote instructions of technical procedures for construction of cell and tissue-based models Simple and clear scientific content, adaptable for young scientists and experimented researchers

Book Penetration and Permeability of Concrete

Download or read book Penetration and Permeability of Concrete written by H.E. Reinhardt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-10-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an investigation into the barrier qualities of concrete. The transport of fluids, in particular organic and contaminating liquids, through concrete can lead to water and soil pollution. This is a world-wide problem on which there is little published material. This state-of-the-art report redresses the balance and sets out current knowledge on all aspects of the problem, testing methods and indicates the need for further research.

Book New Materials Permeable to Water Vapor

Download or read book New Materials Permeable to Water Vapor written by Harro Träubel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural products like wool, leather or cotton are permeable to water vapor. Their complex fibrous structure makes it difficult to imitate this natural phenomenon by synthesis. This book discusses ways to obtain water vapor permeability by microporosity or through a hydrophilic structure. Various areas of application include the medical sector for implants and dialysis, the industrial sector for filtration or for processes requiring the slow release of substances, and the consumer sector for leather substitutes or performance textiles.
