Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable reference work synthesizes and elucidates traditional themes and issues in Islamic philosophy as well as prominent topics emerging from the last twenty years of scholarship. Written for a wide readership of students and scholars, The Routledge Companion to Islamic Philosophy is unique in including coverage of both perennial philosophical issues in an Islamic context and also distinct concerns that emerge from Islamic religious thought. This work constitutes a substantial affirmation that Islamic philosophy is an integral part of the Western philosophical tradition. Featuring 33 chapters, divided into seven thematic sections, this volume explores the major areas of philosophy: Logic, Metaphysics, Philosophy in the Sciences, Philosophy of Mind/Epistemology, and Ethics/Politics as well as philosophical issues salient in Islamic revelation, theology, prophecy, and mysticism. Other features include: •A focus on both the classical and post-classical periods •A contributing body that includes both widely respected scholars from around the world and a handful of the very best younger scholars •"Reference" and "Further Reading" sections for each chapter and a comprehensive index for the whole volume The result is a work that captures Islamic philosophy as philosophy. In this way it serves students and scholars of philosophy and religious studies and at the same time provides valuable essays relevant to the study of Islamic thought and theology.

Book Practical Mysticism in Islam and Christianity

Download or read book Practical Mysticism in Islam and Christianity written by Saeed Zarrabi-Zadeh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Mysticism in Islam and Christianity offers a comparative study of the works of the Sufi-poet Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207-1273) and the practical teachings of the German Dominican, Meister Eckhart (c1260-1327/8). Rumi has remained an influential figure in Islamic mystical discourse since the thirteenth century, while also extending his impact to the Western spiritual arena. However, his ideas have frequently been interpreted within the framework of other mystical, philosophical, or religious systems. Through its novel approach, this book aims to reformulate Rumi’s practical mysticism by employing four methodological principles: a) mysticism is a coherent structure with mutual interconnection between its parts; b) the imposition of alien structures to interpret any particular mysticism damages its inward coherency; c) practical mysticism consists of two main parts, namely practices and stages; and d) the proper use of comparative methodology enables a deeper understanding of each juxtaposed system. Eckhart’s speculative mysticism, which differs from and enjoys similarities with the love-based mysticism of Rumi, provides a "mirror" that highlights the special features of Rumi’s practical mysticism. Such comparison also allows a deeper comprehension of Eckhart’s practical thought. Offering a critical examination of practical mysticism, this book is a valuable resource for students and scholars of Islamic studies, comparative mysticism, and the intellectual history of Islam.

Book The Bloomsbury Reader on Islam in the West

Download or read book The Bloomsbury Reader on Islam in the West written by Edward E. Curtis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a millennium, Islam has been a vital part of Western civilization. Today, however, it is sometimes assumed that Islam is a foreign element inside the West, and even that Islam and the West are doomed to be in perpetual conflict. The need for accurate, reliable scholarship on this topic has never been more urgent. The Bloomsbury Reader on Islam in the West brings together some of the most important, up-to-date scholarly writings published on this subject. The Reader explores not only the presence of Muslim religious practitioners in Europe and the Americas but also the impact of Islamic ideas and Muslims on Western politics, societies, and cultures. It is ideal for use in the university classroom, with an extensive introduction by Edward E. Curtis IV and a timeline of key events in the history of Islam in the West. A brief introduction to the author and the topic is provided at the start of each excerpt. Part 1, on the history of Islam in the West, probes the role of Muslims and the significance of Islam in medieval, early modern, and modern settings such as Islamic Spain, colonial-era Latin America, sixteenth-century France, nineteenth-century Crimea, interwar Albania, the post-World War II United States, and late twentieth-century Germany. Part 2 focuses on the contemporary West, examining debates over Muslim citizenship, the war on terrorism, anti-Muslim prejudice, and Islam and gender, while also providing readers with a concrete sense of how Muslims practise and live out Islamic ideals in their private and public lives.

Book The Psychology of Thinking

Download or read book The Psychology of Thinking written by John Paul Minda and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2015-09-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we define thinking? Is it simply memory, perception and motor activity or perhaps something more complex such as reasoning and decision making? This book argues that thinking is an intricate mix of all these things and a very specific coordination of cognitive resources. Divided into three key sections, there are chapters on the organization of human thought, general reasoning and thinking and behavioural outcomes of thinking. These three overarching themes provide a broad theoretical framework with which to explore wider issues in cognition and cognitive psychology and there are chapters on motivation and language plus a strong focus on problem solving, reasoning and decision making – all of which are central to a solid understanding of this field. The book also explores the cognitive processes behind perception and memory, how we might differentiate expertise from skilled, competent performance and the interaction between language, culture and thought.

  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Millennium Islam written by Latif Abdul-Malik and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everywhere we turn we see miracles. Humans, animals, water -- everything is a miracle. Muslims know the Miracle of Allah to be the Holy Qur'an, a book, but no ordinary book. True, it may be on paper and written in ink like millions of other books, but this book is the Final Revelation of Allah. Within it is contained the guidance to being a better person, a Muslim, the person who worships Allah, the Creator of the Worlds. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her for being one of the beloved wives of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said of him after his death: "He was the Qur'an in action". The first word revealed to Muhammad (pbuh) by the Archangel Jibril (Gabriel) was 'Iqra' which means 'Read!' The future is not about wars, it is about information, and the best information is knowledge. Muslim scholars through the ages have written volumes on every aspect of life using this word, 'Read!' as the basis for their inspiration. Islam is a force which cannot be hijacked -- its Message is universal and the more people that know The Truth, the more can embrace it. Thus, a book recommending the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) is to be the foundation on which to spread Islam in the Millennium. This book is addressed to all of Mankind, but its true value lies in the Message to those who are the Best of Mankind, the Ummah of Muslims. It is intended to provide hope and guidance to Muslims, those who submit to Allah, but it also acts as a warning. It is a warning to those who fear Islam becoming the dominant force. Have no fear -- Islam will become the dominant force of the future. This book is also for non-Muslims who are disillusioned with the greed, corruption, moral decay, poverty, evil and hatred that surrounds them. You know that there is a better world out there, where life is better, where people are nice and decent to each other, where the right laws are enforced in the right way, where the rich give to the poor, where man regards his fellow man like his own brother. This book will hopefully show you that better world. The best weapons of any battle are not the latest in technology -- it is always knowledge. The ideas, notions and values that are contained here are those that nobody can ever criticise as a whole -- the concept is too strong and the earliest intention is the Truth, and nothing but the Truth, in the history of humanity, the only book to neither be changed nor contain any error is the Holy Qur'an. The simpleton and the intellectual will both be convinced if Allah wills. However, like any other book, it is not what we have read, but what we have learned. The moment we learn, the world will change. This book is dedicated to Allah, the Provider of Guidance, the Professor of Majesty and Beauty, and His Messenger, the Best Example of Mankind, and to all Muslims, the Best of Mankind (HQ, 3.110).
